evelynw2 Posted July 8, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 8, 2023 Hello, For anyone who has done the 12 night itinerary, were you able to see the northern lights while traveling between ports or at any time during the cruise ?
Rare cruisestitch Posted July 8, 2023 #2 Share Posted July 8, 2023 Since it doesn’t really get very dark during the summer, it’s not likely. But you might get lucky.

The northern lights might be seen from mid August through March. Other times of the year they won’t be seen because in the summer months because there is almost 24 hours of daylight in Iceland. swjumbo Posted July 8, 2023 #5 Share Posted July 8, 2023 An ‘expert’ gave his expert view on another thread and told us that if it was cloudy you won’t be able to see them! Really? Lol
Rare groryjm Posted July 8, 2023 #6 Share Posted July 8, 2023 very unlikely in the summer because it's too light but if you are talking about a cruise from Southampton or Amsterdam then ther is a very slight chance you may on the way there or the way back once the ship is North of the UK. I'll post next week if we see them from Silhouette but I doubt it

cublet Posted July 8, 2023 #8 Share Posted July 8, 2023 Hello, A clue as to dates and ports of call would be useful, but if it's 2023's July & August sailings, then I'd say very little chance. Here's one (out of about 100) I prepared earlier - March on P&O Aurora:

It woud depend on the type of cloud cover. I remember when I was a kid they taught us the different kinds of clouds. I wonder if they still teach that? The main problem will be the hours of daylight at the northern latitudes.
gerelmx Posted July 8, 2023 #10 Share Posted July 8, 2023 It depends on many factors, last year in August 22,Summit cruise at night after Akureyri we see them, there were solar storms that favored the sighting.
Elainemh Posted July 8, 2023 #11 Share Posted July 8, 2023 (edited) On Silhoutte last Sept 2022 we were able to see the Northern Lights after leaving Akureyri. They made announcement so that passengers could go out on the decks to see them. That was one of the highlights of our cruise. Spurs Fans Posted July 8, 2023 #12 Share Posted July 8, 2023 If you read through last year’s August NYC to Iceland 14 day cruise, some people did report seeing northern lights around 2 a.m. a couple of nights. There is an app called Aurora that gives you the percentage chance of you seeing northern lights based upon your location. I’ve downloaded for our August cruise to Iceland.
