larrybritt Posted March 1, 2022 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2022 We are leaving 3/5 on Sky Princess out of Ft Lauderdale and the early seas report appear to be up to 9-12 ft especially after the first day. I know a lot can change before then. Of course our cabin is on Lido up top mid forward, I know motion little more than mid ship lower, but we were wanting to try to see what was like up by the pool deck. It’s been a while since we have cruised, if these seas are the case anybody recently experience and how was it? We don’t really get sea sick, just curious with the newer ships what to expect. Rare Lady Arwen Posted March 1, 2022 #2 Share Posted March 1, 2022 The motion of the ocean is not really predictable, unless it’s hurricane season. Some days it’s calm, other days a bit rocky, you just never know and nobody can tell you today what you can expect on your cruise. However, Sky Princess is very well equipped to take on all kinds of weather and still give her passengers a smooth ride. Yes, you will feel more motion, high and forward, but no much so much to be concerning for most folks. If you’re nervous, try moving your cabin lower and more midship. I think you will be fine in the location you are in, unless you have a real problem with motion sickness.
skynight Posted March 1, 2022 #3 Share Posted March 1, 2022 9 to 12 foot seas can feel rough. But a lot is determined by the direction of the waves relative to the ship. Seas hitting the ship on the aft quarter tend to cause rolling motion that lends itself to sea sickness. Waves hitting the bow give a more choppy motion. I always take a motion sickness pill before sailing. Waters are normally choppy in that area. Bring your meds
The Mariners Posted March 1, 2022 #4 Share Posted March 1, 2022 Hi We were in hurricane force winds with 10-12 ft seas on Majestic southern tip of New Zealand two years ago with a mid forward cabin and she handled it very well. Yes you could feel movement and we had no sickness problems and speaking to captain a few days later he said the wind was pushing us along behind us which he said helped . Good experience & got some video & photos of it 😁
larrybritt Posted March 1, 2022 Author #5 Share Posted March 1, 2022 We are looking forward to it and even with a little motion as long as there is some sun there will be some fun. My mom always said when it was a bit choppy to have an extra drink or two and it would help you walk straight, lol

NavArch64 Posted March 1, 2022 #8 Share Posted March 1, 2022 You may not want to be out on Lake Superior though .... PS I will be with you on Sky Princess ... I am a naval architect (retired) and would be glad to chat about ship motions at sea.

RMMariner Posted March 1, 2022 #10 Share Posted March 1, 2022 (edited) Never really had problems with waves of that size on a cruise ship. Does not seem like there is much motion, but on our first cruise to Hawaii, the waves were significantly bigger, and mostly from the side. We were on the Grand, and it was the first time I ever got very seasick. Some tips: don't eat fish and chips when you are already feeling queasy, and don't save $10 by not bringing any seasick medication. Don't tell your wife that you never get seasick and not to worry about it. Finally do not be standing out on the deck (beginning to feel better) and have a fellow passenger come and throw up right beside you. Mistakes were made and lessons were learned the hard way. I take seasickness medication now whenever the ship has any significant motion. Never been seasick again. skynight Posted March 1, 2022 #12 Share Posted March 1, 2022 For those that don't know or forgot. Take sea sick meds at the first feeling of being sick. OTC meds do not work after you are sick. After you are sick requires Drs meds.
NavArch64 Posted March 1, 2022 #13 Share Posted March 1, 2022 I would say breezy on Sunday ... could be some energy in the seas ... with winds from the E, ESE and SE ... and Sky Princess heading generally into the wind ... she will no doubt pitch a bit ... the roll will be dampened by the fin stabilizers. The discomfort to some guests will generally be on the upper decks forward. That is where the accelerations will be greatest. It is the accelerations that cause the discomfort. NavArch64 Posted March 1, 2022 #15 Share Posted March 1, 2022 Looks pretty typical to me ... nothing of concern ... wind velocities pretty routine for the area ... I predict, based on the data, moderate ship motions on Saturday night, Sunday and into early Monday, then decreasing ship motions through the middle of the week. We will leave the return to Ft. Lauderdale up to Mother Nature ... you never know. See you onboard Sky Princess for a beautiful voyage.
NavArch64 Posted March 1, 2022 #16 Share Posted March 1, 2022 One final note ... I have been on almost all of the Princess ships ... some at sea in Sea State 7 .. they all have good seakeeping characteristics ... Fincantieri and their hull form designers have done a good job. NavArch64 Posted March 1, 2022 #21 Share Posted March 1, 2022 Always keep in mind relative to wave height .... Seas given as significant wave height, which is the average height of the highest 1/3 of the waves. Individual waves may be more than twice the significant wave height.
