Straights attending FOD meetings

Would you consider the singles get togethers a FOB meeting.

No. They are a singles get together - sexuality isn't mentioned. It might be fairer to ask would we, as a couple, attend the singles meeting. The answer would be no, but if we were passing and saw someone we knew we might stop to talk.

Would a "Gay/Lesbian" attend those

If they wanted to.

I figured it was only a matter of time until something simple, casual and fun would be turned into something complicated and conditional.

Is the Friends of Dorothy Meeting an official "meeting"? I dont think there is a guidebook of rules written anywhere. In fact, on our recent Celebrity cruise on the Century, the Daily listed the event as "Friends of Dorothy Gathering".

It was in the disco and paired with "Diva Night". I dont think any exclusivity was intended by the ship's social staff or those of us in attendance. There were many people there and although security was at the door, they were checking IDs for legal age. They werent checking for gay cards.

And Ivan, about being fabulous: the DJ on that ship kept asking us what music to play each night we were in the disco. (affirming our fabulousness!) We did our best to fill the dancefloor for him.

Derf, youre head is in the right place; I hope you dont feel a need to defend yourself. The world needs alot more people like you. ..>>jack

Jack, just wanted to confirm your Fabulousness... we used the FOD/Diva

gathering as an excuse to drag ourselves out of the casino and up to the disco... and found the choice of music....fabulous. We had a great time dancing.

Now as to the pairing of Diva night with the FOD gathering...Someone knows what time it is....

Etoile,

On each of our last 15 cruises, the FOD (or whatever they chose to call it) was hosted by a member of the Cruise Directors staff. Ninety-nine percent of the time they were str8 women who were very outgoing and had a fun time hosting the gig. On our last Princess 30 day cruise there were 6 FOD meetings and most were hosted by one of the dancers (he was gay) but it was on the Pacific Princess and the cast does double duty as part of the CD staff.

Jack: How was the Century? It''s on my wish-list?

Aerrobear: That's interesting. I have never been to a FOD that was actually attended by a member of the staff. Like Etoile, my experience has been that they designate a place and whoever shows up is meant to introduce themselves and facilitate their own get-together. Which line do you sail predominantly that you have been having such facilitation? We've only been on RCL and Celebrity.

Way back in the seperatist '80s, I, a pro-feminist male, was offended by the existence of "womyn-only" spaces. But, older and, I hope, wiser, I now see their point. Men rule the world. Many oppress women. Even more Just Don't Get It. So if a group of women want to carve out a space just for themselves, that's their right. Even in these much more relaxed times, if there were an onboard meeting for "women travelers," I'd never think of showing up.

Hey, I'm about as out and at ease with myself as you can get, but I do find myself behaving somewhat differently in all-queer groups than mixed groups. And, while I like and relate well to many hets (and have very limited interest in going on an all-gay cruise), if I want to spend a small chunk of my time in a mostly-het situation hanging out in an all-queer ambiance, I view that as my..um, right.

We had a thread about this a while back. There was discussion about whether men should be allowed on Olivia cruises, and whether gay people should want to go on an all-gay cruise (I think the phrase "gay ghetto" was used). It became a very heated thread so I don't care to bump it, but it certainly had some interesting ideas.

So since FOD meetings generally don't involve having sex (I assume this since I've only been on one cruise and it was an RSVP charter), I welcome anyone who wants to participate. :)

I have been on straight cruises and on an RSVP cruise, and I can definitely tell you that there is a LOT more sexual electricity in the air on RSVP charters. ;)

Also, I see you are going on the QM2 trip with them! Color me jealous! I was working for them as an interpreter, they usually contact us a couple of months in advance, so I am still hoping for a call for that sailing! :D

Well I have to get out my wikipedia. What is a Diva

A diva is a female opera singer, but now the term also refers to a popular female performer of non-operatic works.

from

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diva

So what is a "Diva Night"?

Diva Night is when the disco plays lots of music by those popular female performers. Singers like Cher, Mariah Carey, Gloria Gaynor, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross...

Wow, Aaerobear, that's awesome! I would also like to know what line this is on...do you usually sail Princess? On my recent Celebrity cruise, the CC gathering was started by the CD himself and then he was replaced by a member of his staff later on...but at the FOD meetings, like Schplinky said, the only crew member there was the bartender and we socialized amongst ourselves!

No, it was this one: Are gay men welcomed on Olivia Cruises?

Please please please don't post to it, though...there were a lot of angry words in that thread and it's better if it stays gone!

Send a message to Bill! :D His e-mail address is on the "ASL Events" page here: http://www.rsvpvacations.com/asl-events.php

Tell him you want Meredith back on board as the interpreter, you heard she was great and you want to see her working. :o

I am pretty sure the RSVP trip to Alaska was the best cruise I will ever take...I have been on two others and they were nowhere near as much fun! Relaxing yes, interesting yes, enjoyable yes...but nowhere near as fun!

On many cruises together, where we have attended a FOD party, our friend Ted said, " Patti, if all of our straight friends attend the FOD party, then it's not a FOD party anymore". :D

And he does have a point, I guess. We just like to go to a party with nice people on a cruise. I have never felt unwelcome, but I think I also try not to be intrusive or disruptive. (If Ted is reading this, he will probably disagree, LOL:D) I guess what I am trying to say, is that I appreciate the inclusion, instead of exclusion. :)

Although weve only been on one Princess cruise, our experience was the same. The meeting was hosted by a member of the social staff and they poured a round of champagne for everyone. Once things got going, the host left us on our own. It was a nice touch and Ive heard from others that its normal for Princess to host the meetings. Aaron would be happy to sail Princess exclusively ..>>jack

(Sorry about the double post. My browser got hung up and I didnt notice until it was too late to delete .."of all the things Ive lost I miss my mind the most!")

Anyway, about FOD meetings being hosted; On Carnival Destiny in September, one of the meetings was held in the martini bar. The bartender was a sweet girl named Diana, from Peru. We told her we were there for the FOD meeting...she continued to pour drinks and converse with the maybe 15 of us in attendance. She was fun!

About an hour later she said, "is Dorothy here yet??" We laughed and explained what it all meant.

Referring to Derf's original post about the orientation of the host, The point Im making is that in contrast to Princess, on this Carnival ship, the bartender didnt even know the event was being held in her space. .>>jack

My partner and I did on our Grand Princess cruise. I figured technically we're single, at least according to the government, plus they were serving free drinks. We met two very nice straight women at the party and let them know that we were a couple. They ended up coincidentally going on every excursion with us and joining us for cocktails before dinner and then dinner on the second formal night. A man one of them had also met at the party sent over a bottle of champagne.

It's OK. You can say it! We are totally fabulous!! Even some of our churches in San Antonio are saying now, "God knows you're fabulous!" I think all fabulous people should feel welcome at a Friends of Dorothy meeting. The emphasis is on the "Friends" and not which specific alphabetical category you may place yourself in.

Ivan

LOL, your remind me of one of my college friends who played my father in "The Fanstasticks". He use to call me "The Lovely and Tallented, Miss Suzanne."

I am 99% he is gay, though he wasn't totally "out" in college, .... well it was a small Jesuit school...

It was so funny because, he started dropping the "Miss Suzanne" part and started just calling me "Lovely and Talented".

I met some really nice guys on the Mercury at the "Broadway Name that Tune" contest. One of the guys was really into Community Theatre, and had just finished playing "Daddy Warbucks" in Annie. His partner had broken his leg in Cabo, had to have emergency surgery and they both had to fly to catch up with the ship. I think I like them best because with all that they were still having a great time on the cruise.

Diva's Divas Divas, it seemed like somewhere in the 80's that title started to be applied to any great female singer, no matter what her genre, and then in the 90's Elton John.:).
