ChiefMateJRK Posted February 25, 2022 #5 Share Posted February 25, 2022 I've only bought travel insurance for one cruise, and it was just NCL's cheap essentials coverage for an Oct 2021 cruise (due to Covid uncertainties). I might buy essentials coverage again (~$35 per person per cruise) but I choose to self-insure for cancellation losses.
gigem_aggies Posted February 25, 2022 #6 Share Posted February 25, 2022 I purchased through Allianz. Essential package through Allianz was about the same as NCL's chepa package. Allianz covers Covid cancellation and trip interruption (in case of the need to quarantine on ship). And, getting my money back was more important to me than FCC. I always travelled pre-covid with the travel insurance attached to our Credit Card. With the additional concerns in contracting covid whilst in a foreign country, we now make sure we get insurance with Covid hospitalization, trip disruption etc included and means that it is a specialised Travel Insurance. I have now used SCTI, Southern Cross Travel Insurance, wonderful to deal with and handling claims. I rang the NCL recommended travel insurance company - Covermore, and was told that they do not cover Covid, so I do not know why NCL would recommend them. STCI only half of Alliance or our private health insurance, NIB.

I've sometimes bought the basic NCL insurance, which was about $35. I bought a GeoBlue policy for an upcoming (land-based) European trip. It was inexpensive ($41.67 for the week) and covers mostly medical expenses, up to $1 Million, but those are the potentially catastrophic losses that I want to be protected against. This. I buy insurance against highly unlikely but catastrophic losses. Otherwise, I self-insure and come out many $$$$$$$$$$$$ ahead in the long run.
Rare Sthrngary Posted February 26, 2022 #12 Share Posted February 26, 2022 @Bluestar01I used to NEVER buy travel insurance. For what every reason, the first time I did was for our cruise in August 2021 on Crystal Cruises. My wife got Covid 8 days before sailing. They paid over $4,000.00 to me within 15 business days after loss was filed. In November 2021, I was on the NCL Joy. My son got sick on an excursion. He had to go to the Ship Hospital. $300.00 later he was fine. The insurance company paid again this time the company paid in 20 business days. I will always buy travel insurance from this point forward. Just my two cents. Cruise Well.
luckyinpa Posted February 26, 2022 #13 Share Posted February 26, 2022 (edited) the best ncl insurance gives you 90% fcc cancel for any reason. the best 3rd party iver seen is 75% CFAR cash. which do you prefer? ive seen many people say they buy yearly plans but im pretty sure those are medical, not cancel for any reason . so if you want that kind of insurance be aware ive heard NCL insurance can be cheaper for older people. unsure if true i know for my particular cruise NCL would have been more less coverage. so compare compare i used tripinsurancestore for the past 5 years and stick with them. their comparison chart is ez to follow and purchase from. also note it depends on what cancel plans are in effect when you book. for instance when i booked my royal cruise they changed to final payment 30 days before the cruise and cancel 2 days before with FCC. therefore. CFAR insurance isnt necessary and i have until 31 days before the cruise to buy insurance. however. you also have to worry if you have preexisting conditions and want them covered. yup lots to think about. also there's the superstition if you always buy it, you never need it. I recommended Southern Cross Travel Insurance to friends who have just returned from USA. Their return was delayed by 5 days because having got Covid whilst in LA. Their hotel, car hire, covid testing etc etc came to over $5000 and they told me, only this morning, that they had received payment in full for their claim in just under a week from submitting claim. So I would say that is exceptional. They couldn't thank me enough for having put them onto SCTI before flying to USA on 17th Dec. Our trip to USA was cancelled because of the NCL cruise cancellations from Miami in early January. I rang SCTI and said I no longer required their Travel insurance and whilst I was on the phone they refunded me my premium that I paid, immediately, less a $35 cancellation fee. Can't complain about that.
GOTTODOIT Posted February 26, 2022 #15 Share Posted February 26, 2022 My friend from Minneapolis St paul, got sick on one of our cruises and had to go into the ship hospital. For 24 hours, the cost was $12,000. Payable before disembarking the ship. It pays to have travel insurance. Fortunately, they were able to claim on their insurance when they got home and got reimbursed.
jclinard Posted February 26, 2022 #16 Share Posted February 26, 2022 I only buy medical. After getting scammed by a travel insurance company, I decided to read the policies of the ones I had for a cruise I already paid for. However, they ignored my e-mails asking for a copy of them (it got to be a game, where I'd send another e-mail, going from "Second Request" to "Tenth Request" before I decided they had no intention of sending me the policy I bought). The most recent policy I did get clearly shows that there is no practical way to collect for trip costs unless you die, in which case you don't need the money. I'm trying to find medical-only from a company where people have actually collected, but I'm not doing well on that search.
