When Is Hal Going To...

I didn't say diddly about outlawing all smoking on ships in public spaces.

It would just be great to breathe air on my balcony instead of "enjoying" my neighbor's cigarette/cigar.

I don't think that's too much to ask of HAL.

No, you didn't actually say that, but considering that there are few places to smoke publicly on the ship, and you don't want folks smoking on their balconys - - what's left?

You mentioned you want HAL to be like other lines. Isn't the balcony the only place one line lets people smoke? Outlaw that and they can't smoke anywhere.

You (meaning all non-smokers not just you the OP) don't want any public areas to have smokers, yet don't want them smoking in their cabins either because you might get that room next. And they can't smoke on their balconies because you might both be on your balconies at the same time.

I think Celebrity is more your style, since smokers cause you that much grief.

Most people don't want walk out onto their balcony and smell smoke from next door.

And, guess what???? We ALSO don't want to BEG our neighbor to have mercy on us, and not smoke on their balcony while we're out on OUR balcony.

It's WAY past time for HAL to recognize that non-smokers are the future, and smokers are, well, a dying breed.

hmmmm....I guess I'm not most people. This non-smoker doesn't care about being around others who want to smoke their cancer-sticks. I'm not about to tell my neighbor what they can & can't do in their cabin or on their balcony any more than I'll tell them.......what they can and cannot wear on a given night.

HAL has the right, no the obligation to offer all of their pax the right to enjoy their vacation within the rules set forth.

If you do not like HAL policies go elsewhere. That is why there is more than one cruise line out there.

HAL also has the right to change their rules as demand changes...If HAL changes to a more restrictive smoking policy than smokers can go elsewhere...There is more than one cruiseline out there.

I'm guessing HAL will add more smoking restrictions in the coming months. Smoking was discussed in a question and answer session on our last cruise. The response was most most passengers want more restrictions and that HAL was probably going to increase smoking strictions.

Celebrity is wonderful. HAL is wonderful, too.

HAL would be even more wonderful if they updated their smoking policy.

Agree. These threads accomplish nothing.

Oh... I wouldn't say they accomplish nothing... I find them very entertaining. And as I await my cruise date, it helps me keep awake rather than taking my afternoon naps :D

Jemima, I sure hope you're right about changes coming. It's hard to imagine that HAL would continue to ignore the preferences of the majority.

Could I most respectfully request you use bold if using this color print. I can't read it and others on this boad in the past have said they can't see this light color ink. I have to work too hard to read your message and don't want to miss what you have to say.

Thanks if you can accomodate.

Well actually this one has. I came to this board today because I was considering taking a cruise on HAL next year (Veendam out of Tampa). I had no idea that smoking was such a big issue on HAL. Cigarette smoke bothers me a great deal. Because of the posts in this thread, I will look elsewhere for our cruise next year. Thanks for the information.

Don't worry ... it may be a big issue on the BOARDS, but it's really not that big of an issue aboard ship. :)

There are a couple of lounges where smoking is permitted (the Sports Bar and the Bar area of the Ocean Bar/Lounge). The casino has smoking and non-smoking nights. Apart from this, the places where one is permitted to smoke are highly limited aboard ship.

RevNeal, have you ever opened your balcony door and been smacked in the face with cigar smoke?

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeshhhhhh! That was a definite issue aboard ship for me.

Your original post was non-specific and requested increased restrictions on all smoking.

Between my cruise in Oct 06 and the next one in Feb 07, HAL did change to a more restrictive smoking policy. In Oct, smoking was permitted in the inside Lido bar area, and in Feb, not any more. In Oct 06 smoking was permitted anywhere in the outdoor pool area and in Feb there were areas where no smoking was requested. I'm not sure about cigars, but the sense I got was that cigars were allowed on Oct. in certain indoor public areas and in Feb they were banished to outdoor venues or to restricted indoor areas for certain events.

I say ban the perfume and keep the cigars. :D

Hear, hear! Nothing worse than being overwhelmed by the scent of Chanel # White Diamonds in the Red Door that was oh so generously applied.

I will say this, and maybe it makes me an odd ball as well, I can't tolerate cigarette smoke well at all - it almost instanly triggers a headache. Same thing with really strong perfume. And yet cigar smoke doesn't bother me anywhere near as much. You'd think smoke is smoke and both would bug me equally.

I usually book insides or outsides, and only occasionally balconies. Hence ... I've never had that happen to me. If I did, I don't think I would be especially bothered by it ... I'm not overly sensitive to cigar smoke or the smell of cigar smoke, which is what I think you actually mean. I understand that many people are especially sensitive to smoke an to the odor of the smoke, and for them I am particularly concerned.

Nevertheless, the fact is that throughout the ship smoking isn't nominally a problem. Most people are highly considerate of others, with the kind of contention which we see on this board not reflecting what usually happens aboard ship.

Stepping out on our balcony while the ship is moving at speed and having my temporary neighbor(s) light up a cigaret/cigar/pipe does not bother us. It's out in the open - any smoke that heads our way is only there temporary (unless it likes our balcony so much, it decides to set up camp and stick around for a couple of hours)

I seldom see this poster post about anything else .. but it doesn't seem to matter where on the boards there is a smoking thread .. we do find the OP.

Non-smokers are a majority and that is why the smoking is confined to such small spaces on board. Out of door balconies .. as John pointed out receive whiffs of smoke perhaps .. but it is one of the few places SOME cruise lines allow smoking. I know that so I book a balcony .. if I hated smoking this much I would not book a balcony or I would book a more strategically positioned balcony. In any event .. I would Know before I go and plan my trip (as one individual on the ship) in accordance with the information supplied by that cruise line. I know that some ships do not allow smoking on the balcony and thus I would choose not to book with them. That just seems like common sense to me.

There's SOOOOO much more to life (and cruising) than smoking (and smoking threads).

You can click on a poster's name, and find their other posts, by the way. I figured that since you didn't think I posted about anything besides smoking, you might not know that.

First let me pre-qualify the boards. I don't smoke.

I read these smoking threads and just shake my head.

To all of those who dislike smoking. Why don't you actually do something about it?

Go to the Seattle headquarters and hold picket signs or a sandwhich board displaying your dislike of smoking.

15531_cacuasian_man_holding_up_a_blank_wooden_sign_while_picketing_and_on_strike.jpg

Have a million mile smokers march to the company headquarters.

All band together and lay in front of the gangway at the pier so passengers can't board the ship,to protest their smoking policies.

On a positive note.

Why not visit some area schools and deliver the message to all kids who might be inclined to smoke. Explain to them that smoking is bad. Who knows you might just stop a few from smoking.

Help someone kick the habit.

I guess the first few ideas are negative, and these are positive but either of them will ACTUALLY BE DOING SOMETHING!

Whining on a mesage board,is fruitless, and a gigantic waste of time. It's actually like cigarette smoke ,STALE!

Not true or at least not true on my last three cruises. I have overheard a number of people complain about the smoke on each of these cruises. I have also observed people seated in non-smoking areas and moving because of the quantity of smoke coming from the smoking area. On at least a couple of occasions, smokers sat in the smoking area and blew smoke rings into the non-smoking portions of the Crows Nest. Both times the Crows Nest was crowded or fairly crowded.
