wrg Posted May 16 #1 Share Posted May 16 Hi all, We are sailing on RCCL and would like to have a casual lunch in port. Any suggestions? We are open catching an Uber but hope there is somewhere in port or close by. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

For some genuine Puerto Rican food a short walk from the pier try Cafe Manolin . It's about as casual and unpretentious as you can get... similar to a small diner or luncheonette in the states. It closes early...about 3:30 or 4 . Edited May 16 by njhorseman
BklynBoy8 Posted May 16 #3 Share Posted May 16 Barrachina's restaurant in Old San Juan is the location of the original Pina Colada. They have a small restaurant we enjoyed once for lunch.

FWIW, an unprovable and disputed claim . Two different bartenders at the Caribe Hilton claimed to have invented the Pina Colada almost a decade before it was served at Barrachina. BklynBoy8 Posted May 18 #6 Share Posted May 18 (edited) Barrachina Restaurant Old San Juan was born following a long family tradition in the culinary arts. Barrachina Restaurant Old San Juan was recognized as the king of “Paella”, also a traditional Spanish bartender Don Ramon Portas Mingot in 1963 created what became the world's famous drink: the Piña Colada. Ramón 'Monchito' Marrero Pérez claims to have first made it at the Caribe Hilton Hotel's Beachcomber Bar in San Juan on 15th August 1952 (the Caribe Hilton say 1954), using the then newly available Coco López cream of coconut. Matter of opinion... a claim...to research.... Edited May 18 by BklynBoy8

Another vote for Manolin, but also consider https://restauranteraices.com/?page_id=112 Both are gentle on one’s lunch budget, but the food is ethnic and very good. Not fine dining, but still nice places. Both wil not disappoint
Rare peanutzmom Posted June 13 #8 Share Posted June 13 We were there last week, and Barrachina had an hour long wait as soon as it opened. It seems inundated with tourists. A couple of local shopkeepers nearby said the food wasn’t all that great and definitely not worth the wait. We wandered around and found Puerto Criollo. I think it’s probably a little more touristy than local, but the food was delicious and the service was great!
Bertaelflamingo Posted June 19 #9 Share Posted June 19 Last week, we ate at Barrachina and were not impressed. The food was just OK. I wish we had gone back to Manolin. Love the food there!
tallyho8 Posted June 19 #10 Share Posted June 19 I have enjoyed Barrachina's very much over the years and they were never too crowded when I went there. However, the last time I went there a few months ago, they had advertised in the cruise ships daily paper and when we got there it was too crowded to wait. Now, if you are on the first cruise ship to dock there you better hurray and get there before the crowd.
