Just back from Volendam

... Regarding cabins being too hot ... if I discover such to be the case when I first get into my cabin I IMMEDIATELY report it to the front desk. If it's not taken care of before bed time -- and such was the case, once -- I take a blanket and a pillow and go to the Atrium, go up to the promenade deck, and stretch out on one of the couches across from the Front Desk (after telling them WHY I'm there). The one time I had to do this, my cabin's AC was fixed and working again before I had a chance to actually fall asleep (about 40 minutes).

LOVE IT! :D A "sleep-in" as a nonviolent protest - you go, Reverend!

Well, I understand. It is hard to sleep when one is hot. Not warm. Hot. We did report it twice and then when it went completly off...I went to the office. But near as I could tell....nothing was done. The AC did come back on....but it was still hot.

I did e-mail about the problem. I will also write. Because that ship comes so near to perfection that it is silly to not fix that problem even if they have to install new AC systems. Being comfortable in a cabin is a big, big deal.

The coolest spots on the ship to me were the Explorer's Lounge.....the Crow's Nest......and the Library. All were comfortable. The casino was not warm. Not cool so much either, but not uncomfortable. And I made donations on one unmentioned nickel slot machine. I did not win, but I did not lose much either. And I did get to play quite a bit so I felt that was entertainment. I am not much of a gambler. I just like to see the spins and enjoy playing the bonus games and such. And I had to work hard to get my little piggie some nights. The casino is small. But never crowded. The staff is excellent. And the casino bar serves mixed nuts...that include pecans, walnuts, cashews and such. Really tasty. I was surprised by little classy things like that...fancy nuts, not just peanuts over and over on the Volendam.

So they should...........GET THOSE AC UNITS FIXED PRONTO!!!!

I too was just on the Volendam. Our cabin was hot from day one. :( We complained over 8 times. They were never able to fix it.

We had a great time on our cruise doing the shore excursions and things on the ship but, the most undesirable time, dreaded time, and most miserable time, was when it was time to retire for the night.

They did give us a fan but it mostly just moved the hot air around. When they sent someone to check it, which they did this several times. They couldn't believe it would be 78 degrees. Come back and it would either be raised 2 degrees or drop 2 degrees. We would wake up sweating. Our beds were soaking wet, so were are clothes. At one time I told the lady that had come up to the cabin that we were going to camp out in the showroom with our pillows and blankets until they got it fixed! She asked that we please not do that. Of course I wouldn't, but I sure as heck felt like it! I would lay out on our balcony to sun, and it was cooler out there in the sun then in our cabin, NO JOKE!!!

I got a little chuckle as they sent chocolate candy as an apology. Two things that made me chuckle. Our names were on the outside of the envelope but the letter inside was addressed to another couple. The second was, by the time we had returned to our room, the chocolates were melted:eek: . Nice ideal had the room not been so hot.

We had brown water twice while on the ship. We just ran the water until it was clear both times. Our toilet would not flush when we got on the ship, we let them know. It started working after we had set sail, about an hour later. We later experienced the toilet not flushing again and they sent a maintenance guy who looked at it and fixed it.

I'm not happy with what happen, as we also spent quite a bit of money for this trip. But what can ya do. Complain and move on and enjoy your cruise.

Our room steward Indra was wonderful and understanding about changing sheets, etc. We felt bad as we were asking for ice, and needed more then normal wash clothes. We were taking several showers as I did not want to stink.

Our dining room waiters, Suko and Murdock were wonderful as well. Was a pleasure to meet them.

Hopefully next time, it won't be so hot and we will get better rest at night.

Sorry to hear about the a/c. Sure hope they get it fixed for our cruise a week from Saturday. I will do like Rev Neal and curl up accross the purser desk.

One more time did they have traditional dinning or any time you want or both??

Robb

The AYWD option on the Volendam starts with the Nov 13 cruise to Panama and back.

Just curious, what cabin or deck were you in? We are in a C cat cabin on the lower Promenade deck leaving on Nov. 23. Did you happen to know if that deck had AC problems as well?

We were on the Veranda deck 6 toward the aft of the ship. Not sure about rooms in that category, but I do know that others on our floor were also having problems. When we went down to the front desk...there were some pretty "heated" people there. (no pun intended). Not sure what decks they were on though.

The more reviews I read about this problem, the more concerned I get. Hopefully the CCers on the current sailing will come back and have good news to report. I'll be on the Dec 3rd sailing....here's hoping the A/C glitch is fixed by then.....or RevNeal's plan will be put to good use :) .

I realize there's nothing funny about this entire situation, and I feel so sorry about it, but I can't help but laugh at this.

Please forgive me; I hope you understand how the irony is striking.

It seems there have been reports of AC and plumbing problems on the S & R class ships going back for some time. I am sure "Seattle" is aware of it. The fact that they seem to think they can get away without fixing it is what bothers me. There have been many of these AC/plumbing complaints lately and no instance in which the AC has been actually fixed. As long as people continue to book and put up with it, there will probably be problems with the AC & plumbing. Sad.

Greg, you are priceless!!!!:D I'm not kidding when I say I would likely do something similar. Along with plumbing problems, a hot cabin is something can can "ruin" (if that's possible) a cruise. The fact is if I'm hot, I'm miserable.

I'm becoming increasingly concerned about these recent reports. In fact just last night I ordered the LLBean travel clock with the temp guage so I'll be armed with my own reading.

There's just no excuse for this. You can't put people in hot cabins in the Caribbean. Cancel my cruise if you must, but get it fixed.

They sure must have quite a stash of fans onboard because I'm reading everywhere "they gave us a fan".:)

Amber, good for you for making the best of it. I'm just glad you were able to enjoy yourselves in spite of your discomfort.

Thanks, Heather. And, I too, am miserable if I'm too hot. I can't sleep and have headaches if I can't get cool. Hence, I don't tolerate it. That's why I did what I did.

I am growing very concerned, too. I'm boarding the Volendam a week from tomorrow and these reports from her have me worried. I KNOW that AC can sometimes break down, but when it breaks down it should be corrected. Period.

I absolutely agree. I hope both of us have good luck on our upcoming cruises. There's another thread about problems on the Veendam which we'll be hopping on soon.

I'll look forward to the reports coming back over the next couple of weeks.

Have a wonderful cruise, Greg ... :)

I ordered one today, Heather! Thanks for the head's up on it.

RevNeal, I do hope you will have nothing but coolness to report when you get back. We board her the 23rd, and I am getting seriously worried about these reports of the heat.

I am so sorry for all who had to suffer (and I do mean SUFFER) their cabins being hot. I've been there, and I am NOT a happy cruiser when that happens. It's just ridiculous HAL did not maintain the a/c over the Alaska (or Baltic or whereever) season.
