Islandbuoy Posted November 21, 2006 #26 Share Posted November 21, 2006 For many there are certain aspects of their travel that are a "tradition". I'm sure we all have them in some form or another. I recall being on the Constellation this fall and all the Canadians having to "get a Tim Horton's". Shrimp Cocktail is this for some people. Frankly with the low price of imported shrimp Carnival Corp. shouldn't be so cheap. My personal tradition is the escargot!!!
JohnR49er Posted November 21, 2006 #27 Share Posted November 21, 2006 The "shrimp" fans probably requested the mac and cheese, meatloaf, and spaghetti and meatballs even though they could always get those dinners at home.
Sea King Posted November 21, 2006 #28 Share Posted November 21, 2006 IMHO, this should be the straw that breaks the camel's back:eek: no shrimp cocktail every night can you imagine this especially after the post(s) about having to pay for drinks at the Captain's Welcome Aboard:rolleyes: what's the next cutback? a limit of 25 lobster tails per person; 10 caviars at one sitting; 12 ice cream cones at lunch; maybe it's one lunch at lunch:eek: this is horrible this is beyond acceptable how about a mass mailing to Seattle before day's end threatening to picket the dining room with signs that read, "we want shrimp; we want shrimp"! let's make the signs instead of the model ships! that should do it and once we finish picketing the dining room, let's head to Pinnacle and take care of them:D
AAAAmerican Posted November 21, 2006 #29 Share Posted November 21, 2006 Doesn't anyone read and/or listen to the news? Shrimp farming and farms were effected as well still are in Thailand, India, Sri Lanka etc... The big earthquake then Tidal Wave that made the loss of Hundreds of Thousands of souls also wrecked the industry......still has many effects. Don't you think the Cruise Lines want more litigation? The farms in S.E. Asia are and have been adding many chemicals, bacteriacides, etc... etc... so as they can try to raise the brine again. Do you want to Ingest that with your Tiger Shrimp and other Shrimp? A good refference source is asking your County/Parish (LA) Agent and/or State Health Offices... The S. American/C. American Shrimp farms are fine and they are the ones which made the price of shrimp come to modest levels from before.. Does anyone remember the price of Shrimp before they started having Shrimp Farms for the Culinary Industry and eateries? There was no such thing as the All you Can Eat Shrimp.. Howard Johnsons ^----^ did that with there Fish Nights.. <:><~~ When are Fish Farms going to be done now more as the Sea is running out of fish. Will HAL start Fish Farming ? Not just Serving CoHo ya know...
Bases5 Posted November 21, 2006 #30 Share Posted November 21, 2006 Its not a big deal to us, We eat fresh shrimp weekly, But it shouldn't be a issue for Hal to fill the request since it is on there every day room service menu?
sail7seas Posted November 21, 2006 #31 Share Posted November 21, 2006 The shrimp on the room service menu are very small, tiny salad shrimp. While they call it a shrimp cocktail it is not what most of us think of when we think 'shrimp cocktail.'
peaches from georgia Posted November 21, 2006 #32 Share Posted November 21, 2006 You're so right. Calling those tiny tasteless salad shrimp a shrimp cocktail on the room service menu really breaks all the "truth in advertising" laws of the high seas. And if there aren't any there should be. :D

twinkletoes4445 Posted November 22, 2006 #34 Share Posted November 22, 2006 I love shrimp cocktail, but as many of the previous posters have stated...I can have that at home. There's just too many other things I'd like to try that wouldn't normally try at home. However, if they offered it, I'd probably have it once (while on the cruise). babyher Posted November 22, 2006 #35 Share Posted November 22, 2006 I don't recall many of the 'no shrimp cocktails' posts lately. But, honestly..... Do you have a BJ's, a Costco, a grocery store near you? Buy a bag of shrimp. Costs about $12. Defrost it. Buy a bottle of cocktail sauce. Costs about $1.19. Put the shrimp on some shredded lettuce. Serve with cocktail sauce and a piece of lemon. Voila.....you've got a shrimp cocktail. I don't get it. What is the big deal? I like shrimp okay. Take it or leave it but it is such an ordinary thing that any of us can provide it for ourselves for small amount of money and zero cooking skills. Sure....you have the option of dropping your peppercorns and bay leaf in barely boiling water and cleaning and cooking and chilling your own shrimp but it isn't necessary. This is exactly what we do all the time Sail, Get a nice big bag of shrimp , You don't even have to boil it, just defrost it, open a jar of coctail sauce We do this very often when we entertain, or on a holiday , and like you said it is not that expensive. Thats why shrimp coctail isn't that big of a deal to us when we go out.
