help! Which tango show

The tour company we plan to use at the end of our cruise in Buenos Aires gave us about 6 tango shows to choose from. We've narrowed it down to a new one that opened last October called CHE TANGO or LA VENTANA or EL QUERANDI. Anyone who has gone to any of these care to comment on

1. the show glitzy or traditional

2. dinner and wine

3. how good are the seats without having to spend extra for V.I.P.

We had told our tour company we preferred a traditional show and this is what they recommended.

Our seats were quite good as this is a relatively small venue. We were second table from the stage. It's a rather "clubby" looking room from the 1920 era.

Food was okay, not exceptional. House wine was okay. You can order from a wine menu if you wish and pay extra for it.

The show was interesting as it was kind of the history of tango from early style to modern with some excellent vocals.

If I had it to do over again, I'd still select the same one.

We went to El Viejo Almacen which is traditional and we loved it!

Most of us have been to just one Tango house, so a comparison is difficult. No matter which one you pick, you will have a good time.

We did the Che Tango in La Boca and thought it was an amazing show. This was on our own and not thru the cruiseline. The seating was very comfortable most of the people who went to the cruiseline Tango show on our sailing commented about how they were crowded in there.

We booked ours through Ricardo at Defrantur and he gave us several choices. His driver picked us up around 7:30 pm and dropped us back around midnight.

We did not use any of the ship's tours, but should have in the Falklands!

I believe that I read somewhere that El Viejo Almacen has 2 shows - one with dinner and one without - Does anyone know if that's true? What time is the show without the dinner? Am interested in either El Viejo or Che Tango - any comments or suggestions ?

Yes, there were 2 shows in January. I think the first one started at 8 pm and the second at 10 pm. You can do either with or without dinner. The dinner for 8 pm show is after and the one for 10 pm is before the show.

Why in the Falklands?

Because Celebrity had a exclusive arrangement for the 3 places where you see Gentoo and King Penguins. Read my travelogue for details.

Private operators can only go to Gypsy Cove which had a small number of ***** penguins and one king!

i would generally always advise against having dinner at the tango shows. it usually adds about 60 pesos to the cost of the show and you can get a great dinner at a nice restaurant in Buenos Aires for that price.

really, the only tango show with a good reputation for food is El Querandi, and thats because it used to be just a restaurant, and it still has a nice large menu, with much more choice than the limited menus at the other shows.

i always say - tango shows specialise in tango. restaurants in food. go to both separately and you will get far better quality and value for money.

if just going to a tango show alone, i would recommend piazolla tango or michelangelo tango for the big, slick production type shows, and taconeando or bar sur for the more intimate, close up shows. and maybe el viejo almacen for something inbetween, although it is full of tourists!

Some years ago the Piazzolla, was the vanguard, in tango club. Today not is it.

All want to go to Señor Tango, or to la Esquina Manzi.

The nocturnal show of tango in Señor Tango, is really good, something as well as a spectacle Broadway type.

The spectacle of the Esquina Homero Manzi is much more that a demonstration of the tango. It is the alive expression of the national culture, with the dancers and the musicians, it is an interesting place

I'm late to this site, however, we were at the Piazolla (my hero) Theater in Feb. & I thought it was excellent. It was certainly uncrowded. The food was so so but the dancing was devine & what else can you say about Piazolla music??? I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.l

Which show did you decide on? And also, which tour company are you using in Buenos Aires?

When is your cruise? We just booked and have piles of research to do.....

Thanks,

Carol

We will be in B.A. with our 10 and 11 year olds.

I've assumed that tango shows are for adults, and we were not planning on going to one. But just so that I don't miss out, are these shows appropriate at all for kids? For those of you that have been to the tango shows, have you seen any kids there?

My husband and I just returned from over a month in South America. Part of the trip was a Globus tour, and part of the trip was on our own. While in BA we went to the most AMAZING tango show/theatre. It is called Esquina Carlos Gardel (after the very famous tango singer). After a great deal of research it was found that this was in fact the best tango show/theatre in BA.

The website can be found at:

http://www.esquinacarlosgardel.com.ar/

Not only was the dancing breathtaking, but the food was divine. I suggest the white chocolate candy dessert (YUM). The place itself is very classy (as you can see by looking at the pictures on the website). Dinner starts at 8:30 and we did not leave the theatre untill after 12:00. No kids were there, but I would likely take mine as the tango in an key element in the Argentinian culture. One word of warning...because the place is so popular you will need to have reservations.

Canadian Red is right on the money with her recommendation for La Esquina de Carlos Gardel. My wife and I spent one week in BA last month and enjoyed tango shows almost nightly. The Carlos Gardel show was indeed the most

spectacular and enyoyable of the 4 shows we saw which included the Querandi and Piazzola shows. The Gardal show had the most musicians, wonderful dancers and the best vocalists of all. You just cannot go wrong with this show. The Querandi show was anemic in comparison. We never went to dinner shows since I'm convinced the meals at these shows cannot compare to those at the many excellent restaurants we sampled. All the red and white wine you can drink is also included in the price of the show without dinner. A final recommendation, the best spot for a late night tango and snacks is the basement at the Cafe Tortini - the show which changes throughout the week is only $10 pp US - can get very crowded and intimate but a lot of fun, like being in a small Paris bistro. A true party of the senses.

My wife and I will be going back next year for a BA to Rio cruise with Oceania

and will definitely go back to Gaurdel and Tortoni.

Cruisepsycho,

We also are sailing with Oceania but in January of this year.

When you go to the Tango show without dinner, do you have dinner before or after the show? This is what we are thinking of doing as well. When you go to the Tortini, do you eat there or just enjoy the dancing?

Thanks

Canadian Red -- Cruisepsycho,

We are also thinking about the Gardel show. Can you tell me what the show cost (without dinner) and did you make your reservations in advance? And if so, who did you use to make your reservations?

Also can you tell me how close the theatre is to the Claridge Hotel and was transportation included with the price of the show.

Many thanks.

Azcruises - Visit the Gardel website at

http://www.esquinacarlosgardel.com.ar/

I think you can make reservations online - but I think you can also make them through the concierge at the Claridge. You can email the concierge at

conserjeria@claridge.com.ar

I would think our TA's could make the reservations also.

Francine,

We will be staying at the Claridge at the end of Feb. prior to our Infinity cruise. As you can tell, we are in the process of making decisions regarding shore excursions, tango shows, etc. Half the fun of any trip is the planning & anticipation.

I hope you have a wonderful cruise.
