Why do you pay so much money for alcohol?

Recommended Posts

Why people choose to spend money on alcohol (or anything) while on a cruise aside (whatever the choice - drink, don't drink; eat steak, don't eat steak; gamble, don't gamble, spa/no spa...we all agree is a choice), I think the real question is why do the cruise lines charge so much for the drinks?ย ๐Ÿค”

Multiple Live reviews for VV cruises people reported paying $20+ for a drink, some shots were over $30 - yikes!ย

Of course, they charge those rates cuz they can, but geez. They're often making more on a single drink/shot than they pay for the entire bottle - that's a hefty markup.๐Ÿฅบ

On my cruises (HAL) the drink prices are less than I see at resorts on land.ย  I don't find them overly expensive at all.ย  But, bottom line - you can't take it with you.ย  Either spend it and enjoy life or penny pinch and risk being miserable - your choice.

For many cruise lines the actual profit comes from onboard sales, especially bar sales. It only stands to reason they'll charge as much as they can to enhance the profit.

When I asked this question in another topic, it really hit a nerve with some people..so I thought I would ask it here instead.

The cruise lines charge extremely large amounts of money to buy alcohol. In some cases these drink packages can add 50-60% (per person) in addition to the cost of your stateroom.

ย

Why are you willing to pay so much for something you don't even need?ย

ย

Why not save all that money for another cruise?

ย

It seems to me that they're exploiting you, and you just go along with it.ย

Personally, I don't spend any money on alcohol during cruises, because I don't really like it, but if someone ca afford it, I don't see why they wouldn't do it, it's their life.

Well I have to admit that P&O cruises alcohol pricing is fairly reasonable and we dont get charged service fee on every transaction either. However we do buy a wine package as we have a bottle during dinner between us. so 10-20% saving buying each bottle, the drinks packages - we dont bother we would have to drink 8 or so minimum everyday to make it worth it and we only drink in the evening normally so not worth it for us.ย

Agreed.ย  It's a pointless question - OP is essentially asking why your values are different then theirs.ย  OP could also ask "Why do you spend money on a luxury car when a cheaper model will also get you where you're going"?ย  Maybe OP is just virtue signaling?ย

ย

Does the luxury one have more cup holders? ย If not, then what's the problem! ย ๐Ÿ˜€

I kind of feel like you just want to stir the pot for whatever reason....maybe you get entertainment value out of it. I don't drink alcohol so I don't spend money on it, but I agree with other posters who've said everybody chooses to spend money on something that's a 'waste' to somebody else.

Examples:

I think getting a fancy new cell phone every couple of years would be a waste of MY money, but I know tons of people that do it. I have a Tracfone I pay $20/month for and only replace if it breaks.

I think upgrading to a bigger, better, nicer house would be a waste of MY money, but just about everybody I know has. I live in a 1,000 sf fixer upper.

I think spending money in the casino would be a waste of MY money, so I don't do it.

I think paying for specialty dining when I've already paid for dining would be a waste of MY money, so I rarely do it.

I like to book ship excursions rather than on my own, which lots of CCers swear is a waste of money, because it's worth MY money to me.

I like to pay for spa treatments on a cruise even though a lot of people think they are overpriced and a waste of money, because I think it's worth it for ME.

ย

I bet OP spends on lots of things that I, and others, would consider a waste of money. WHY do you do that??

ย

PS I also don't have children. I can't see the logic of how having children gives you a good return on investment. What if they turn out to be terrible humans?? What a WASTE of money that would be!

ย

Now that you mention it going on a cruise is a waste of my money. ย I can see everything on YouTube so why travel at all! ย ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€
