formal night question

Recommended Posts

That is not true at all...

I grew up going to private schools and was taught manners.
Because I chose to wear a dress or a skirt/shirt to formal night does not make me disrespectful.

We have NEVER had people leave our table. I wouldn't want to spend a week with someone with a stick up their butts.

My take on it is simple. If I'm seated with someone who has such a lack of respect to not at least make an effort to follow the ships requested dress code, I'll ask for another table.

The way you dress says alot about your manners and the way you conduct yourself in general, and I don't want to spend a week with rude and disrespectful people.

I am not sure what you do in Delaware but the weddings here in Florida are usually pretty casual.

Would you go 'slumming' to your son or daughters wedding?

If you answered yes, feel free to not dress up on formal nights. Most wear the same type of attire they'd wear to a wedding.

I personally would feel out of place not dressing up on formal night. I would not feel comfortable wearing 'casual' clothes to a wedding and therefore I would not feel right wearing them on formal nights on a cruise.

Just my opinion.

Wearing the requested dress is a sign of respect. Ignoring your hosts request is not.

I will not sit with someone who is so disrespectful as to not even make an attempt to respect thier hosts wishes.

Many people go to the best private schools. Paris Hilton being one of them. 'Nuff said.

Weddings in the Northeast are generally rather formal. The closer you get to the NYC metropolitan area, the more likely the wedding will be black tie.

What a formal night thread this has turned out to be. Let me get this straight: TSeago who has been on 3 Disney cruises shows her friend a photo on formal night (Ducklite made the point Disney does not have a formal night except on the 7 nighter which we still don't know if TSeago took this photo on a 3,4 or 7 night cruise)and says nobody dresses formal on cruises anymore. The photo being the proof of this I would have to know more of which Disney cruise it was taken on. I've done Disney 7 day
and they most certain dress up on formal night.
Sure not that many tuxes and gowns but dress up for sure that night. Coat and Tie at least.
A lady can get by with a white shirt and skirt on formal night but a man who shows up in a shirt and skirt will be turned away. I get the vibes that TSeago has a great model like appearence and doesn't need much to dress up on formal night. And this is fine. I am sure her friend could do the same and nothing will be said about it. Just don't be too comfortable as in designer Tshirt with fancy jeans and flip flops. However if either one of you girls sat at my table stark naked I would not complain a bit. You would problably look better than others in full sequin gowns.
I would guess that TSeago has not heard about Jeff Foxworthy or else she would understand the meaning of the word phrase "'nuff said"
That's okay we've never heard of a "chad" until someone decided the votes need to be counted in Florida where TSeago is from.

On Norweigan you do not have to get dressed up for formal evening, it is optional. However, your friend is going on Royal Caribbean.

Also, in one of your previous posts you said you were going to eat in the "nice place." Is this, by chance, the dining room? You are a travel agent? Is your next cruise on a big or little boat?

Nuff said.

WOW, this thread has gotten way out of hand. I never expected this, usually when I ask a question I'm lucky if I get 3 responses.
I just want to say that I appreciate everyones help. But some of you mentioned that Tracy is purposely trying to ruin my cruise. She is not, she is my friend and i just trying to help. She never told me to wear jeans and go that casual, some folks interpreted wrong. She simply suggested that I would be more comfortable in a short dress rather than a formal dress. and for my hubby, that he didn't have to wear a suit. We have dress clothes that are not casual and not too formal, like what you would wear at a nice restaurant. & that is what she meant. anyways everyones points have been expresed, thanks :-),
lets retire this thread!
thanks

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>Based on this paragraph of yours:

<UL TYPE=SQUARE>She has seen my pictures and has seen what I wore on formal nights...We fit in just fine...I still wore either a dress or a skirt...never a really fancy dress...IMO it is more important to be comfortable. I wanted her to know that being really formal is not "crusie ship law."
I would have thought you crusied on ships.

Until someone else pays for my cruise and/or RCI turns me away at the door I will wear what I want, when I want on smart casual nights. True formal nights are a different story. But to equate the type of clothes you wear to the manners you have is beyond stupid. Why not make it truly formal and require every person to wear designer tuxs/gowns. Anything from a department store would be considered less classy.

That being said, dear Gisela...I am done here....this has been pure fodder for my entertainment.

See guys? I love Gisi and just want her to have a great laid back cruise. She has taken EVERYONE'S opinion and will judge accordingly.

Happy cruising to you all...no matter what you wear....Just know T.Seago will be comfortable when she travels! (>'.'<)

Like I said, "the more likely". Doens't mean all are formal. but many are. I'd say 10% are informal with receptions in church halls or firehalls, 40% are formal (black tie) and the other 50% are semi-formal with men in conservative suits and women in cocktail dresses or Easter Sunday on the time of day of the reception. Where the wedding reception is held and at what time of day makes a difference, an evening reception at a posh country club or hotel ballroom will generally be minimum semi-formal, while a wedding held in a park with a reception in a firehall will be casual. You get very, very few of the latter around here.

At the "nice" restuarants where I live, you won't even be seated without a jacket and tie. Same thing for most of the nicer places in Las Vegas, San Francisco, etc. But then again, some people think Olive Garden and Red Lobster are really "nice". I NEVER equated designer clothing to manners. I did equate not following a requested dress code with manners.

And last time I looked, many fine department stores carry a line of haute coutre.

I agree you can get a nice suit at Neiman or Filenes, but unless they show up in Gucci or D&G the entire formal night is just ruined for me. I mean come on girls in Steve Maddens pretending to be formal, just crawl back to the trailor. I for one would not and will not sit with anyone wearing "normal" formal clothes. Enjoy

If this is what the waiter was saying to you:

"if you want to dress formal or casual it does not matter just come and enjoy the food and service"

I think that the waiter wants to be sure that you come to the dining to ensure that he will get his tip. He probably thinks that if you have to dress formal that you may not show up and therefore he gets less in tips. Yes, I know that you are supposed to tip whether you go to the dining room or not, but I would think that a lot of cruisers don't.
