We always stay at the Hilton Garden Inn which is on the bus line between Venice and the airport.   We are not into paying sky high prices for hotels in Venice proper.  Literally 7 minutes from the hotel is all it takes to get into Venice proper by very efficient city bus.  Hotel is lovely with pool, nice restaurant and great service.   We buy a pass for the water bus and travel to all the little islands.  Venice is fabulous. When we want to have some peace and quiet, we jump on the bus and there we go!!!

If you want to be near the port, in Venice, and at a convenient location then you need to stay somewhere in or near the Piazale Roma.  Our "go to" place is called Ca Doge and its a small hotel (no elevator) which is more like an Inn.  It is right on the P. Roma and the closest facility to the People Mover which will take you right to the port. Another popular hotel in that area is called the Best Western Olimpia. One more option is the Santa Croce (slightly more distant but close enough).    As Pink mentioned, there are other options outside of Venice which will mean using a train, bus, taxi or some kind of shuttle to get into Venice.  Personally, I love staying in Venice but there are some decent arguments that support the idea of staying out of town...as far away as Mestre.

We are staying at Casa Sant' Andrea before our cruise. Location, price and reviews on TripAdvisor made this the best choice for us. I was fortunate to book a room with a private bath but if you want to save more money you could share a bathroom.
