sunshine3838 Posted July 3, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 3, 2019 Does anyone know if we can see the salmon run by Creek street now at Ketchikan? Thanks.
Rare karatemom2 Posted July 3, 2019 #2 Share Posted July 3, 2019 Maybe someone who is visiting this week can report back. As a rule, the salmon run begins sometime in July, sometimes earlier sometimes later. We were there once on 4th of July, and there were very few salmon. Last year, we were there between July 5 and 15 - can't remember the exact day we visited Ketchikan, but there were a decent number of salmon swimming there at Creek Street. Later in July and into August is when it really starts to peak. But since it's Mother Nature, there isn't ever an exact prediction - probably varies a little every year so maybe someone who is currently on a cruise can share an update! Rare horseymike Posted July 4, 2019 #4 Share Posted July 4, 2019 We were there last week , no salmon. The tour guide said they had been experiencing a drought in Ketchikan and thought after some rain the salmon would come.
sherryf Posted July 6, 2019 #5 Share Posted July 6, 2019 We usually go the last week of July, and almost never see salmon then. The times we've gone in early August there have been lots of salmon.
Kelli0927 Posted July 6, 2019 #6 Share Posted July 6, 2019 We just got off Radiance today and we did not see any salmon. No rain in any of the ports.
Clairescurtains Posted July 6, 2019 #7 Share Posted July 6, 2019 I guess that no rain is both good and bad. We are going the end of July, hope there has been rain and that the salmon are there.
prish Posted July 6, 2019 #8 Share Posted July 6, 2019 We’ll be in Ketchikan in 10 days, hoping to see some salmon at least. Our first visit to Alaska was in end July and we saw tons of salmon, so I was hoping we’d see some this time round too...
tonamie Posted July 6, 2019 #9 Share Posted July 6, 2019 Our group of four will be in Alaska the first week of August. Keeping our fingers crossed that the rain will be minimal, and that the temperatures will be more seasonal. According to online weather forecasts, it looks like rain the next couple weeks, of and on. Our previous trips to Alaska have all been during the first two weeks of July, so early August will be interesting.
Rare geoherb Posted July 7, 2019 #10 Share Posted July 7, 2019 I was there July 1 and only saw salmon at the hatchery. Some people reported being told that the salmon were running, but I think the reports may have been from vendors selling tours. When we were there in August a few years ago, there were lots of salmon.
