It's a PITA to have only 1 mag strip card that opens the safe. So, if I took a card with a mag strip and cut it in half (say an expired credit card), would both halves work to access to the safe?

I have no idea but it's an excellent question. I don't know if the data encoded on the mag strip is distributed across the entire thing or if it's repeated many times.

 

I'm betting one of our intrepid members has an answer! C'mon kids!!! How about it!!!

Presumably each card would have different info on it, non? Or do you mean to cut one of your S&S cards in half?

 

Anyway, DH (an electrical engineer) thinks that the mag strips are set up like a bar code, so they likely need the entire horizontal length (but perhaps only half the vertical height?) to scan.

My S&S card didn't work on the safe, so when DH was on an excursion, I had to ask Carnival to send someone to open the safe. They did, and he told me to use my driver's license. It worked.

I tried that multiple card trick with the same bar code twice - once using my land-based casino cards (same name on both cards) and then last cruise using my room cards from HI Port of Miami. Neither worked!! I was shocked, as it was just a copy of the same card/roomkey. So maybe each card, even though it is a dup, is somehow coded just a bit differently. (figured we had 4 room keys from the HI - that would be 4 accesses to the safe for $, kid's iPods, etc.) Whichever room key I used for the initial slide was the ONLY key that would open the safe. Ended up throwing the rest out so we wouldn't get them confused. It was a pain trying to search down dh to get safe card when needed. But I love the idea of 1/2 a card - we are leaving next week - hope someone tries it beforehand!

Why not just leave the card in the cabin somewhere hidden? I highly doubt the stewards take the time to search the entire room for the possibility of a card there. We've hidden it in the Bible in the room in the past as well as in various other places in the room. Cuts down on either of us searching for the other to get into the safe.

That's what we do too. Just remember to put it in the same place each time so you don't have to search forever and ever (like we did last time). I can't imagine the room steward trying to get in there anyway.

Heheheee... one of the guys I met on the Conquest told me, or should I say admitted to me, that he was using his CURRENT S&S card to open the safe. Thought it would cut down on what he had to drag around with him... Well, being the considerate husband he decided to hide the key to the safe so his wife could use it if he wasn't around. Ooops... wifey was spending most of the day at the spa and the Admitter was locked out of his cabin! A kindly staff member rescued him before his lady might have found out.

 

Good intentions don't always turn out the way you expect... especially if you're overcome by crusin' fever!!!

That's exactly what we do too. We usually put it in a pocket of something hanging in the closet so it's close by.:D

On the Triumph last month I brought 2 of my replacement Player's Club cards from my local casino and was able to use the one card to lock the safe and the other to unlock without any problems. Perhaps some casinos store more info on the card than others but I know mine worked without any issues.

 

It was nice not having to hide a card or hunt down the other person to get access to the safe.

I did this last time - only the past card was from a different line and kept hidden in the cabin.

if you stay the night before the cruise in a hotel save one of the hotel room keys with the mag strip on the back.

 

we hid the motel key right on top of the safe. there was a lip on the top of the safe that hid the hotel card on under the bible.

After some internet research, I now know way more than I ever thought possible about how the magnetic strips on bank & credit cards work. And half a credit card wouldn't work for the safe.

 

Although, I like this idea about using a casino/player's club or hotel room key. We are staying in a hotel the night before, and presumably our hotel room keys should have the same info on them, right?

 

You know I'll be testing this out in February.

Since you need your photo ID like your Drivers License out in town, I use that and keep it with my S&S card.

We used our AAA card last time. Just put it in a pocket of something by the safe. It was SOOOOO much easier!!!!!

We just came back from a 7 day on Carnival Victory. I used our current sail and sign card and I'm glad I did - about 5 days into our cruise, the safe apparently cut a gouge into the data strip on the card and it stopped working. I went to the purser's desk, got a new S&S card and it worked just fine. If I'd used a credit card or license or something like that, not only would it have been damaged and need to be replaced (if it was something I still needed to use), but I also would have been locked out of my safe!! DON'T believe the card inside the safe that says if you use your S&S card, the safe and the card will stop working - it's NOT TRUE!!

I always take a Starbucks card that has been used up. So far, it's worked.

We use a gift card, like starbucks, or our Sooper Card (Card for our local grocery store) we keep it in the room in a placce that we both know where it is. Works like a charm.

Why don't you just put your valuables in the pocket and forget the safe altogether? If someone breaks into the cabin they'll never suspect you have anything of value if the safe's wide open, right?
