Regent Sevens Seas Mariner

A video about our last cruise "A Glimpse of Fall" aboard Regent Seven Seas Mariner to Canada and New England. The highlight of the cruise was definitely the food so in this video you will see a lot of food and drinks passing by. About the suite, however, we were not so satisfied and not worthy of being called a luxury cruise line. The video also includes short sections about the activity we did at each port of call. Enjoy!

We were on this same Cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it....We were in a Mariner Suite on deck 9 and found this suite to be one of the best located, most roomy and quiet suite that we have had on any ship. This was our fourth cruise on the Mariner and did not find the ship showing her age in fact quite the opposite..... we would cruise on her any time that the itinerary was suitable. In fact, we had cruised on the Mariner from Florida to Los Angeles when the ship was brand new and frankly, we much preferred her now!

Wow, you had a very nice suite, you are lucky! I agree with your opinion about the general condition of the ship and public areas but our room was really bad. The shower was in the bathtub and old. I'm not the tallest but it was too low for me so I always had to shower bent over. The mattress was completely worn out so after a couple of days I had back and headaches every morning. I asked for another mattress but there was no available at the ship... . For the rest, I found everything very good but you understand that a good bed and bathroom are actually among the most important things. I don't know if I would go with Regent again unless I had a room like you hahaha. The waiting lines for the buffetrestaurant La Veranda was a little odd too for a luxury cruise liner.

Jimmyke thank you for your video. It looks like you are your group had a lovely trip with delicious looking food and wines. Mariner was my first RSSC cruise in approximately 2003?, the ship does still look amazing. The dining venue table settings very elegant to enhance the beautifully presented foods. I thought the cabins looked great, but sorry about the mattresses. They usually have some “in stock” just in case.

Maybe the 'stock' comes from other rooms but the ship was almost full... . Yet one positive thing I would like to mention: my mother got another room with walk-in shower because it is not possible for her to get into a bathtub.

We just left that suite.  It was great! It was our first time to be in that level of suite.

Jimmy me Glad your mom was able to get a shower room. My sister and I always took a yearly cruise with our mother, and we looked forward to cabins without the tub. It was easier for her and she could be a little more independent. Your mom looks like she loves to travel and is a trooper! Enjoy every adventure😊

@Jimmyke Thanks so much for this fabulous video! We have never been on the Mariner but we have two cruises booked.

Is Newport a good port to walk around on your own without a tour? The mansions look beautiful!

It was a very rainy and cold day so we didn't see much of the town. We did a tour by bus to see the mansions which would also have been nicer on a sunny day. After the tour we didn't feel to go into town. We saw the town from the bus but it didn't seem that interesting. There is Fort Adams which I think was close to the port.... . We found Newport to be the least port of the route but this was probably partly due to the bad weather. We had an excellent guide with lot's of stories about the rich then and now.

We didn't look if there are different bathrooms because I didn't expect that old type of bathroom... . Does the majority of suites has this kind of bathroom? Do all Regent ships have this kind of bathroom? I was thinking only the oldest ships like Mariner?

Yes, she's 81 but still loves to see all corners of the world. She almost never skips a port even though it takes energy from her. And we are happy to spend time together at a slow pace and make some memories forever!

All Regent ships seem to be a bit different from each other.  We just got off our first Regent cruise and it was aboard Mariner.  Overall a very beautiful ship and our Penthouse Suite was very comfortable with one huge exception.....  The above mentioned tub/shower.  We will not book any Regent ship in the future with that layout.  We also did not catch it on the ship's deck plans.  Food was, as usual anywhere these days, hits and misses.  We agree the La Veranda buffet has the worst traffic flow possible.  There doesn't seem to be any plan, just wade right in and get what you can.  We enjoyed the cruise greatly inspire of these complaints.  The problems we noticed that are not easily fixed are why would anyone build a modern cruise ship with bars, grills, special events on the pool deck and no retractable cover?  All Viking Ocean ships pool decks are protected by a retractable glass roof.  When it rains they close it.  The event goes on in air conditioned splendor.  When the weather is nice, it is open....  Simple.  And in the big scheme of things not much cost given what is spent on art, etc on modern ships.  My final dislike was the tendering.  Fortunately St. Barts was our only tender port but it was the worst tendering we have experienced on over 20 lines and 50 cruises.  Why wait and wait to fill to max when not one but two other tenders were waiting astern to discharge and pickup passengers?  And the physical boats used are very cramped and shabby.  No way could I possibly sit with my legs straight.  Just too cramped.  As beautiful as Mariner is we could never do a World Cruise on her.  Or any other ship with an exposed pool deck used for multi functions.   Two WCs on Viking and never such terrible tendering nor an event on the pool deck spoiled by weather.  Just one couple's opinion but would like to see improvements to Regent as  you expect better when they are usually about 50% more than comparable Viking Oceans itineraries.  We would like to sail Regent again.

The same goes for us, although we enjoyed the cruise, it keeps us from booking with the mariner anymore.

Thanks for the review. Hope you will provide a review of your suite(s) for "SuiteGuru" to help others in the future.

We love Mariner.

In our opinion it has the best layout of public areas of all the Regent ships.

However, care needs to be taken in choosing suites. Those marked with an asterisk on the deck plans are shower only; the bath/shower combo having been taken out and replaced with a large shower cubicle that many guests prefer.

Also for us we find the basic suites to be a bit snug (smaller than Navigator & Voyager), so we usually opt for a Penthouse (2 cabin upgrade offers can help) or Horizon suite.

Yes, I learned the symbols on the deckmlans at some point after final pay.  At no time in the booking process did it get mentioned.  Not by Regent personnel nor my TA.  No matter, we had a good cruise in spite of the tub.  We now know what to look for.  Agree the Penthouse Suites are very nice.

Very interesting, thanks! Nice website, I will try to add a review.

The Mariner was the third Regent ship on which we cruised in about 2003 (then it was Radisson). We cruised her again in 2015. Like all ships, she gets a bit worn and tired right before a dry dock, and shines afterwards. However, some things don’t change. While we really like the Mariner, there are a few problems that are permanent. For one thing, we find the suites from category H up through concierge to be a bit small for our liking (these are all the same size, about 300 sq. ft. Including the balcony, which makes interior space around 250 sq. ft.). Some of these suites have a bathtub/shower combination, wherein headroom is in short supply. Also, the tub bottom is about 8” above the bathroom floor, making entry and exit difficult (and for some of us, dangerous).  Many of these suites have been converted to shower stall only. But the bathrooms are too small to have a tub also, so there is none. We won’t book in a suite with that tub/shower combination, but that is no solution for guests who want a bathtub too. Other than these issues, the Mariner is a great ship on which to cruise.

Thanks for this comprehensive info. Everyone seems to share the same opinion about the suites and bath shower combo. Strange that this remains possible for a highly rated (and not cheap) cruise line as the suite remains an important factor for satisfaction after all. Those who want a bath will not be satisfied here either. I tried it but the bathtub was too small.
