Ship Air Polution

I watch ship arrivals and departures at different ports on PTZTV.

Why are the Carnival ships always spewing black smoke into the air?

Carnival ships always looked like the smoke was darker.  The Tail design shots the exhaust out to the side as opposed to being push straight up so it lingers more.  The smoke is spread out farther and moves vertical much slower.

Now the ships are changing over to various methods of controlling emissions.

Newer ships being built are going to use LNG less pollution for sure. The dark black diesel smoke will be no longer from those ships.

Keep in mind of course that visible emissions are not necessarily worse than invisible emissions.

RCCL has installed scrubbers, where Carnival hasn't done much.....like an old oil burning engine. (there was a thread on how ulgy the scrubbers looked on the retro fits)

It's caused by an imbalance in the air fuel ratio.  My husband is a retired US Navy Captain and that's what he says it is.
