mamaofami Posted February 23, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 23, 2007 By far, the most interesting excursion I had a few years ago was the tour of the kitchen on one of the HAL ships. It's amazing to see it, to realize how many meals are cooked there every day, and to see how spotless it is kept. Just thinking about the recipe for the bread pudding and how it's baked and available every day sets my mind racing. What an incredible operation to feed so many people every day. There was a tour of the kitchen available on the Noordam. Check the daily activvities and make this a must see. You'll be surprised.
San Diego Cruzer Posted February 23, 2007 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2007 Carol - I agree. We went on the Oosterdam kitchen tour in January and loved it. This was the 1st cruise that we had the opportunity to do this. It is amazing to see how everything works.
Himself Posted February 23, 2007 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2007 I went on a tour of the Statendam kitchen in November of 1997 and enjoyed it very much. (I put 15 pounds on just watching them prepare the food!)

Schplinky Posted February 23, 2007 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2007 Here are the handouts from our kitchen tour on Westerdam. It was truly interesting. http://schplinky.smugmug.com/gallery/2418958#127067009-L-LB you advance from picture to picture via the arrows at the top
LHC Posted February 23, 2007 #6 Share Posted February 23, 2007 DD and I had a culinary class ruined by some poor paperwork on Hals part, so to make it up last December our wait staff and friends took us on a tour of the kitchens for the Pinnacle and Main Dining areas. It was wonderfully slow paced. At each station we spent time speaking with the staff on their training, their duties, their length of stays on the ship, their families, looking at pictures of family, and learning about all the hard work that takes place to spoil us "cruisers". I enjoyed it greatly and when I sat down that evening to enjoy another wonderful meal, said a prayer for all those who worked hard, all day to see to my needs. Capital Cruiser Posted February 23, 2007 #7 Share Posted February 23, 2007 Schplinky, Was the kitchen tour "self-guided" (i.e., you had to use the handouts to find your way around), or was there a guide as well? I am really hoping to do this tour on the Veendam in a few weeks. Thanks. PS - I enjoyed your detailed review of the Westerdam a short while ago.
