usha Posted August 4, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 4, 2008 When is HAL going to... get into this millennium, and insitute a stricter smoking policy??? Most people don't want walk out onto their balcony and smell smoke from next door. And, guess what???? We ALSO don't want to BEG our neighbor to have mercy on us, and not smoke on their balcony while we're out on OUR balcony. It's WAY past time for HAL to recognize that non-smokers are the future, and smokers are, well, a dying breed.

Travalerie Posted August 4, 2008 #7 Share Posted August 4, 2008 I guess this has been addressed before...but I would love a smoke free cabins. I have two young kids and am allergic. we should not forget the bars and lounges. Its about the weorkers, why should they be exposed to second hand smoke and put at risk for cancer just to make a living?

Krazy Kruizers Posted August 4, 2008 #9 Share Posted August 4, 2008 For the last several cruises we have been filling out those questionaires concerning smoking -- but so far -- haven't seen much change. I know -- they now have a couple of smoke free nights in the casinno -- but we don't gamble. Verandah -- sure wish a few of our neighbors weren't smokers. catl331 Posted August 4, 2008 #11 Share Posted August 4, 2008 had a guy smoking cigars constantly on his veranda next door and I barely used the balcony. Seems that even opening the door invited cigar smoke in. I guess his wife didn't want him smoking in the room. Cigar smoking should be allowed out on the bow or the top deck! m steve Posted August 4, 2008 #12 Share Posted August 4, 2008 the simple answer to your question is Celebrity. You should sail on their ships and let the smokers enjoy their balconies on HAL. That's a win/win solution.
Travalerie Posted August 4, 2008 #13 Share Posted August 4, 2008 the simple answer to your question is Celebrity. You should sail on their ships and let the smokers enjoy their balconies on HAL. That's a win/win solution. I am really trying to let this go, but let you "enjoy" your balcony? It is one thing to be able to do what you want as long as it is does not affect other people. This type of thinking appears extremely selfish. That is why there are rules and laws for the greater good. Parents are enjoying their cigarettes around their children and they are up all night coughing developing asthma and all kinds of allergies. Do we let drinkers have a drink and "enjoy" a ride in the car??
northernphoenix Posted August 4, 2008 #14 Share Posted August 4, 2008 Am new to this forum, and as a Canadian, who is quite famiiar with what some might consider extreme "smoking" laws, yes folks, Ontarians cannot smoke in their personal vehicle if a minor is aboard. I have come to appreciate "no smoking" or restricted smoking areas. Am destined for AK aboard the Volendam, Sept.09. Am travelling with three smoke- sensitive family members. Are there any smoking restrictions , at all?
kakalina Posted August 4, 2008 #15 Share Posted August 4, 2008 Yes, they do. Drinkers can drive after having a drink as long as the blood level isn't above certain levels. Smoking is not illegal. Until it is made contraband HAL has the right, no the obligation to offer all of their pax the right to enjoy their vacation within the rules set forth. If you do not like HAL policies go elsewhere. That is why there is more than one cruise line out there.
gg3 Posted August 4, 2008 #16 Share Posted August 4, 2008 While I understand your concern about smoke invading your balcony (yes, on our last Alaska cruise, the fellow in the cabin next door spent much time smoking an awful smelling cigar on his balcony and it was not a pleasant experience for us....in fact it took a lot of our balcony time from us), but I can tell you, as the folks already posting the humorous notes are telling you......there are two very different (maybe more) opinions on this issue. It goes right along with "Jeans in the Dining Room" "Crocs" "Smuggling Alcohol" "Chair Hogs".......what other hot topics am I forgetting, guys ??? :D gg

vbmom87 Posted August 4, 2008 #19 Share Posted August 4, 2008 Am destined for AK aboard the Volendam, Sept.09. Am travelling with three smoke- sensitive family members. Are there any smoking restrictions , at all? I am not sure of all the restrictions. I know you can't smoke in the dining rooms and I don't think you can smoke in any public areas. We never encountered anyone smoking in a public area on the Volendam. I am VERY smoke sensitive. It sets off my asthma. I was very concerned about it since HAL does allow smoking in cabins. We were on the Volendam, and I noticed very little smoke. Our cabin was perfect, but I was prepared to have the room steward bring in one of those machines that gets rid of the smoke smell if I did get a cabin with an odor. On our particular cruise there seemed to be few smokers. I saw a few on the promenade outside deck. Even the casinos didn't seem to have a lot of smokers, but yes, they were in there and we avoided the casino. There were 3 smoke free nights, but we didn't bother. Smoke still lingers and bothers me. One day we had to leave the Crow's Nest because of smoke. There are smoking areas there and we rarely saw anyone smoking, except for that one day. As soon as I smelled it, we left. In spite of my concerns prior to the cruise, it ended up that we had no reason to worry. We had a great cruise that was not ruined by smokers.
