Thanks to both of you for your restaurant recommendations. Now how about things to do. I am still undecided. Are there any special things going on for Halloween, any special haunted houses? Fairs, Parades? Festivals?

(Dates are Sat 27 & Sun 28)

THANKS!

What kind of rate did you get?

The Marathon festivities also start that weekend.

BlueHerons - I started my working out and was able to run (wog) for a short time. I've been working out with a personal trainer and boy are my legs sore. I certainly won't be running any marathons this November.

I walk along the east river quite often. I've been seeing people training already for the marathon. Marathoners motivation levels amaze me.

Most of us just do it so we can party more! LOL!

Seriously, ran the NYC Half a couple of weeks ago and it was such a thrill running down Seventh Avenue through Times Square and seeing myself on that massive NASDAQ jumbotron! Had Beyonce blasting on my iPod! We finished downtown after a run down the West Side Highway.

Keep running and make sure you have proper shoes. If your shoes have more than 400 hundred miles on them, throw them away and get a new pair. Your shoes keep your joints from absorbing the shock from running.

Boy, I wish I could run again....I have disc degeneration disease (have had back surgery once already) and the specialist says no more running or hard impact sports. Running was great for me to keep those extra pounds off. Walking takes double the miles and time to achieve that!

Cot427 - I have no doubt you will find a way here. :p

Zone - when you and your wife and I finally meet, we can all be in pain together. Funny we all joined a gym at the same time.

BlueHerons - Really? Only 400 miles for sneakers? That's about 10 weeks for me or less. I walk so much. Maybe I should have sneakers for running and different sneakers for walking to and from work (3 miles each way) and walking the dog. I remember when a really good pair of sneakers cost $50 and that was considered expensvie.

Fitters - I hear walking is just as good for people, if not better. I'm really doing a wog right now (walk/jog). My walk is probably faster than my jog.

  • 2 months later...

Okay, I got back from my little mini trip. I'll give the good, the bad, and the ugly, like I always do.

I got there by Greyhound Bus. I'd rather walk, let's put it that way. We were supposed to leave PIT at 11:15, but we left at 11:50, but I figured they are always like that. The terminal in Pittsburgh was nice, but it was temporary, because they are redoing our old one.

We stopped near Harrisburg, but I slept the whole way to Harrisburg. It was about a 30 minute stop, it was very quick. Then, we stopped in Philadelphia. Now this is a really bad place. It was a fiasco. Our bus driver said our bus needed an inspection sticker, so we would have to take another bus to NYC. So they gave us a reboard number and we had to listen to it. Well, they called this one number, and then not ours. We asked the driver, and he didn't know. It was an hour fiasco, but we finally made it on the bus, right across from the bathroom. The Philly bus station is gross, dirty, and the workers are nasty. There was also a naked drunk man laying on the floor. The police guard there just stood over him, laughing not wanting to touch him. The paramedics finally came and took him. It was absurd.

We arrived at the Port Authority about 8:45, 45 minutes late. We grabbed a taxi and went up to 56th street, the Manhattan club.

It looks very nice outside, and the lobby is very nice. The staff in the guest relations are not that nice, but oh well. We dropped out bags off and went to breakfast at nearby Applejacks Diner.

BTW, it was raining that day, saturday, but we walked times square until about 12:30. We shopped, talked, saw, and ate. It was fun even in the rain. Then, we walked to Central Park, the rain let out a little. It started again, and we ate at the Park Diner next to the Park Central Hotel.

We had the tour at 2:00. I was used to them, and went in with an open mind. I was expecting the rooms to be fantastic. We got in, and started the tour. She gave us her speech and then showed us the rooms. She showed us a one bedroom, 2 baths (she pushed the 2 baths thing). It was just as nice as most of the hotels in NYC. I was not impressed. I came back, she told us the price for owning a week $48,000 plus maintience fee. WOW! No way, never, not for that room, it was not nice for that price. I said no, got my gift which was $150 gift card for dining.

We checked in at 4 and got our room on the 21 floor. It was not redone like the lower levels, but it was okay, other hotels in NYC are much nicer. the bathroom was dirty, cracked tile, peeling ceiling, dirty show. It had 1 queen bed and a pullout couch, 1 bath, small kitchen, 2 tvs.

The elevators were extremly slow. We waited 10 minutes on the checkout day.

Later that night, we ventured to TKTS and got Phantom tickets for 8:00. The show was really great, especially for a first timer. The Majestic Theater was okay, needed redone or something. the phantom was one of the best my aunt said, who seen the Phantom at least 5 times.

We ate dinner at Bond 45, because we tried to get in before the show at 5:30, but couldn't get in, so we ate at 10:45. They were pricey for what you get, but its NYC. I got veal, $26. They also had good cheesecake. The waitress was rude, catered to the men next to us.

There are a million people in Times square at night, i was amazied. Went to sleep and got up at 7:30. We ate at Brooklyn Diner, and it was very good. They have two locations, part of the Firemans Assosication.

We walked around for 5 minutes where they had a street closed to flea markets, it was very nice. Then, we took at taxi to Penn Station for our train home.

It was a lot better than Greyhound, althought it was delayed too in Philly.

A great trip, seen a lot. Any questions?

Did you go on a cruise also? Is this cruise related? :)

Thanks for the New York information. We have a cruise booked from there in April and now know that we will not try and do an exchange into Manhattan Club. Too many other options to waste an exchange week in a dirty hotel. Especially as we really would only use three to four days of that week. My sister and daughter would love to see Phamtom. Even though the trip was not cruise related, the info on New York was very helpful.

The discount is available at Playbill club. Its free to join and provides decent discounts. The discounts are less that TKTS- the place you stand in line for day of tickets but you don't have to line can order in advance and sometimes you can pick what you want.

I love that TKTS place, next time I will definetly get tickets from there for another show. I recommend it.

there is a second TKTS office by the South Street seaport(downtown by the wall street area). generally no lines and mostly the same tickets. There will be one opening in Brooklyn soon at Albee square.
