Covid Outbreak on Regatta - 50 Cabins Quarantined After Cruise

I just got off of an 18 day sailing from Papeete to Los Angeles. A number of passengers developed Covid during the cruise and were quarantined in their staterooms for up to 10 days. Additionally a number of crew were infected including the string quartet, performers and band members. On a previous cruise the cruise director had Covid.

At the end of the cruise there were 50 cabins (most with 2 per cabin) with sick and Covid positive passengers. There were just under 500 passengers on the cruise. We were escorted off the ship by crew in hazmat suits and taken to a hotel where the manager confirmed that there were 50 rooms for passengers. The ship provided medical transport vans but we were told we could take a cab if we wanted. I commented that this would expose cab drivers to Covid and was told it was management’s decision.

We were given a number to call at Oceania for questions and concerns. The message said that we had to email questions and concerns because the phones aren’t staffed.

Oceania told us we’d be contacted daily by a medical team contracted by the ship. I called them on the second day of quarantine at the hotel and they had no report from Oceania on sick and infected passengers and couldn’t help us. We were also told by Oceania we’d be tested after five days of quarantine to know it was safe to leave. It appears as though no testing is planned or scheduled.

No announcements were ever made about the outbreak and no additional measures were taken to slow the spread of Covid.

Does not sound like Oceania is doing a good job of taking care of their guests.  Shame on them.

Were masks worn by all crew at all times?  Were masks required for all passengers except for when ACTIVELY eating and drinking?  Both Crystal and Regent did that on our two cruises with them in the last 6 months.  Very few cases.

Crew, mostly. Passengers - at beginning maybe 20 on entire ship. By the end of the cruise the word was out,  not by the ship but it was just obvious, so maybe 30% with masks. No social distancing or other measures even with a significant outbreak. No announcement from the ship.

Masks were worn by staff but very few passengers wore masks even though many of them were hacking and coughing. Many deluded themselves by saying it was just a cold as they were busy infecting others.

This explains our late embarkation yesterday! Hope you return to good health soon!

I’m not surprised embarkation was delayed. The hazmat team didn’t have us off until about 10:30 and all the cabins had to disinfected. It’s funny, we say the deep cleaning crews working as we left but nothing from Oceania during 18 days at sea to protect us.

Sorry I cannot blame O when they are trying to meet needs of guests by not requiring masking. Guests are accountable for their behavior and being maskless while you cough and sneeze, or fail to self test when not feeling well is far from responsible in my opinion. O can only do so much.

They were working during the cruise

We saw them often at rooms.

We are currently on the Regatta and the entire crew is masked but very few passengers are wearing masks. We have sailed several times post Covid and make sure that we have our masks on in handy unless we are in our room or outside.

So you got on the ship right after the cruise from Tahiti? Did they tell you anything about the outbreak on the previous cruise and that everything had been cleaned thoroughly? Hope so!!

I agree with Bonnie

"you can't fix stupid"

If people who are travelling while covid is still alive  & well

you cannot figure out to wear a mask in public where people are coughing around you  then what is Oceania or any other business going to do?

Common sense would tell you to mask up & stay away from people 🙄

Oh great......500 MORE Covid possible cases to Los Angeles.......as or numbers are already going up.  I would love to hear from more passengers on the cruise as to how the hotel situation was handled or NOT handled......as we have two cruises scheduled over the next 5 months.....We were also on a 14 day trip in the Caribbean in March....actually the FIRST cruises that were allowed to NOT wear masks....

We chose to wear them for a few more days...but if there were people coughing, etc., I would still choose to wear - rules or no rules.  And shame o O for not enforcing the renewed mask policy.....especially as they pretty much were aware that they were suffering an outbreak?  Just when you think that things are looking better....sigh.....

The hotel is doing a great job. Very great service and luckily big rooms with ocean views and balconies. It’s not terrible.

The medical care follow up promised in writing from Oceania doesn’t exist.  We’re on our own. There are some very sick people and some are not Americans with insurance or familiarity with our health system.

Recently on a cruise with Seabourn, people wore masks until they sat down for meals. It became very clear towards the end of the 11 day cruise that there were many passengers in the buffet area, sounding like they had covid. Coughing and sneezing, using hands instead of elbows, blowing noses into napkins!!!! I know a few people thought us odd picking up serving sooons there, with a serviette around the handles!

Are there no tests on embarkation?

Are there no tests on embarkation?

Most cruise lines, including Oceania, now want you to test before embarkation, usually within 2 or 3 days depending on embarkation port and whether you get a PCR or an antigen test. Even if you are tested at the port you still could be harboring an infection that just hasn't reached the level required to generate a positive test . So it's not difficult for an infected person to slip through any pre embarkation testing and then start spreading the infection while on board. Since the current variants are so transmissible makes it easy for an infection to spread very quickly on the ship.

So according to the OP numbers, 50 rooms booked at the Hotel, 2 per room that's about a 100 people, they state there were 500 guests on board. That's about 10%. Wow. Do we have any one else reporting on this?

The end of this thread talks quite a bit about the Covid conditions on Regatta last week.  There were also some emails between friends that indicated others tested positive within a day or two of arriving home.  Things were pretty normal from Papeete to Honolulu but turned around as we left Hawaiian waters.

20% 😉

I thought I replied to this. I said, it was a rough Monday night. So it's a double WOW, twice as bad as I thought.

The original poster did not clarify if the infected numbers were passengers only or passengers and staff. Whatever the answer the numbers are quite concerning. Those of us cruising within the near future should take extra precaution during transportation to the ship and while onboard.
