Enforcement of Cuiseline Policies (Smoking or otherwise)

But people can have alcohol in their cabins. You won't know where it came from. It could have come from the bar or was wine purchased or brought aboard (which is permissible). And for so many smokers who claim that smoke cannot be detected on other balconies (not directed at you personally) how is possible that a smoker can 'smell' alcohol on a neighbors balcony. Are they trained alcohol sniffing hounds or something?:p It's understandable to be unset, but I think I would investigate other cruise lines which can meet my needs. Why waste your time turning into a spiteful vigilante?

I am LMAO!!!!!!!!

Probably the lawyers after they saw the effects of the Princess fire.

... and concluded that restricting smoking to only certain open, public areas of the ship, would eliminate the potential of fire.

Really, I wonder the same thing. It almost sounds like you're choosing to ruin your own vacation for the sake of avenging the new smoking policy! Why not just check into some other cruise line that is more smoking friendly???

As far as knowing who has alcohol in their room, I said, if I saw you drinking alcohol or smelled it while I was on a balcony next to you, I would call security. That is the same thing I would expect someone to do if they saw someone smoking on the balcony.

The mere fact of smoking on the balcony will be forbidden under the new policy while drinking is not. How do you know they are not drinking alchohol which was purchased from the cruise ship...

 I find I have to put my 2 cents in. We have reached Elite and Diamond levels by providing these cruise lines with our loyalty over 18 cruises and basically we are now being told that that loyalty is of no cosequence to them. Yes I will book on a cruise where I am comfortable and will start on another loyalty privileges program with a different cruise line. I also understand that smoking has become the bete noir of the 21 century.

Earlier somone had pointed out that there are still 20% of passengers who would like to smoke and while the potential loss of this business will be overlooked for the short term the future launching of all those new ships

may well leave them re-examining a policy that caters to 80% of the prospective passenger base. These are not pleasant economic times - certaintly not the time to shrink your customer base:(

Witnesses.....that was not the point, as I stated smoking on your balcony is forbidden, drinking is not, this guy wants to call security if he smells alchohol on someone's breath...

Is anyone else starting to feel like the hampster on the wheel!!!!

Yes.

Their ship, their rules. Life is too short to worry about what the other guy does or doesn't do and it' s not my job to enforce other's rules. Just choose not to sail on them and go somewhere you think you'll have a good time.

Indeed. have you booked yet?:p I should have added, my dollars, my choice. But really, I'd hate to go on a vacation and be miserable over a policy and make everyone else miserable around me. How fun is that?

I'm all in favor of the new smoking policy BUT enforcement on the balconies will be next to impossible. In the cabins the after smell would be evident for some time afterward but cigarette smoke (although noticeable) when dissipated by the wind would be impossible to pinpoint unless the smoker were to be leaning over the railing. The only way this policy will make any difference is if the smokers police themselves, which will probably never happen.

I think the whole policy around cabins and balconies is completely unenforceable and ridiculous. It is so easy to cover all signs of smoking from the only person who would have daily access to the cabin and any possible way of knowing (the cabin steward). Add to that the fact that the steward has a huge disincentive for turning people in unless he is absolutely positive (THE TIP). Long term damage to carpet and drapes, takes a while to become evident and you could never pinpoint it to a particular passenger. It happens in non-smoking rooms in hotels all the time. I'm a non-smoker but I've been with smokers in a non-smoking room who sit by the the window or open the balcony and make sure the smoke goes outside. Febreeze and other products also work wonders.

The people who have the guts to break the rule will break it routinely ... a little like speeding ... people know there is a chance they will get caught but playing the odds they speed everyday.

Just my opinion, but I believe that Celebrity gets to look like they are appeasing the non-smokers while really quite a large percentage of rooms will be smoked in routinely anyway. Seems like in a way, they just turned Celebrity ships into big houses filled with teenagers smoking in their bedrooms and covering up the smell so mom won't find out. Mom gets to go around bragging how good her parenting is and Johnny smokes a pack a day.

Agree with you completely! And while I am reading all the post about why don't we/me ( us smokers) just cancel and go somewhere else.......I can put the same question to the non smokers......why don't you cancel and go somewhere else where you won't have to listen to us whin!

I've actually wondered how they will enforce this and the only thing I can think of is perhaps the steward will get a portion of the fine, to compensate for the tip they will surely lose from the smoker in question. When they say they will fine and/or enforce their vacation policy, I presume that means they would put repeat offenders off the ship, although that's hard to imagine.

Nonsmokers have never had a better reason to choose Celebrity. There will be more areas of the ship than ever where we won't have to dodge smoke.

I also wondered about that, and I suppose that giving part of the fine proceeds to the cabin steward would be fair, since he/she would be the one trying to clean and deodorize after the errant smoker. Well that, and, I suppose that some folks, being caught & fined, would have the audacity NOT to tip their steward, like it was the STEWARD's fault...

About the repeat offenders, wow, putting them off the ship sounds heavy-duty, but not impossible.

I don't think you're whining. I do think that smokers increasingly have more and more limited options open to them. Even in Italy, they are banning smoking in public places successfully. Here in Ontario, bars and casinos have been smoke-free for years. Even bingos don't have smoking anymore. I think that if smoking is your deal-breaker, you are living in an increasingly small world.

That said, we know more about smoke and its effects than ever. That's going to bring changes like the ones we see on Celebrity, at many of the better hotel chains and in public places.

I would never suggest that you cancel and go some place else. I would presume you chose Celebrity for more reasons than just the availability of an ashtray. That said, there continue to be lots of places to smoke onboard and, obviously, in port. There really is space for everyone onboard.

I agree but this is the quote from the policy:

Violations to Celebrity's smoking policy may result in a $250 cleaning fee charged to the guest's onboard account and may also be addressed through the line's guest conduct policy.

It seems that the only remedy available to them through the policy is disembarkation. By doing it through the guest conduct policy, the line would not be responsible to fly them home.
