I work in a large office with over 100 people and only one person smokes (a woman in her 60s). I was in Vegas last weekend and when checking into the Wynn, we were told that if cigarette smoke is smelled in the room, the cleaning fee would be an additional $250. If cannabis was smelled, the cleaning fee would be $1000. And a waiver was signed to that effect. I loved eating and gambling in the Park-MGM...totally smoke free hotel and casino. I was never much of a gambler on the ships, but since Bliss, Encore, Joy and Prima all have the enclosed smoking rooms, I spend much more time in the casino (as do many others I know). If you time it just right, you can smell smoke when the door opens but it doesn't permeate the whole deck and down to the deck below, as it does on the Getaway. I have no dog in the hunt regarding marijuana usage. But, it seems the ship security teams are focused on those who are smoking weed on board. Why guests do that, given the proliferation of gummies is confusing. Foreign ports take marijuana pretty serious as well.

The HEPA would remove most of the particles of tobacco smoke, including the allergen part and really what most people get annoyed with. However, you are correct in that it can't remove the VoCs that are in cigarette smoke. Those particles are so small they can't be captured by just the standard HEPA. NCL would need a chemical absorbent filter in addition, which is costly.

However, as a cigar smoker I don't want them anywhere near us! I hate the smell of cigarette smoke and get highly put off when a cigarette smoker comes into the cigar lounge. And to the person that claims to be allergic to tobacco smoke: it's your problem, not ours. I would respectfully suggest that you pick a different vacation venue! Unless you see the person definitely smoking, it's hard to see where the smoke is coming from. I thought I saw a person on a lower deck vaping on their deck, but I wasn't 100% sure and I didn't want to report someone who was innocent. I definitely would have if I was positive.

People just need to learn to coexist and perhaps if the mega ships scattered a few more smoking areas on the ship you wouldn’t have people breaking the rules of course this is just my opinion I don't even think KY or TN (alleged tobacco states) are doing any long term planning on tobacco taxes....or, at least they shouldn't be. That's a very rapidly declining tax base. Depending on it is a fool's exercise.

But, I've also seen people smoking "weed" where there are kids in close proximity. Report it or let it slide? I've been known to politely let the offenders know there are kids around and they might want to rethink their activity. Most take it to heart. A few have given me the "stink eye" and moved...allegedly to somewhere else. That said, I have seen some puffing away in a smoking area with their kids in tow. Nothing I can do about that, but talk about irresponsible. You see all kinds on a cruise ship. Some cruise lines are worse than others. And, I see some are really starting to "crack down" on all the buffoons who think the ship is all theirs to do as they wish.

While you may not be able to see the offending passenger, reporting it allows ship's security to focus their cameras on an area where they will be able to see people smoking on their balconies. Smell something, say something.

If you're selling to a shrinking market, raising prices will shrink your market even more quickly until it disappears. The more you raise the prices, the quicker the market goes away. Tobacco companies know this all too well. They have been trying to diversify. First, it was into vaping. That presented its own health risks. And, it has come under scrutiny as a result. Brown Williamson has gone out of business. Phillip Morris has stated they are moving away from "heated tobacco products" (their words, not mine). As you point out, gov't is taxing tobacco products to the point where they're too expensive to use. Bottom line, cruise lines will continue to shrink the areas where smoking is allowed, and like in casinos, restrict those who can smoke there (like, if the casino isn't open or you're not gambling, you can not smoke there). NCL in particular is moving to smaller and smaller areas, even enclosed areas, where smoking is allowed. I'm betting in the next 5 years, smoking will be prohibited indoors. And, the places smoking is allowed outdoors will be fewer and smaller.

I'm obviously hardcore about this, but I don't think I'd report someone for vaping outside. It is vapor, and while indoors it might have a brief odor outside it's practically undetectable. You'll notice you thought you saw someone vaping - not that you smelled anything. Smoke from anything combustible (weed or tobacco) is totally different. The smell can overpower you.
