Why is Oceania pronounced Oceana rather than Oceania?

Could not agree more, it is a constant source of amusement to us as New Zealanders when boarding an O cruise to hear that the i is still missing.  I’m surprised there hasn’t been a “Letter Overboard!” alert before now….

This has been discussed here numerous times over the years.

Reportedly Oceania's founder, FDR wanted to name it Oceana, but because there was a cruise ship with that name he added the "i" and it became Oceania. However he pronounced it as if the "i" were not there so that became the accepted pronunciation.

Personally I always pronounce it with the "i" .

My pronunciation depends on how many glasses of wine I have had when asked to pronounce it for the inquiring folks.

Best answer.  I use the "i" and my husband doesn't.  We still know what we're discussing.  😐
