Grandeur Bashing on News

Recommended Posts

LOL, while I haven't been on as many cruises as some people:( , I believe I've seen barf bags out at some point on each of the five cruises I have been on;) - not that I've ever had to use them;) (I'm a water country girl - got sea legs before I could even walk!)

On my first cruise I was highly impressed with the "wave pool" on board. I had no idea they weren't doing this on purpose. What was the captain thinking, sailing under these conditions?

And to top it off, he didn't even stop in Haiti because homeland security told him not to.

We should have just stayed home......

NOT! :)

Hi Karen!

You were in our Roll Call, and I do remember you telling us about your family planning to do the burial at sea. (Was it your Mom??) I don't think you were at the Pub Crawl or the Meet & Mingle, due to your circumstances.

Perhaps we can sail again and meet in person next time! How about the Grandeur sailing out of Baltimore in '09 - same week we were on in '06 - last week of August???

Getting back on topic, it bugs me that the news reports everything so one-sided, and as someone else posted, they do this with everything! Now people are going to think cruising is dangerous. As someone else on this thread said, more room on the ship for the rest of us!!

Yes I was on the Roll Call. We didn't do the pub crawl, but we were at the M&M - I actually think we did meet, but it was kind of crazy there! DH won the drawing for a RCCL Hat (if that helps:p ). I would love to do the trip again in '09, but alas, we are curtailing cruising for a bit (one in college the next breathing down the neck of it). In planning for a big family trip to Alaska for 2010. But don't think I won't jump on a great deal if it shows its pretty head;) Oh yes, it was my mom who we buried. Everytime I go down there, I spend a few minutes looking at the water and remembering her...trips are bittersweet and treasured:(

I also agree with the poster who said more room for the rest of us:p

Typical Fox BS. Kim Hoppe(the Interviewee) obviously has never sailed on rough seas. We ahve been on 7 cruises and on 3 of those cruises "barf" bags were visable in the stairwells, for those that might need one. I have never seen one used, thank goodness.

Rock on Capt. Rob, you're the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what exactly was the point of the Fox news story? I really don't understand - the ship arrived late. There were no injuries, no arrests, nothing but rough seas. Must have been a SLOOOOW news day:rolleyes:

Other than bashing RC, what WAS the point??? Maybe the lady who was interviewed is trying to get her money back, or something.

Having been in media for over 30 years........the point is viewers and ratings.......unfortunately this type of story "brings" more viewers than a nice story about relief supplies being sent to China.......it's not just Fox.....CNN.....all of them do it......

You should really see it during a sweeps period......it's worse if you can believe that.........

You just take it for what it is..........shake your head and move on and see what tomorrow brings.:(

FIRST TIME CRUISER :D

On all my cruises I'd have to say Capt Rob is just THE BEST ever...I agree with ChevyCruiser....I'd sail with him anytime - anywhere

there's surely something wrong when you only have an interview with only ONE person from a ship of nearly 2000.....Oh well, Welcome Home Kim Hoppe!! kiss the ground, hug a tree and book a flight cuz I'd greatly take your pool chair;)

Nope, I wasn't there, would have loved to be, though. Wonder what it'd be like to go through a storm on a ship with a keel.

Even better than that, try one with a flat bottom (well deck) on the Amphibious Assault ships like the LHA's (Peleliu and Belleau Wood come to mind). Oh, and no stabilizers allowed, that would be cheating.

My dad was on the Nassau, and I remember them pulling out of Norfolk for a tropical storm. Most of the rest of the time I was growing up, he was on smaller ships (DD, FFG), they always pulled out for big storms because it was safer (for the ship). Hurricanes David, Gloria, and Hugo, too many tropical storms to name, they always left if they were in port, and sometimes had an easier time of it than us on land (Hugo was scary).

It seems that every time we sail the North Atlantic, we deal with some rough seas at some point. I figured it just comes with the territory. When I took my kids on their first cruise and we wanted a calmer ride, so we just sailed to Ensenada. I'm not sure we ever completely left sight of land  , but it was very smooth.

Crookedhalo,

DId you actually put a body into the sea or did you scatter ashes? And who arranged it, you talking directly with RCI or was it a Funeral Home.

Thank you in advance for your reply. I apologize if my question upsets you. I have a family member that wants to be buried at sea and am wondering (as we get older) how this will be done and arranged.

Thank you so much for posting the link to the news article. I never would have expected to actually hear Captain Rob's voice while sitting at my old desktop reading CC blogs. When I clicked play and actually heard Captain Rob speaking I wanted to get my Cruise Compass to what time the show was going to start. Love that ship and Captain Rob.

I'll bet the lady in the interview also get's upset when the bus driver goes over the railroad tracks instead of driving around the other end of town looking for an over/underpass!

Don't they also have barf bags prestaged in the pocket of the seat in front of you on an airplane? That was real evidence she showed. How do we know she didn't stage the barf bag there anyway?

Now we know why their are ambulance chasers everywhere in this country and why the costs of good and services go up sometimes for no explicable reason....

I sailed on the Grandeur last May to Bermuda and wasn't the lease bit impressed. Sailed to Bermuda before and I have to say the Grandeur was the roughest ship I have ever been on....Love Fox and love to cruise, just not on the Grandeur of the Seas..and yes I am and so is the lady on the news show entitled to our opinions.

I would hate to see the story if it were not so "FAIR AND BALANCED!"

What a hatchet job!

Just another person looking for their reason to be important!

Get a life!

BILL

Had it been covered on an ABC/NBC/CBS affiliate or CNN then the reporter would have certainly blamed republicans and President Bush for the poor weather and rough seas.

Burial at sea is a misnomer. We actually scattered her ashes at her request (she never wanted to be cold again). It was handled through (of all divisions) the air deviation department (if my memory is correct). They contacted the ship and let them know that it had been approved. Once on board I contacted the Asst. Purser (Margarite, I believe) who helped up make all the arrangments necessary. On one of the sea days, they escorted our group down to deck 2 and had an open door (the same one you leave the ship on at port) with a guard rail across it. They very respectfully stood back and gave us as much time as we needed to take to say goodbye. We read a few of her favorite poems, scattered her ashes (actually encased in a quick disolve sock type scarf) and scattered rose petals saved from her service. It was very special to all of us. HTH

Saw the interview when it was on the news and the lady talked about lots of people being sick. Nothing unusual about that if there are rough seas but she also talked about numerous injuries. Just what are numerous injuries? Her one example was an elderly lady falling on the stairs.

Didn't know RC allows that. Indeed very special, nice to know how caring they were. My condolences to you and your family.

When I heard Captain Rob's recorded announcement Saturday night on the news, I started missing the Grandeur and Captain Rob all over again! We've been on her 3 times, all with Captain Rob. A few weeks ago I had suggested to DH that we go on the Grandeur 9-day caribbean leaving August, 27, 2009, but didn't really bug him about it. I told him on the phone tonight that we're going!!

To the other poster who wasn't impressed......I can understand what you're saying, as the food is so-so on this ship and it is an older ship. However, there are several things that make us keep coming back to the Grandeur. Living 30 minutes from the port is a big part of it. Another big thing is kind of a local thing for us in that the ship population is largely made up of people from the Baltimore area. If you've ever been to ole Bawl-ti-more, you'll know that people from this area are very friendly and kind. No, they aren't ever going to be rich or famous, or sophisticated, but there's nothing like going to the Caribbean with a bunch of friendly, down-to-earth folks from my hometown. Nothing like hearing a greeting from folks you've met on-board that kind of goes like, "How ya doin', HON?" The third thing we like on the Grandeur, in no particular order, is Captain Rob. He's one of the few American captains, and he cracks us up. We've been on Norwegian and Celebrity, and those captains were kind of stern and unapproachable.

Yes, we're going on the Liberty for our Labor Day cruise this year, but we will be back on the Grandeur, because it's really our HOME cruiseship!

Please note that we were TWO of the three Baltimore Raven's fans onboard the Empress out of Philly last year. The rest of the ship were Eagle's fans (go figure), but the Philadelphia folks were as equally kind as the Baltimore folks. We were very sorry to see the Empress leave Philadelphia, because we would have cruised on her again, too!!

Suze!
