Need to look at what is behind that.

 

The government gave United (and other airlines) billions of $$$ to keep everyone on the payroll until October 1. Otherwise, these 35,000 would have been unemployed months ago and the unemployment rate would be even higher.

 

Since the government $$$ end October 1, these people will lose their jobs then unless the travel economy improves by then. Notice is given now to satisfy laws requiring 60 days notice to the state of pending layoffs.
