Hard alcohol

Hi CC'rs,

Sorry if this post has been posted a million times. I was wondering what the policy is with bringing hard alcohol onboard? I always bring wine but this time my friend who's a cruising virgin drinks the hard stuff. Can we get away with a couple bottles of gin and a couple bottles of wine? I know you all wont let me down!!

Thanks............. :D

Sure you can.. There haven't been than many people who have had their liquor held when boarding on the first day. The liquor that you hear people talk about being confiscated happens on the islands - St Thomas, St Martin, etc.

They can and may confiscate it at any port, including the embarkation port. Pack it well in your checked luggage and it will be in your room when your luggage is delivered. To say "sure you can" means "sure you can take a chance".

We did it on our Alaska Cruise last July and there was no problem. However, as was stated, pack it well in your checked baggage and don't forget the cocktail shaker!! :D Martinis on the verandah....nothing like it!!! :)

We just did a sailing on the Crown, and because we had a large group, but all of them were (except myself and my cabinmate) flying in from long distances, we bought a dozen bottles of wine and packed it in a box that we got from the liquor store. One bottle got broken in the transport process from the luggage drop-off to our cabin, but everything else made it fine.

Regarding other beverages, I did bring a few items in my luggage, but used my well-loved Rumrunner Flasks. They are totally worth it!

Even with all of the "extras", I still managed to spend quite a bit at the ship's bars, and discovered a new drink I'd never heard of before. It's called a Beverly Hills Iced Tea, which included Bombay Sapphire, tequilia, vodka, topped off with champagne, and served with a strawberry. Yum!

I'll bet they didn't even blink an eye or make you open the box to check if it was wine or liquor, did they?

They didn't have to it was leaking all over the place.

Actually, the cardboard of the box absorbed most of it as it turned out. We were surprised that only one bottle broke, but certainly grateful. I guess the vacation gods required a sacrifice. :p

I took more Tequilas back from the Tequila Factory to sail the ship. They were meant as gifts and NOT for consumption on-board. I was expecting and hoping for someone to confiscate them. I was too tired and hungry to walk all the way back to my cabin, which was aft balcony. NO ONE was interested, so I was FORCED to break the law and have the alcohol in my cabin. I am proud to say we never open any:p

Princess please work with me and take the booze not securely packed in my luggage. I don't need that kind of temptation in my life. My heart is willing to do the right thing, but the flesh/palate is sometimes weak. Thank you:D

I've never understand why princess makes a difference between wine/champange and hard liquor. So it's okay if the don't earn extra money if I drink wine in my room but not okay if I drink vodka in my room?!

We just got back from the Emerald and we took hard alcohol on board in our luggage. The only time we saw them taking alcohol from anyone was when the alcohol was in a box coming back from the ports. If you have it in a carry on bringing it back on the ship they do not say anything.

I'm sorry, but bringing your own alcohol on board, unless it's a special bottle of wine or champagne, is just plain cheap.

This is my humble opinion.

What's wrong with cheap? Is it a bad thing? Just asking of course.

I am sorry but in some cultures being cheap is a good thing, like being fat:p Being cheap with meat on the bones are great ASSETS in some cultures:D

Never taken it my self -- but heck with the rules. Take as much as you want until Princess starts xraying baggage and carry-ons like NCL does.

people who "smuggle" alcohol on board are the types that will complain that the cruise line is "nickle and diming" or "the quality has gone way down"

Whatever, smuggle your booze on the ship and have a good time. Cheap/Tacky whatever you want to call it, be proud.

As someone who does bring some of my own, I can honestly say that I've never complained about the quality (as long as I'm cruising on Princess, I don't have any complaints there), and I'm fully aware they "nickel and dime" you.....and I don't complain about that either.

I happen to freely patronize the bars, boutiques, casino, and spend quite a lot in all of those places, thanks. Personally, while bringing your own wine or other alcohol on board might validly be called "cheap", I would just as easily call it "convenient" and "practical". I certainly wouldn't call it tacky. People bring their own water and sodas on board, but I've yet to hear anyone call that tacky.

Just my own two cents' worth. :)

You are entitled to your opinion.

I don't think it is cheap IMO. After 7 days aboard , we still had a VERY large bar bill between DH and I -to the tune of over $100 per day. I enjoy a cocktail on the balcony prior to dinner. I think it would be ridiculous to order room service for one cocktail while we are getting ready. We definitely supported their bar - any time we were out of the room - which was most of the time, we drank from their bar. I am definitely not cheap, I just look for the convienence of having a nice pre-dinner drink while getting ready!

As for X-raying luggage - it is my understanding that they already X-ray your checked luggage - it is a security thing. I have heard stories of things getting confiscated such as dive knives that one had unwittingly placed in their check dive bag, etc. They will call you to the security office and pull these out and hold them for safekeeping untill you disembark. So, they do check.
