Tastings - Martini, Wine...etc Sharing??

I'm trying to get some clarification on whether or not you can share. There is no way I could drink 5 - 6 Martini's even if they were half size. Same goes for that much wine. My DH and I were planning on trying a couple on the Pearl but we wanted to share. I just read on a new posting that they thought NCL wasn't allowing sharing anymore... not sure I understand why since its the same amount of the drink. If anyone has done any of these recently please let me know what you have seen.

I hope you are wrong, they allowed it on the Spirit..You are right, it should make no difference and yes, the amount you get at these clinics is a lot for most of us. Let's put it this way, if you drink all of them or even taste all, the people who you didn't know when you arrived will end up being your best friends at the end of the hour. lol

Ha Ha! Surprisingly (or not!), we met more great folks at the tastings than anywhere else! We had a ball! :D

As far as sharing...they did allow it on the Star a year ago, but most people do their own.

DD and I did our own as well, also did it on the Spirit, but almost slept through dinner. In fact when DD and I did it on the Sun a few years ago, we went back to our cabin, set the alarm for 6pm (had 6:45 dinner reservations) and I woke up at 6:30. the problem, she forgot the alarm clock was part of her cell phone, that of course didn't work on the ship. Bad martinis, almost cost us a good dinner. LOL

We did the martini one on the Dawn, and asked if we could share. The answer was yes, but it will be a single glass for each martini. We somehow  ended up not sharing, but there was a couple where only the lady drank martinis, and her husband was having a beer. I don't see how they could stop him from having any of her martinis.

We were served 7 martinis each, and I wished we did share.

People were permitted to share out of the same glass on our trip on the Majesty. The bartender said they track the number of drinks poured into the glasses to be sure that everyone who paid received their drink. Otherwise it could become too confusing to figure out who gets half drinks and who gets full drinks. There were lots of people at our martini tasting and we had lots of fun. My husband decided to join in halfway through and they charged him half price.

I can certainly understand that. We would have shared a glass anyway, we share drinks all the time when we go out. I just know from what I've read these are really good deals and WAY more than I can drink. I have only ever had one martini in my life so I figured this would be a good way to try the different variations.

I thought that you couldn't share but I honestly don't know where I got that idea. They don't have a problem w/ swapping . . . I know that b/c I don't like classic martinis but my companion at the tasting did & she didn't like really sweet ones so . . .

As I recall, the martinis were served in a traditional sized martini glass, not the mega-sized glass that you get when you order a cosmo at a restaurant. They also served the fruity martinis in the smaller sized glasses. All in all there was a generous amount served, but we were still able to locate our room after the event. :D The bartender was very informative as he explained the history of each drink. It was very serious business. ;)

We also did a martini tasting on a Celebrity ship in Aug 08. The cost was the same with 6 mini samples. There was no discussion, just a board with the drinks and a booklet identifying the ingredients of each drink. I think the booklet was intended to advertize the alcohol available at the on ship liquor store. This was much less interesting or fun than the NCL martini tasting.

Edgardo = the best bartender on the Spirit at Champagne Charlie's....he did the martini and mojito tastings on our August 23rd 2008 cruise and he did allow sharing from the same glass..

It was worth the $15 and actually would have been worth it if we both paid...but yes...too much for each of us to have our own glass...that night we slept like babies...lol

I was the one that said "no sharing" may be the policy now. Here's where I got my information. I'm glad to hear that it's not the case for most cruises, but it wouldn't matter for us, if you catch my drift. ;)

Here's the thread the quotes below came from:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=889354&highlight=

Just a quick note...I was on the Dawn two weeks ago and they did not allow sharing. We attended a mojito and a martini tasting and both times inquired if we could just split the drinks and the answer was no both times. It wasn't a matter of cost...more the fact I'm a small girl and it is quite a lot of alcohol. Instead we both indulged and had to sleep it off that afternoon! :)

It is a big portion on the Martini tasting and they also did not let sharing. Lots of snoring before dinner ;).

They actually did "police" it do a certain extent. You paid and you got a sticker (like a shore ex sticker) and only those with stickers were allowed to sit at the tables where they were delivering the drinks.

Not to say you couldn't heft the drink over to a table where someone else was sitting. And probably get a rather "dry" comment from the bartender running the show (we are talking martini's after all :o).

On other cruise lines we've been on the sharing wasn't a big deal but on Spirit it seemed to be discouraged as much as sneaking booze on board ;).

We had 36 people at our martini tasting on the GEM and after the 2nd (out of 4) everybody knew everybody and by the 4th it was so loud in bar central that people from the casino were coming out to see what the heck was going on. They didn't have enough glasse so there were some of us iwho ued the glasses you see attachehd here. It really was a blast.

I was just on the Jewel last week and my husband did the beer tasting. I just sat there by him but of course tried a sip of each one. :DThere didn't seem to be a problem at all. That would have been a lot of beer for me. Also, they let you choose one of the beers you tasted at the end to get a full mug/bottle.

The wine tasting we did each our own. There were only four types and I would say it equaled to two regular glasses of wine.

No problem sharing. Once you sign up with a server they provide you with each round of drinks. Feel free to distribute them to whomever you are with. We had a blast on the Pearl with a lovely cruisemate who ordered her boyfriend the Margarita tasting and he never showed. His loss.

  • 1 month later...

We were just on the Pearl. Did the beer and mojito tastings. My husband didn't want to do the mojito tasting but came with me. He tasted each of mine, no problems at all. I believe another couple were sharing as well.

The only thing they did say was at the beer tasting, they needed a minimum of 6 to do the tasting. The group ended up being about 10.

Must agree here. The NCL martini tasting is actually informative, entertaining and fun! The Celebrity tasting was very boring and not interactive at all.
