If that's the case, it seems like his way of doing this was very cruel to his family.  They will forever worry and wonder.

 

It would have been much more considerate to do this in a way where they knew what became of him, and had closure.

I agree. This will be unending torture for the family, far worse than when a family member passes away.

Oh dear what a tragedy that is. The possibility that he took matters in his own hands can very well be true. Having no closer makes the loss, the mourning even harder to cope with.
