What is being subbed for Key West?

Hi. We’re scheduled to go Feb 4. Why would Carnival skip Key West?

Legal battle still playing out in the courts. DeSantis believes regulation of the ports falls to the State and not the local government. Key West believes otherwise.

Further complicating matters is ownership of the cruise ship piers. The city owns the Mallory Square Dock and leases the Outer Mole Pier from the U.S. Navy, but Pier B, the busiest of the three cruise ship docks, is privately owned. The owner of Pier B wants cruise ships of all size to be allowed to dock in Key West.

The courts may find that the City can restrict Mallory Square and potentially restrict or terminate cruise operations utilizing their leased Outer Mole Pier facility, but Pier B, a privately held facility, can continue to operate freely.

Time will tell...

Yes a couple smaller capacity ships docked recently (Azamara & Crystal)

The problem is one of the most recent local ordinances prohibits ships with a capacity of over 1300 from docking at any publicly or privately owned dock. That leaves the non luxury, main stream lines out. The battle continues but I don't think my Jan Carnival cruise is docking there. Its only a 4nt with the KW and Coz itinerary.... I suspect they might just add a sea day. I am will make the most of what ever cards I am dealt.... love cruising and glad to be back.

I am on the Sunrise in early January and scheduled for Key West and Cozumel. I will be very unhappy if Key West is skipped and a sea day added. I specifically chose this cruise because it was the only 4 day Mexico cruise that did not have 2 sea days. I don't care much for Key West itself, but I find anywhere better than another sea day. Carnival is selling shore excursions for Key West for this cruise. If they know it will be skipped, that's very deceptive.

We won’t be getting off the boat if it’s Nassau or Bimini so it’ll be a “sea day” either way for us. To me, there’s nothing exciting about Bimini. You’ve been able to take a ferry there from South Florida for years so I’m surprised it became a cruise port.

Norwegian Dawn is scheduled to dock in Key West tomorrow (Thursday). If it makes it, maybe that’s a good sign.

Norwegian Dawn docked in Key West Mallory Square yesterday , 2,400 passenger capacity . Great News

I would wager that the residents of Key West who overwhelmingly voted to ban all but small cruise ships do not see that as great news.

Not everyone votes. Which I know is another issue altogether. Also, what locals anywhere would honestly vote for more tourism in their city?

It's a push by the wealthy elite and other locals to keep the poor riff raff out of Key West, so they can have it for themselves. That's why the smaller ships are allowed to go. Honestly, I'd probably have the same, selfish, vote as well. They utilize fun, woke, topics like protecting the environment to push their interests. Like the smaller ships are eco machines. Good on DeSantis for protecting the jobs and economy there, while making Key West accessible to more people.

I live in what was once a flourishing tourist (in the summer) area, the Catskill, also sometimes known as the "Borscht Belt". And as the area declined, I assure you that most residents would have voted for more tourism, mostly through getting a casino. (We actually have one now, but since it seems most everyone else does also, it is really not helping that much.)

Oddly, the Chamber of Commerce types, were against what really was the only thing attracting some people, the site of the original Woodstock Festival, since all they could see as a solution was a casino. Then it was developed and now known as Bethel Woods Center for the Arts when the county billionaire (he invented cable tv) bought basically all the land there. Instead of all the politicians passing laws against mass gatherings for entertainment, he now had political backing and even grants. (No federal grant, however, as the late Senator John McCain blocked that.)
