To wear hose...or not to wear hose...

So now you are a snob if you don't wear hose:confused:

No, you are a snob if you make fun of women that wear hose, or that don't wear hose, or that wear hose with open-toed shoes, or for any other reason that boils down to personal preference!

I don't think YOU are a snob.

Finally someone who has the nerve to be who they are and do what makes them feel comfortable! Nananabooboo to all those women who think they are the final experts on deciding that "you just don't wear hose anymore". Believe it or not, in FLA people wear hose alot! Too cold in ac all the time..oh my..another myth basher..the natives wear hose in the Carribean, according to my MIL. I've mentioned this on other threads realted to this but I always feel I have to say it again and again..she is West Indian (Jamaican) and on a hot sunny day here in Florida, at the church picnic nonetheless, ALL the women, from the toddlers up to the elderly...ALL WORE HOSE! Not a bare leg in the house! I asked a few of the women about it, and my MIL, and they all said "In Jamaica it just isn't appropriate to not wear hose with a dress."

I think this is an American phenomena..this revolt against wearing hose. I don't see that in Europe or South America, either...M

I have thunder thighs and the pantyhose helps to prevent them from rubbing together. Bet you didnt think of that reason. :D

That always made it worse for me. I have to wear a split slip over mine. I used to wear shorts before I discovered the slip. I'm now kicking myself I didn't discover the slip years earlier. It's heaven.

Please give more info!! Who makes a split slip? I'm going way back here, but in the '60's we called them petti pants:)

I don't have anything against hose in general - but I don't like them with open toed sandals. And my Mom still will wear off white with open toed sandals! I don't like off-white on anyone but little girls! But with a closed toe shoe - they do make an outfit much nicer - I've just gotten too lazy and rarely remember to buy hose anymore! I get SOOO hot and have flashes all the time due to early chemical menopause and some medication I take - so I just really HATE to wear hose. So forgive some of us white legged, cat scratched, file cabinet bruised legs and know we're just hot! :D

I don't think that's what she meant at all - She was calling "snobs" the people that would care whether SHE wore hose.

I don't think that they are "snobs" so much as poor souls who should be pitied because they have nothing better to occupy their minds than what someone else is wearing.:D

Count me in with the hose wearing crowd. I happen to have great legs thanks to heredity and a ton and a half of dance training when I was much, much younger. However these great legs are now on the wrong side of 60 and lily-white - I will never get a tan as long as I live, simply freckles - so for me hose are a must. I don't particularly like wearing them but "il faut suffrir d'etre belle" (one must suffer to be beautiful);) .

To wear hose...or not to wear hose...I have personally answered that question for myself once and for all!

I have read so many post on these threads about women who refuse to wear hose (which is their right) during a formal evening-social event because it is considered a fashion faux pas. Even to the point that some women have stated in post that they "laugh at women who wear hose" when they see them. Now those of us who would rather wear hose for various reasons are shocked and worried that some women on cruises & in social events will laugh at us for wearing hose with sandaled/toe-less heels!!!

Does anyone else think the same way as I...or am I the only hose-wearing women left on the face of the Earth?

I absolutely, totally agree with you. I detest seeing hoseless legs. I find nothing attractive about them at all (unless they belong to Vanna). I always wear hose with my dresses and if people are laughing at me, so be it. However, on all the cruises I have been on, I have never seen anyone look at anyone's legs and start laughing. You are definitely not the last hose-wearing woman in the world - I am right there with you. Travelgirl

Wearing hose (at any age) is not a fashion faux pas, but, as Charla Krup points out repeatedly in her book "How Not to Look Old", one of the biggest ways to look frumpy and dowdy, and a giant no-no, is to ever wear nude hose. If you feel you asolutely need hose for evening (and sometimes I do), go for sheer black, not nude. And while it's not fashion-forward to wear any hose with peeptoe shoes or sandals, it is downright ugly if the hose are reinforced toe and not sandalfoot. Same for knee highs with skirts unless the skirt is so long that the knee high's top band will not show when you sit.

For the thunder thighs -- I have them, too - wear a boyshort (midthigh) length panty or Spanxx. That'll take care of the thighs and the tummy, too.

Happy cruising. :)

I've read that book too, and I she has lots of good advice. Much of her advice deals with not getting stuck in a time warp. This is where her hose advice comes from too. In the 80's the hose we wore were made of old-style nylon (too matte or too shiny and in "nude", "beige" and "suntan" tones that nowhere near appoximated an actual skin tone) that gave a very artificial appearance to the legs. These are still available today and my grandmother continues to buy and wear them.

However, there are other choices available today - modern fibers that virtually disappear on the leg - these are not your grandmother's hose. They are definitely NOT aging and do restore a more youthful appearance to the leg. I will continue to wear these with closed-toe shoes for dressy and formal occasions. I know I look better with them no matter what an "expert" says.

I have heard several people here mention "spanx". I am sorry if I sound ignorant or stupid, but what are/is "spanx"? Is it a brand of panty hose?

Spanx is kind of like a girdle, in my opinion. It's a shaper that goes from just under your boobs down to your knees...lol....um...yeah...that's more comfy than pantyhose.

But I kid...there are different styles of Spanx. I would just prefer very sheer pantyhose. I wear Hanes Absolutely Ultra Sheer Pantyhose in Natural shade. You can get them at Dillard's and they are the most sheer pantyhose I've ever worn. You can't even see them once you have them on, not even at the toe.

Well, now I"m confused. I"m going to a dressy evening wedding next Saturday. I"m wearing a very dressy knee length black dress with patent leather pumps...closed toe.

I was planning on getting a pair of the Hanes Ultra Sheer hose that someone said were nice in a natural shade as I thought it was "out" to wear black hose with black dress.

Now, I read that's it's aging to wear the natural shade of hose?

WHICH SHOULD I WEAR?

I think that black hose has always been O.K. for evening. For daytime this month's Vogue shows opaque black and colored hose with open toe shoes for fall. Niemen Marcus showed this look last fall in their catalog.

By the way, sandalfoot hose was invented to wear with SANDALS!! Pantihose was invented when miniskirts first came in. Before that, women wore stockings with garters - either a girdle or garterbelt. Prior to that, the only time women went without stockings was during World War II because you couldn't get silk or nylon. You could get rayon which was awful because it bagged so women wore leg makup which rubbed off.

This is a history lesson for those of you who are too young to remember.

Sorry :( :( :(

I don't think Jane110 meant to make you feel bad - she probably just felt the website could explain it better than she could.

I do love those Power Panties (The regular waisted ones) They look and feel great and really last. Get a size larger than you think you need though.

I don't have any marks on my legs and I have a tan, so I prefer to go hoseless... but it comes at a price. I always get a crop of blisters no matter what kind of shoes or sandles I wear. I've tried blister sticks, clear band aids, anything I can think of.

How do you hoseless ladies do it and keep your feet happy???????

P.S. I go hoseless but I would never ever laugh at anyone else because of hose or no hose.

For a Summer wedding, I would wear natural. For Fall or Winter black black would be fine.
