Living In Halifax....

Okay, so here's a few questions to finish off my planning. Today I just had a friend that told me that the coastline beyond Halifax...towards Peggy's Cove is very beautiful. He said that Halifax is nice but that he would suggest getting out of Halifax for a little bit even if it did not mean going to Peggy's Cove. So...here's another question! :) Are there any other towns closer that give a little charm and a little taste of what Peggy's Cove is like without the long travel distance? I'm assuming Peggy's is about a 45 min. drive. So...is there anything that is around 15 min? Maybe somewhere with a lighthouse as well? I think the walking tour will really turn into a "FRED tour" to minimize some of the walking....and yes....with the Citadel added to the mix. I think we will concentrate on Citadel, Maritime Museum, a brewery tour, lunch and then other sites that we prioritize from the walking tour. If we can do a two hour jaunt to a town that is closer it would leave more of the day to do our Halifax sightseeing. Then we might add in a few more things...like the cemetary, old churches...maybe some other excursion? So...is this a good idea? Should we try to keep Peggy's Cove in the tour? Shopping will not, as it turns out, be such a priority with our group which will save a bit of time for other things. We will be going on to Saint John as our next port...and I wonder if we should shift coastal sightseeing to that port? Maybe the coastline is similar?

 

I think I'm getting our Halifax itinierary narrowed down to just the things we would like to concentrate on. Still just riding the fence on Peggy's Cove and wondering if an alternative exists that would give us the best mix. Thank you again for all the advice!

Hi Rick, I have been lurking here getting your great advice. I am coming to Halifax on 10/23, we plan to use the FRED bus (glad it is still in operation). My question for you, since the Fairview Lawn Cemetery is not on the FRED route, how much would you estimate a taxi would cost to go from the ship to the cemetery and then get another back to a FRED stop and pick up the bus?

Is this workable, are there taxis available at the ship and then again at the cemetery. I don't think I would want to have one wait, (lots of money??) but would need something to get back to the closest FRED. Any help you can give me would be great.

I don't take that many taxis myself, so here's a link to one of the local cab companies. They have their rates listed. And yes there are lots of taxi's down around the cruise dock. You may want to contact the taxi company for more information.

I recently received a wonderful book from Halifax Visitor Guide and it lists the walking tour with a map, and many beautiful pictures. I don't mean to intrude, but I was trolling around and thought I'd help you out, as I am from Halifax also. Just a few blocks away from the dock is a Farmer's Market, in the Keith's Brewery building on Lower Water Street, next to the new Courtyard Marriott. You can get just about everything there and it's a wonderful old building. Here's a website to take a look at:

In another year or so, it will be relocated to Pier 20 which is right at the cruise dock and will be open 7-days a week. Hope this helps out!

I don't know if they pick up at the cruise terminal but Alamo and National have a location at the Westin hotel which is very close to the Cruise terminal; it would be about a 5 minute walk and is easy to find. Also, Hertz has a location at the train station which is attached to the Westin.

So now I have another question (is everyone surprised??)

 

If we were going to walk up Cogswell and then up Windsor to the Cemetary (3 miles) ..... will there be sidewalks and is this a safe area to walk in the daytime.

 

The reason I ask is that we walk 3 miles once a day (twice a day on the weekends) so the walking distance is not a problem.

 

Obviously I don't know the area. If walking is not an option, due to poor road conditions or a safety issue...we will just grab a cab. But hubby would love to "kill 2 birds with one stone" . Get to visit the cemetary and get the walking in at the same time.

During the day time you would be OK. I can't say with 100% certainty but there should be sidewalks the whole way. It is a bit of a walk as long as you are up for it. The walk up the Cogswell until you get the the Halifax commons (park/greenspace) is all uphill.

Unfortunately, FRED doesn't stop anywhere near Fairview Cemetery, as it's stops are contained to the downtown area, the furthest point being Citadel Hill.

 

I'm not sure how much a taxi would cost, but it's a viable option to taking a tour.

We reserved space for our family of five with Jonathan Duru from Your Cab (www.yourcab.ca). He met us right at the terminal and drove out to Peggy's Cove via some of the less-traveled roads. It was about three hours total, with 45 minutes at Peggy's Cove, and Jonathan dropped us off in downtown Halifax so we could do some exploring. Jonathan gave us a great tour.

He charged us $39 pp. Since there were only 5 of us we used a minivan, but his website says he has vehicles for 2 to 15 passengers. We met his partner who runs Aberdeen Tours, and she was driving a van for a larger group.
