A dear friend is on from the previous cruise and reports no Covid cases for passengers on last cruise. Apparently a few crew did test positive yesterday. We’re wholly unconcerned. We need to live or lives at our own comfort level. We disembarked the Regatta on Tuesday, May 3. At least three members of the Production crew were quarantined for most of the cruise due to Covid. I spoke on Monday to one of the crew members who got sprung from quarantine. He wasn't aware that on the previous cruise that 50 passenger cabins were put into isolation; he did acknowledge that the Quartet was in lockdown for a period of time. The information on the ship is compartmentalized. There is no way to know how many passengers contracted Covid on the California Cruise since there was no periodic testing once we boarded the ship. Chances that no passengers came down with Covid are remote. Many passengers were hacking away for multiple days. The vast majority of passengers didn't wear a mask the entire cruise. As a matter of fact, the first night the comedian performed, there were approximately 200 passengers attending the performance in the Regatta Lounge. Twelve passengers wore masks; I know because I counted them. It is a matter of choice whether you wear a mask or not. But let's be honest--Covid is still quite contagious and it spreads quickly. Why should the Regatta be any different? As many infectious disease and public health experts have said for many months: We might be tired of Covid, but the disease isn't tired of us.
Robjame Posted May 5, 2022 #152 Share Posted May 5, 2022 (edited) For what it is worth: There are many Covid cases on various cruise lines. As of May 4th - of 92 ships in US waters there were 76 that reported Covid cases and 53 of those are going through the investigation process. The good news is very few are serious (hospitalized, ICU or dying). This underlines the need for each person to manage your risk tolerance according to your own personal health, age, situation, etc. No size fits all. Doubt It Posted May 5, 2022 #153 Share Posted May 5, 2022 Thank you kindly for all the posts after my query. Blessings on each of you. The CDC on May 3 indicated that people should mask while travelling - would this apply to my dear friends voyage on the Regatta right now? They left LA yesterday. I note the reported covid in the specialities.......would the CDC directive require the guests to mask, also given the covid in the staff of the speciality? Thank you very much. We are some of the less than 10% that are still wearing masks. There were at least three members of the entertainment staff that were quarantined and one whom we never saw the entire cruise. A friend of ours did see someone in a hazmat suit at the cabin next-door to theirs. The cruise lines will never give you an exact total of cases because they do not want bad publicity. We had several times the experience that Oceania will not inform you properly when something went wrong. Just to say it very mildly!

On Regatta now. No Covid for guests on the cruise that disembarked 5/3 according to a friend this was on that cruise and has continued on with us as a back to back. We embarked on 5/3, to our knowledge no guests with Covid on this cruise. Some staff have been in quarantine, however. One guest was disembarked in Cabo, she was unwell with another ailment. Yes, I do know what it was but it is not my place to share. It was not Covid, we wish her well. Edited May 8, 2022 by LNielsen

My point was about the future when we may be able to manage it as a normal cold in fully vaccinated people. I’ll bet we’re close to that future now. I picked up Covid a couple of weeks ago at a party along with about 20 other people (that I know about). To a person, this has acted like a cold. (One person also had some digestive issues; he was the only one who wasn’t vaccinated.) Very different from when my husband had Covid two years ago. Thank God!
Rare Harters Posted May 9, 2022 #159 Share Posted May 9, 2022 Although, with a cold, you wouldnt be getting close to the 200 deaths a day we still have here. This is still a significant killer.
Doubt It Posted May 9, 2022 #160 Share Posted May 9, 2022 How is it on dear Regatta right now? I have very elderly friends aboard. Sigh. Huge increase in CDC Orange level investigation. Regatta is in orange. Thank you all dear folks.

Susan Scot Posted May 10, 2022 #162 Share Posted May 10, 2022 If there are enough cases among the staff that the entire staff is being tested daily then it is highly unlikely that there are no cases among passengers although it is likely that they are not being mentioned for financial reasons. Cruise lines make more money when passengers are out and about spending rather than hiding out in their cabins trying to avoid a virus. Question for someone on board-“Do you hear people coughing when you are around larger groups of passengers?”

Not every cough is Covid. COULD it be? Perhaps. Also, the sign directing crew members to daily testing location disappeared overnight. We’re a few doors down from the medical center, it’s been quiet.

I have friends who have had colds recently who have repeatedly tested negative for Covid. This has become more common as people have stopped wearing masks and various viruses in addition to Covid are circulating. Also, many people who may be positive for Covid can be asymptomatic and not coughing or having any other symptoms; this is especially true if they are vaccinated. 6

We have just left the 13th May cruise from LA to Vancouver and having worn our masks ALL the time apart from selecting and eating meals. We were clearly in the minority. We have disembarked today 25thMay and my husband has tested positive with our home testing kits in Vancouver. Thankfully we didnt have to test to get into Vancouver but this is so stressful aswe have had to cancel our flights to LA and rejig our flights to the UK. Mask wearing on a cruise line where social distancing is difficult would be a safe option so why dont they make it manditory?

You mentioned in another thread that your husband developed a mild cough 3 days prior to disembarking. If you had tested prior to leaving the ship & turned up positive Oceania would have covered your hotel & helped with air changes (assuming you tested neg prior to boarding). Oceanurse Posted May 29, 2022 #173 Share Posted May 29, 2022 I was on the May 03-May 13th 2022 cruise on Regatta. My girlfriend and I wore masks consistently except while eating which I admit was frequent. The afternoon we returned home I developed a sore throat and felt achy. I tested that evening and was negative. By Sunday I had a cough and still did not feel well. I tested again and it was positive. Luckily my girlfriend continued to test negative. We did not attend any of the entertainment. We did play bingo and visited the casino- always wearing a mask. The staff always wore masks along with the vendors in the port. The cruise was wonderful and I’m glad we went. Luckily I have fully recovered and am already planning for the next cruise!
