iceman168 Posted May 29, 2019 #1 Share Posted May 29, 2019 Hi, I can't find any postings on this topic. Has anyone been been on a cruise during wildfire season in July/August? Did the smoke impede visibility at the glaciers and ports in Alaska?
CruiserBruce Posted May 29, 2019 #2 Share Posted May 29, 2019 The fire season in Alaska has been under way for a month or more now. It usually winds down in early August. Whether or not the smoke affects cruising visibility will vary by prevailing winds. Those are not predictable.
Northern Aurora Posted May 30, 2019 #3 Share Posted May 30, 2019 As someone who lives in the Interior of Alaska it has been my experience that we in the Interior have more issues with wildfire smoke than those who live in SE Alaska. And our first reported wildfire this year in the Interior was found on April 30th. The bulk of our fires are caused by lightening strikes, and we have already had lightening storms here. The cause of the fire found April 30th is somewhat of a mystery but the suspicion is that it was man-made.

Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay and the rest of SE Alaska is already included as it's adjacent to the border. This is a Canadian site, so the focus is on Canada. I just googled these sites that may be of interest... https://wildfiretoday.com/2019/05/28/wildfire-smoke-map-for-north-america/ http://smoke.alaska.edu/BC1.html Edited May 30, 2019 by xlxo
