Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted December 15, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 15, 2019 It's your choice. The area around the basilica is quite flat, and you can take the St. Joan funicular up higher on the mountain for great views from the top station without any climbing. Or, once up there, you can walk several paths that range in strenuousness. Trail 3A is probably the most difficult: it goes up to the hermitages [or remains thereof] named for Saints Joan (John), Onofre and Magdalena; it isn't too difficult on the first leg, but becomes increasingly challenging – on the last leg you are holding onto to roping, tree roots and branches, trying to avoid the overly-polished stones to find more sure footing. [Be sure to get to the basilica well before the 1pm boy's choir performance – we got there a little after 12 noon and most seats were already taken.]

Rare mskaufman Posted December 19, 2019 #7 Share Posted December 19, 2019 Of course you can always take the funicular up for another view. From the ground it looks like it is going straight up.

jamacka Posted January 12, 2020 #10 Share Posted January 12, 2020 Our cruise offers the funicular to the top and then hike back down. We're wondering how steep and long the trail back down to the monastery is?? Can anyone give a brief description of the trail?
shamrockace Posted March 14, 2021 #11 Share Posted March 14, 2021 Did anyone do the cable cars up? Is it manageable on our own?
