inai Posted October 16, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 16, 2008 Has anyone heard anything about HAL coming back to NY homeport and than doing sailings south? We live in NY and don't fly. We enjoy HAL cruising and don't want to sail the Canada/New England cruises again. Three times is enough.
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 16, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2008 I wouldn't count on it -- too many problems with the ships getting in late -- due to weather going past the outer banks of North Carolina.
RuthC Posted October 16, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 16, 2008 Never say "never", but there's been no scuttlebutt that HAL will return to NYC. Maybe someday---we can always hope.
takemewithyou Posted October 16, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 16, 2008 What about the Bermuda sailings in summer (August) 2010 - aren't they out of NYC?
RuthC Posted October 16, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 16, 2008 Oops. Of course, you're right. I was even thinking as I typed how HAL was finally returning to Bermuda. :o But I was picturing the Caribbean when I read the OP's post. So, it's "yes" to NYC cruises south, just not terribly far south. ;)

Some one will correct me if I am wrong and those don't start until August, 2010. But, if you are looking for something from NYC, those trips are expected to be 7 days with stops in Hamilton and ST. George.

I hate flying too, yet am doing just that to catch up with the Noordam in Ft. lauderdale. I know it will be worth it, but flying is such a hassle. Luv4dacruise Posted October 17, 2008 #9 Share Posted October 17, 2008 I wouldn't count on it -- too many problems with the ships getting in late -- due to weather going past the outer banks of North Carolina. I don't think this is really a reason for them not returning to NYC for Caribbean cruises. Other lines (RCI and Norwegian) have had ships there year round for a few years now. I heard through the grapevine it was more the average HAL passenger spends quite a bit less onboard, and with an itinerary like that, ya need to make up for the extra cost of the fuel on the 2-3 sea days south. Makes sense to me.
inai Posted October 17, 2008 Author #10 Share Posted October 17, 2008 Thank you to all who responded to my question. According to the linked article, HAL will start in Aug 09: http://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/Cruise_News_Wire/Cruise_News_%7C_Cruise_Business_Wire/10%1017%1008_-_Bermuda_Changes_Focus/ To cf chuck: Nice to see HAL will be going to Bermuda. We were hoping for the Caribbean as we have been to Bermuda many times and are ruuning out of things to do there. We love the island. We also got married there 6 years. ago while crusing. Thank you. Quote from Luv4dacruise I heard through the grapevine it was more the average HAL passenger spends quite a bit less onboard, and with an itinerary like that, ya need to make up for the extra cost of the fuel on the 2-3 sea days south. To Luv4dacruise: You would think that sea days would be better since the bars are open, casinos are open, shops are open, (all closed in port) and specialty restaurants are open for business. We hope that they come back to NY. We love the caribbean.
inai Posted October 17, 2008 Author #11 Share Posted October 17, 2008 I just checked the HAL website and the Veendam has no scheduled sailings from NY to Bermuda in 2009 or 2010 . How do you all know that the Veendam will change its schedule?

So, they start sailing in Aug. 2010. That's why their website doesn't show it listed. Sailings only go through April 2010. Thanks.
