hey, smitheroo. please dont ever, ever put your cabin number  on your key card. (hopefully you were only joking about that) if not, and i dont even know you and we'll probably never meet, but i would personally send you magnets, door decorations or any other type of identifiable items, so you can find your cabin, and keep you safe. if you lose or misplace your card, anyone finding it, now has access to your cabin.

of course, you can always leave a trail of bread crumbs (lol)

It just occurred to me to use an Air Tag.

oh boy, then he would need to use an iPhone app to find the Air Tag. He can’t of course….

However Air Tags are great for finding a kid or a husband, I should think.

(I lost my luggage off the Eurostar last July…a hapless passenger took it by mistake & it took 3 weeks to get it back) so Air Tags are my go-to item this year.

yeah, I did think of that. I dont immediately think of all the horrible things that can happen to me but they eventually do sink in.

I’ve got a free magnet in mind to bring. If it gets stollen I can request a new one or get it replaced in a few months. If someone steals it I hope they love it so much they buy the quilt kit from the company. Making sure not to have anything that identifies myself as a solo traveler on my door is also important for safety reasons.

must be the same magnet I got from the store in Skagway?  Great quilting materials

Haha no but I have been there and to every other quilt shop along the way of my two Alaskan cruises. The magnet is from a company called Legit Quilts and they make the COOLEST quilt patterns that are very non traditional. The pattern I’m working on now is a skull with over 100 colours but I’m trying to convince a friend to do their F18 fighter jet pattern for her husband who use to fly them.

I bought a bunch of 1/2 yard pieces with Alaskan themes- Sled Dogs, Sasquatch etc.  Dont know what I am going to do with them yet but they sure are cute. I dont quilt lol.

that’s impossible… kind of like being asked not to think about a polar bear in the snow. that soon becomes all one can think about. it’s impossible for most people to walk past staterooms without seeing the doors. that’s simply not the way the eyes - or the human brain - works. the door decorations do indeed “grab you” as you pass by. it’s not a choice for most people. it’s a public area of the ship. for the duration of your cruise, you “own” the inside of your stateroom door, you don’t own the outside of that same door. what other public facing areas of the ship are passengers allowed to deface, er, I mean, “decorate?”

look, it’s not important what you or i think. NCL, rightly or wrongly, has made the determination for us. door decor is no more. that’s their policy and has been for a few years. what actually happens on the ship is largely left to the discretion of the captain and those he entrusts to enforce the policy or make judgments about when or if to enforce it. it’s not for the good people of cruise critic to interpret or revise or justify exceptions to the policy, any more than it is for them to debate when smoking on a stateroom balcony is permitted. (it isn’t.) or whether opening the barrier between stateroom balconies is permitted. (it isn’t.)

as for other things that are flammable, such as clothing and paper advertisements, books and magazines and hair spray and lithium ion batteries and such… again, it’s not for the good people of cruise critic to make that determination. it’s already been done for them by NCL. risks have been assessed and policies have been made.

i can only add that another reason door decorations have been banned is the possibility of firefighters becoming entangled in them in low light and high smoke conditions. some decorations are flammable, some - such as garlands and tinsel and string and decorative spider webs - can actually impede the progress of firefighters as they attempt to fight the fire or get to where the fire is located.

we can all have a good laugh about how silly this is… until something happens and we all see how serious this really is.

Ok, no books, magazines, newspaper or DAILIES because they are all flammable. Honestly, I havent heard of something so foolish in a long time. Using your analogy, people who live in an apartment complex shouldnt put wreaths on the exterior of their apartment door, a well accepted decorating practice. Not only might they offend, they can be flammable as well. NCL has the right to make any rule that they want (as long as it isnt a human rights issue)  The fact is these decorations are still being used so someone isnt enforcing. I dont care one way or the other. I dont do it and somehow I manage to not look at them walking past. unless I want to.  Look at the fish on the carpet. NCL does have rules against fire hazards such as small appliances which they do enforce.   Maybe there was an incident somewhere sometime where people were posting  things on their door like political stickers (just one example) and that caused some problem, maybe even fights in the corridors lol. If NCL doesnt want door decorations they need to enforce it like they manage to enforce many other rules without problems. ANd the Captain has a lot more to worry about than this.

The fish are disappearing. All the new corridor carpets are sans fish.

But what if there are ten cabins in a row with magnets? Anything is possible. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?

Perhaps, but there's an eighty one percent chance that mine will be the only poison control magnet.

Even if there is only one other, I have a fifty percent chance of finding my cabin.  Those odds are better than anything in the casino.

We had 3 cabins this past August on the Joy and I had magnets made to put on each door celebrating our cruise.  I think on day 2 our room steward told us nothing was allowed on the doors, no big deal we took them off and put them on the walls inside our rooms.  Meanwhile, halfway down the hall to the elevators there was a cabin with a door fully decorated the entire cruise.  I guess it's just a matter of whether or not the room steward wants to enforce the rule.

The door decoration policy was recently and quietly changed to be allowed now. I only know it changed because an NCL subsidiary announced the change in the facebook groups for their charters...

Charter cruises are TOTALLY DIFFERENT than regular cruises.  Rules are made by the people charting the cruises: example Sixman Music Cruises-- rules made by Sixman.

I'm guessing that it depends upon the reason for the rule.  If a rule is in place for safety reasons, then I doubt the people chartering the cruise have any input.  If it's more for marketing or aesthetics, then they certainly may.

The rule claims to be to avoid fire hazards. That’s not something they change for charters. If they’re allowing on charters then obviously it isn’t a significant enough risk to justify the rule.

I really doubt it ever had anything to do with safety. Probably somebody wanted to make a political statement and put something on their door identifying themselves as a member of the spots. Their neighbor who is a member of the stripes got offended and after a night of high utilization of the unlimited drinks package resorted to fisticuffs. And instead of assigning room stewards as hall monitors NCL decided to ban them.

When I was religiously reading the CC chat boards for my 2021 transatlantic, I read that a small child choked on something they took off of one of the decorated doors and this led to the door decorating ban by NCL. I can't find the original posts, but that it what I recall.
