Here It Is Boys and Girls...New Dress Code

I never said it was "terrible". It is what it is, mass quantities. I will just not try to tell people it's anything more than what it is.. Applebees with fancy waiters. I will still go, I will still eat, I will still more than likely enjoy most of the food. Haute cuisine it is not. I will not gorge on multiple entrees, appetizers and desserts though, but that is for another thread. I have been pretty clear, if you take the time to read my posts about my opinion of the food, my choice of dining attire, and my reasons for approving of the new dress code. Any attempt to paint my reasoning or motives otherwise is doomed.

I guess some people don't understand casual. Casual is dressy shorts. Casual is wearing slacks and shirt without a tie and jacket. Which is what is now allowed on formal nights.

I think the problem here is some people think casual and slob is one and the same:rolleyes:

Casual is some peoples way of life. Casual people take baths. Casual people wear the proper shoes. Casual people wear diamonds. Casual people use silverware. Casual people wash their hands. Casual people have college degrees. Casual people even comb their hair.........heck they even have manners......

:) Can't argue that at all Kurb.

My only personal thoughts on shorts...even 'nice' ones, are that they are casual...never dressy. You got a man's hairly legs sticking out of them....dressiness goes down the toilet :p

Now, I enjoy men's legs ;) so there is nothing wrong with seeing them, I just wouldn't call it dressy...but again, you don't need to be dressy on a casual night.

If men are coming in the dining room with nice shorts then I don't see an issue.....I do think though that all the younger men out there that have none of these in their wardrobe won't go out and buy any.

I wonder if CCL will allow, say...cargos shorts in the dining room, just because they are long.

To me this wouldn't be casual...it's recreational (??) (don't want to use the word sloppy because that wouldn't be accurate)

Sorry, I don't care how "buff" and "manly" some of you guys may think you are, but your so-called "manpris" just look too sloppy for the dining room.

Personally, I think capris on most women are terrible too. I know, I know, most women love them...but I would never wear them. It's all a matter of opinion...and we know everyone has one. :)

From What NOT To Wear:

To look your best take your body type into consideration before choosing to wear the latest fashion. You will appear slimmer and more fashionable if you wear clothing that suits your body type. Lets look at cropped pants:

Cropped pants (pedal pushers, Capri, clam diggers) end usually somewhere in-between the knee and the ankle, What they do:

* Make you look shorter

* Make your hips look larger

* Your legs look shorter

* Your ankles thicker

Or [gasp] a woman's hairy legs sticking out of them! Unfortunately, shorts and/or hairy legs sticking out of them are not unique or confined to only men.

And I for one, do not particularly enjoy the female version. I would also venture to say that I am not alone in this regard! :o

There seems to be a fair number of people who are mad that they are changing the dress code for Formal Night. Not true. There is no more Formal Night. They have reclassified that night and chosen the term of Cruise Elegant simply because they know the dress code is not formal. There is no more Formal Night to argue about. It's gone. Let's move on. I now feel that if I wear the same slacks and button down type clothing I wear on the "casual nights" I should meet the dress code for all nights. This means less luggage, which is fine by me. If I have the need to wear my tux I have a couple meetings a month of groups I belong to where a tux is required. I can also go to one of several charity events a year where a tux is required. If it is just the dressing up aspect you miss, join some groups or go to some charity events. Many of those are Black Tie and every one will be dressed the same. As far as the Elegant Nights goes, you can still dress up and not feel out of place. I actually find it amusing that people know what percentage of people in the dining room are dressed appropriately. I have no idea what anybody else was wearing on my cruise! Well that's not entirely true! I did happen to see a young man in shorts being turned away and that caught my attention because after all the complaining on this board I thought no body ever got turned away! But if we take another cruise from our home port I will probably take a tux, but I'm not going to pack it for the airlines type cruises. And if it's any consolation, I won't notice your tux or fancy dress and you can feel free not to notice my slacks.

I was watching the Carnival promotional DVD and noticed how the people are dressed. Since this portrays the line in an ideal light, perhaps it's a clue as to their expectations on such matters ? The men' shirts had collars with the exceptions of pool area, track, and gym. I saw a great deal of gentlemen in dark coats. My conjecture is that Carnival expects folks to dress up a bit in the evenings , not only for the traditional dining, but the casino, shows, and lounges. On the DVD the men were even wearing button down shirts and trousers in the Lido buffet line.

If one is to read into the Carnival promotional DVD, then rustic jeans, shorts, caps, T-shirts and so on after 6 is most definitely faux pas....even if Carnival doesn't strictly enforce such etiquette.

My guess is that dress codes are the bare minimum of accepted behavior and in no way are to taken as the social norm. For example, just becouse ball caps are not explicitly forbidden, doesn't make them correct.

True - the point is that FORMAL night is history. People long debated what constituted formal, now they can do the same for ELEGANT.

I, for one, will still consider ELEGANT night as a chance to wear my Tux (I don't wear it anywhere else) on cruises of 7+ nights. On 3-5 night sailings, I will likely just be ELEGANT... hmmm, is it OK for a GUY to be ELEGANT???

LOL

"elegant

adj

Definition: beautiful, tasteful

Antonyms: crude, inelegant, rough, ugly, unfashionable, unrefined, unsophisticated, untasteful"

UH-OH... I see some problems with the antonyms. We have been around long enough to know that a fair % of people fit squarely into that category.

;) :D

No flames, please - JUST IN FUN!!!

Just what I think of, after I comb my chest hair and put on my elegant dress shirt.

"Beautiful and tasteful". :p

Whether or not you can wear jeans on Formal night is irrelevant. As others have mentioned, Formal night is toast. It doesn't exist anymore.

As for the illusion cruise lines (not just Carnival) sell, that is exactly what it is. What they show in the commercials, brochures, and DVDs is not reality.

I recommend anyone with an interest in how cruise lines operate to read $elling the $ea by Bob Dickinson.

Oh I am almost positive they will allow cargo shorts. They are considered casual. Recreational shorts? That's a new one on me lol! They listed what kind of shorts they don't want.

People are making a mountain out of a mohill on this subject. It makes me laugh!!!

The insults only show peoples true personalities. I think it is great that Carnival is listening to what people want. That just shows great business sense to me. All people are not created equal and thank god for that:D

You should go over and visit the fashion board it will crack you up:p

People can wear their suits and tux's or they can opt for nice slacks and dress shirt on cruise elegant night.

Cruise casual will be no different then it was before except for maybe some will decide to wear shorts.

I believe you will still have to look presentable:)

Elegant night on a cruise ship.....you have to be joking.....There isnt one thing on a cruise ship that is elegant.....Its a floating hotel people........

Previous poster was correct: Applebees with dressed up wait staff...(spartygrad95, I think said it)

Half of the help/staff doesnt even speak english. They dont even bother to train them in proper ettiquette......put a knife across the top of your plate (its the signal for a waiter to remove the plate) and see what they do.....nada, zilch, nothing.......

I will wear my suit on Elegant night and be OK with it......I will wear slacks at dinner.....if you dont.....it is fine with me.....I will speak to you....treat you with respect.....converse with you.......

In my opinion you wont see elegance on any cruise ship........Carnival, RCCL, Norwegian, Princess, yada yada yada........Maybe the QEII.

We always "went with the flow" and followed the dining room rules, but I for one am happy with the new changes regarding the dress code. Mainly because dressing up for formal night (or 2) is a real hassle. First there is the packing issue. Whether you drive or fly to port, there is a lot of extra luggage to pack formal clothes for 2-6 people. And now with the extra luggage fee (is it $75 each way??) this just adds to the problem.

I also found it a dreaded hassle to dress for formal night, especially on port days. Just what we want to do - rush back to port, put on pantyhose and fancy clothes ... ugghh ... our whole family is in a rotten mood by the time we would get to dinner.

And one should not equate the absence of formal attire as "dumbing down" or taking away from the cruise experience. For me, it will allow me to spend more time enjoying my cruise (at port, in the spa, by the pool) and not so much time primping in front of the mirror. However, I know there are some cruisers who find the formal nights to be a hilight of the cruise & they should continue on with their tradition. I love watching women all fancied up (I just don't want to be one of them!)

There are other expensive cruise lines that have relaxed clothing rules so please don't try to equate this change with a certain economic demographic.

Dress codes are always troublesome as some people will try to push it to the limit. But for me, it boils down to respect for each other.

Well spoken and my sentiments exactly! This just makes my cruise coming up in 62 days!

There are many degrees of casualness. FTLOG...no thanks on visiting the fashion boards

I agree with all you said, but this line (which I have heard before) always baffles me.

I spend not one second more on myself for fromal night than I do for any other night.

I still fuss with my hair, I still put on the same make up. The only difference is what I put on for clothing. To be honest, pulling a long dress over my head usually takes less time than fussing with blouses, pants or skirts. It takes me an hour to get ready no matter what I put on. Hell, even if I was putting on jeans, I'd still do the hair and make up.

What would cause most women to spend more time on formal night??

Just asking.

Honey, you need to find some new female friends. :p

I think some women don't wear a lot of make up normally.. and on a formal night would opt for more? really just a guess.. i wear a lot of make up to sit by the pool, but thats my issue with myself lol;)

Perhaps you did not place your knife in the proper 10 o'clock/4 o'clock position! ;)

"When finished with your meal, place your knife and fork with handles at the 4 o'clock position and the tines of the fork down to signal to the server that you are done."

Now this I did not know!:

"When finished with your meal, it is impolite to leave a dirty napkin on the table or on your dinner plate. The proper place to leave a napkin is on your chair. You may only leave your napkin on the table if everyone is leaving the table all at once. "

:)
