Another medallion question

Does the medallion app function while your iPhone is on airplane mode?  For us Canadians, use of smart phones outside of the country can be problematic, so keeping it on airplane mode should prevent me from coming home to a horrendous cellphone bill.  But it’s a problem if the app then doesn’t work.

If any fellow Canadians want to jump in with phone coverage tips for cruising, that would be great.  We’re with Shaw, which is transitioning to Rogers.

For the app to work on the ship, your phone has to be in airplane mode. Then you will turn wi-fi on to connect to the ships INTRANET, which assuming you have an internet package allows you to connect to the web.

Full instruction will be provided when you board.

Yes

The app works on ship's intranet. Entirely free/included.

So, airplane mode, turn on wifi, connect to ship's WiFi and use app.

This does not enable Internet access - that, you have to buy and log in to.

App works without buying any Internet packages, without cell signal, etc.

Just to clarify in case you've not picked up on this...you must be on the ship, on airplane mode and connected to the ship's Intranet wifi system.  To specifically answer the last part of your question...your phone MUST be on airplane mode for the app functions to work properly.

If you don't want to get hit with (possibly) a CRAZY high phone carrier connection charge for Cellular at Sea...

It's definitely a smart move to put it on airplane mode to be doubly safe but technically as long as the wifi is connected this shouldn't happen the phone should 100% use the wi-fi and not incur any cellular data charges.  Airplane mode protects against the phone falling back on cellular connection if there is a gap in wifi coverage.
