NCL Mastercard FAQ

I was under the impression that I had to book before January 31, 2010 but could redeem before final payment was due.

I just picked up my certs... $1000 worth and they are expired. I may have to cancel our NCL Jade Cruise out of Barcelona this summer as I don't think I can afford it without the $1000. Can someone suggest a cheaper line?

Any advice?

Thanks,

You should be OK. My certificates have an expiration date of Jan. 31 also. But I booked before Jan. 31. Send an email to cashiers@ncl.com and include your booking information including booking number and sail date plus the certificate numbers and amounts. Do it now as it takes a while for them to get back to you. If you booked through NCL you should be able to view your booking info. and see when they deduct the certificates. If you booked through a TA they will have to check to see when the certificates are applied. Good luck and let us know how it works.

They are not honoring the certs.

This is what I am being told

"Unfortunately the deadline for booking your cruise and the application of these certificates was 1/31/2010."

However.. this is what it says on their website:

What happens to the Compass Reward points that I have already earned?

You will receive Compass Reward Certificates by February, 2009, based on your Compass Rewards point balance on December 31, 2008. You may redeem these certificates for either a cruise discount or stateroom upgrade as you have done in the past. Simply book your cruise before the certificates expire; your travel date may occur after the expiration date but before January 31, 2011.

What to do? '

Anyone have any advice?

Thanks

Did you book by Jan. 31, 2010? That is the important date here. If you didn't, you're out of luck. If you did they should still honor them.

I am sorry i have no advice.

I also feel very sad for you that you lost your $1000 certs.

I found NCL to be very clear that the certificates expired on 1/31 and had to be redeemed/applied/submitted whatever you want to call it, by that date.

Too bad you didnt also find this thread sooner as we have been discussing getting our certs in before the 1/31 deadline.

I wish you luck.

Like many of you, I've been researching options to the BoA card. Someone several pages back suggested the Capt. One Ultra Professional

card. Here is what I found. You do get 2% on all purchases. It's not all it's cracked up to be (imagine that!). Yes, you can receive credit on any travel purchase, HOWEVER, you must pay for it IN FULL w/ miles. ie. if you pay $1200 for a cruise you must have 120,000 miles to cover the purchase. You cannot ask for a $500 (or whatever) credit toward that purchase by redeeming 50,000 miles.

Yes, you can get a statement crtedit or check but it is at 1/2% rate

I do not know if other amounts are available but their site allows to request a check/credit of $100 for 20,000 points!

At least w/ NCL's card you can use upwards of 10,000 points for cruise credit at a 1:1 ratio, and smaller amounts of points for OBC or casino credit at 1:1.

I purchased my cruise on 12/24/09... before 01/31/10. The certs were sitting on my desk for a while but when I read their FAQ and spoke to them in December before booking I was told that as long as I book before 1/31 i am fine.. nothing about redeeming certs by then. My final payment is not due until June 1st and of course I thought I had until then to apply certs.

I may be out of luck. I will most likely cancel my cruise as they will not bend the rules here.... but my attorney feels their website is indeed misleading and will send them a letter. What else can I do? Thing is.. I don't have to pay attorney fees so not worried about going this route.

If they won't redeem the certs I won't cruise NCL again.

Have you tried emailing like I mentioned earlier?

I agree with Disney..... direct interaction with NCL is necessary. When you say

"This is what I am being told...

"Unfortunately the deadline for booking your cruise and the application of these certificates was 1/31/2010.""

Who told you? Seems to me that if you can contact NCL, either via email at the above address or thru a customer service rep (keep going higher if you need to) , with the proper proof of booking, you should be fine.

However - there may be one more thing we are overlooking. What is the expiration date on the certificate? There were two different types of certificates issued, and it does make a difference as to which one you have.

Thanks Julie! It sounds like you're looking at this the same way I am. Maybe we should book a cruise together to discuss ;)

I just received a new card in the mail, informing me " ... we have closed your previous account number to protect the security of the account ... ". Unfortunately the flyer that came with it gives no information on the interest rate, if the switch is transparent, or other such background information. It does describe fraud protection and other benefits. The brochure looks like a sales pitch, but it appears I have no choice in the matter. The absence of an interest rate makes me suspicious.

Today I just received an automated telephone message informing me I must call today, accounting for my trip here to see what I can learn. My old card has remained active, but it sounds like it may not remain that way for long. Looks like I will give them a call.

Yeah, I'm one of those who missed the deadline too to use my $2000 worth of certs:-((( But it's my own fault. I had a year to book the cruise and use them, just like everyone else did too who got the certificates when the program ended. So I'm surely not going to blame NCL for my mistake like others seem to be doing.

The certificates clearly say on the back "Cruise must be booked and the certificate applied prior to the expiration date of this certificate" - which is 1/31/10.

All of the Final Certificates sent out last year had an expiration date of January 31, 2010. Not only was that in the letter I received with my certificates, but it was also on the certs themselves. It is true that you could book a cruise past 1/31/2010, but the certs also had to be applied by that date. I would certainly try sending NCL a letter, but unfortunately it's going to come down to whether or not someone is feeling generous.

Good Luck!

I notice that BoA allows you to transfer points between accts. if you have more than one. I put in some numbers to see what the cost was since the fine print says costs may apply and it showed $0 but I don't trust

BoA. Anybody else done this and actually gotten it for $0?

I've transferred points twice, between accounts and haven't had any cost/fee to do so. You can't transfer odd amounts of points, is the only drawback I've found.

The letter from BOA telling you that your cards are canceled has an email address with info about data compromise.

It's the P.S. on the back and it says...

To learn more about data compromise, please visit us at bankofamerica dot com/compinfo

Might answer some of the questions here for you.

  • 2 weeks later...

I called to redeem 2000 worldpoints for a Slot Tournament entry. It was a quick process, did'nt take more then 15-20 minutes. The number I called was 1-866-954-4077, thats the NCL redemption center. With such a high interest rate now, I won't be using that card anymore and just wanted to use up my old points. Miss the old program, that was the best.:(

I used my last $500 certificate about a week before 1/31/2010 and successfully applied it to a cruise on the Epic September 2010. I enjoyed this program a lot while it lasted, but I have now switched to a different credit card, and no longer use the BofA Norwegian card.

If a friend of mine has a certificate from when the points program switched over, can she still use it if she hasn't applied it to a cruise? Was there an expiration date? If so, has anyone tried to redeem it? Any replies are appreciated. Thanks!

There should be an expiration date on the certificate. If she received the coupon when the final certificates were send out (the number on it will have an FC at the end or beginning, I forget which one), those certificates had to be used by 1/31/2010.

Don't know what the expiration date is on others, but there should be an expiration date on the certificate.

I believe the "FC" final certificates were the last certificates to expire, and they expired (cruise had to be booked and certificate applied by) 1/31/2010. Do check the certificate though, and refer the actual expiration date on the certificate, just to make sure.

I have a dilemma and I really need some advice. It's a long, long story but here's the quick version:

- Booked 2 week cruise on NCL ship last November 29th out of Miami.

- Used $1500 worth of Compass Rewards coupons towards this cruise

- Drove all the way from TX to FL when we got a phone call saying the ship had broken down and the cruise was cancelled!!

- Got our $ back plus another % towards a future cruise - received both of these

- Asked travel agent (not NCL) about the $1500. He said he didn't know but thought they were probably linked to our booking number.

- Over the months, have called NCL and BofA no less than 10 times to try to get an answer about the $1500. Keep getting the runaround, different people, blah blah blah - different answers, noone knows, etc.

- Today I called the reservations dept at NCL. They said we've lost the $1500 bc the program has ended. I would understand this if WE had cancelled the cruise but THEY cancelled it b/c their ship broke down!! They DID say to book another cruise and then call back and they'd see what they could do!!

- We NEVER received any communication from NCL or BofA concerning those certificates - saying to rebook within a certain time or lose them, etc.

- I'm so mad!! Help! Anyone else have this experience? What happened? What would you do? Who would you call? Any ideas? Thanks so much!!

One piece of info was missing. Were you given the whole cruise fare back (Your money plus the certificates) or just your money? Or were you offered a free cruise of comparable value for another time? It makes a difference. And how much of a % off the next cruise did you receive?

It sounds like you need to go higher than the customer service reps in the NCL hierarchy.

But first, the best thing you could do at this point is to carefully read the fine print in your cruise contract and see just what you agreed to by buying your ticket. If you were to get an attorney involved, that's what he/she would probably do anyway. Maybe you have recourse, maybe not.

I can certainly understand your anger and frustration. I know I would be the same if it were me.

In reading your post again, you said that the reps offered to see what they could do if you booked another cruise..... did you try yet? If I were you, I'd try that route, but not book it online. Check to see what you want online and see how much it costs, then call and make sure you get a very nice cruise consultant (there are some MUCH nicer than others) and try to book the cruise that way. If anything can be done, it's more likely that they can do it. You're not likely to get anything online.

Post back and let us know how you make out!

Thanks so much for responding. No, we only got what we'd paid in cash back, not the amount of the certificates. I was hoping they WOULD pay us back the $$ from the certs to make rebooking easier but they didn't. They also gave us 40% in credits I think it was of the price of the cruise b/c of being inconvenienced from the cruise being cancelled.

I think I am going to do that - try to book a cruise using that 40% credit we have (I've verified that that is indeed there) as a deposit and then see if that man can indeed help us out.

I'll do it early next week and I'll post back. Thanks again!
