Do you need advice about Stockholm?

When you get off the ship, there is a little building. In there they have all the different options and prices on a big sign. I think we would have taken the train, except the ship's concierge lied to us and told us there wouldn't be cabs available to the train station and my mother didn't think she could do the 3/4 mile walk. There were cabs available to the train station AND all the way into Stockholm. I don't remember the prices, but the price we paid for 4 of us to take the ship's excursion bus into town was not much different than taking a private cab round trip.

We arrive in Stockholm at 7:00 AM and leave at 2:00 PM. What is recommended for early morning activities? What time do the restaurants and shops open in Gamla Stan? We planned to visit the Vasa Museum but it doesn't open until 10:00 AM. How much time should we plan for the museum?

As a resident in Clintonville, I wanted to say "HI!" to our next-door neighbor from UA. Which cruise line are you using? That schedule for a great city like Stockholm is really, really bad. Arriving at 7 am doesn't mean you get off of the ship at 7:01 am. And a 2 pm departure might mean you need to be back and ON THE SHIP at 1 pm or maybe 1:30 pm. Are you locked into to doing that specific cruise line? Have you considered other options? The Baltics are a "once in a lifetime experience" and you hate to short-change the adventure.

For the Baltics, Stockholm is a super star. So much to see and do there. With that schedule, you're going to have to compromise. It might mean walking around early in the am in the Gamia Stan before most of the shops are open. You can still enjoy the interesting architecture and great buildings before the shops open. The Vasa is super wonderful, plus seeing the changing of the guard. Much will also depend on the weather. Shop opening times will vary, but 10 am is a good average. When are doing this cruise? Doing a boat tour of the Stockholm harbor can be interesting, but many of these tours don't start until 10 am. Tell us more on your exact, personal interests and maybe we can make better, added suggestions.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

I would say ideally 2 hours but you have a very short day in Stockholm so maybe you could 'do' it in 90 minutes. They show a film of how Vasa was raised, which from memory is 25 minutes long, and run tours of the museum with a guide, which is another 25 minutes or so. If you see those and then have about half an hour on your own looking around you will have done it pretty well.

I made this from my visit there, which tells the story and shows the museum - don't look at it if you want your visit to be a surprise

Good luck, Tony

What is the best way to get from our cruise port (Frihamnen) to the airport? If the ship docks at 7:00 a.m. can I make a noon flight?

With luggage from a cruise, your best option is going to be a cab. That airport is at some distance north of the main town, but it's mostly a super highway going there. That airport is not massive and confusing like at Heathrow, Frankfurt or Paris' de Gaulle. That smaller size helps. It should work out fine if you're ready to get off of the ship when it docks. Stockholm cabs aren't cheap, but they are fairly efficient in getting you there. Most of the cabs take credit cards.

Hello Terry from Clintonville. We are on the Princess Emerald in late May and yes, we are committed to this cruise line due to non-refundable purchases related to the trip. When we booked the trip the day in Stockholm was from 10-5. Unfortunately, they flipped the itinerary and changed our time in port.

Hi UAcruiser,

We are on the Celebrity Eclipse arriving in Stockholm on 5/30/2011 from 8:00AM-5:00PM.

Although we have a few more hours in port than you; I'm wondering how we can both maximize our time in Stockholm, given the fact that neither the Vasa, Skansen nor the shops in Gamla Stan open until 10:00 AM. Hopefully, the experts can give us good advice. Carolyn

Thank you for the information. Royal Caribbean has a ship transfer to the airport available at the end of our cruise. I wonder if that would be just as simple? The price wasn't bad either ($36 per person). It will just be myself and my 77-year-old mother-in-law. We can handle our luggage (we both pack light). Our return flight has now been changed to 11:25a.m. Our ship docks at 7:00a.m. Anyone have thoughts on the better choice? Taxi or Ship transfer? Thanks in advance!

If that price is correct then I would go ahead and take the ship's transfer. A legit cab will be about $65.00 (could get 4 in a cab though). Let the ship remove the stress of you getting to the airport, just a bit more money.

This is a problem at almost every port we will be at on our June Baltic/fjord cruise. At virtually every port (except for Berlin and SPB) we arrive at between 6 & 8 but the museums and activities don't start until 10 or 11. I don't understand why the cruise lines don't arrive two hours later and leave two hours later .

Thanks! That was my thought too. I don't care as much about the money as the peace of mind. I went ahead and booked the $36 (per person) ship transfer. :D Worth every penny!

Maybe Al; can get you some better info, as I really don't want to reread all the pages of this thread, but if my memory holds, and that is a shaky thing, I thought I read somewhere that the Vasa Museum opens earlier in the summer months??. They say 10AM, but I thought it was about 9AM during certain months. How about that Al???

We also had a short day in Stockholm (not as short as yours) and we originally planned on popping into the Vasa Museum, take a few pix, see what's all the fuss was about, and move on to our next stop.We are really not museum people but those thoughts went out the window the second we entered the Museum. We got hooked. We decided to watch the movie ( A MUST SEE). That is about 1/2 hour, and then we didn't want to wait for a guided tour, so we explored on our own. But, as we were exploring, we sort of listened in on other tours, and got more and more involved in this just fabulous place. We ended up being there about 2 hours (gift shop included). yes, it put a crimp in our day, but let me tell you, this was one of the best experiences I had, and did a lot to make Stockholm our favorite port on the entire cruise. It is a facinating Museum and you must hear the story and see what all the fuss is about.

Here is a very short video as to waht to expect in the Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum opens at 8:30 AM June through August daily. UACruiser, will the Stockholm part of your late May cruise be in June?

Yes, we're there June 2nd. That information really helps us as we make plans, thanks so much!

For our Upper Arlington neighbor, the Vasa is really wonderful and very interesting. Here is the website for this great experience in Stockholm:

Here is the website for their local tourism office:

Below are some of my visual samples for what you'll see and enjoy at the Vasa Museum and nearby.

At the Vasa Museum with this large salvaged ship from the 1600’s. Taking almost two years (1626-1627) to build Vasa, carpenters, sawyers, smiths, ropelayers, sailmakers, painters, carvers, gun carriage makers and other specialists struggled to complete the navy’s great, new ship. The king, Gustav II Adolf, visited the shipyard to inspect the work. With a hull built of more than a thousand oak trees with 64 cannon, masts over 50 meters high and hundreds of painted and gilded sculptures, this was a spectacular ship. BUT, it was too heavy and sunk sailing out from the harbor.:

Across from the Vasa is the Nordic Museum in Stockholm. This 1907 building looks like a Renaissance castle.:

Connected to the main harbor in Stockholm, here is a view from the bridge to the Vasa Museum of the many different buildings along this grand Strandvagen boulevard. Completed in time for the 1897 Stockholm World’s Fair, it became known as one of the most prestigious addresses in town.:

The Vasa opening at 8:30 a.m. will be a big help to you. Since our cruise arrives in Stockholm on May 30th, we may not be as lucky. As our departure date gets closer, we may find that the Vasa will open earlier than 10:00 a.m. Carolyn

I assume that these hours will be good next summer in Sweden.

However, I have learned from my daily activity on the Athens forum of sister website tripadvisor these past two years (of course, we all know that Greece is a different story!) that things can change, so I highly recommend that you check on the websites Terry mentions before you leave for the cruise.:)

We are cruising to Stockholm we have 1 day there. Any advice for sight seeing, thanks

What do you most like to see and do? Tell us more! How much are you interested in history? Museums, food, art, music, shopping, architecture, etc.? How much of it in a leisurely style versus fast-paced? Then, with more detailed information from you, we can make better, more specific suggestions on what best fits your needs and interests.

Since are fairly new to these Cruise Critic boards, here are a couple of other suggestions to help you and other future travelers. FIRST, scroll back through all of the earlier postings. You will see many different items on ports you would visit and/or at the board for each separate cruise line in planning for your upcoming cruise. SECOND, do a search on these boards by each city and you will see lots of postings on various subjects connected with each port stop. Then, after taking the time to get that background, see other experiences, etc., you can post with specific questions in each port city. Be sure to have a title that is narrow to your question so that other can know what you are seeking. There are lots and lots of great people and information here on these boards. Don't be shy in asking follow-up questions. Folks are happy to share more when they know what you are seeking and background on your timing, cruise ship, travel party, personal interests and travel style, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
