lovetocruise16 Posted July 13, 2009 #1 Share Posted July 13, 2009 My husband and I have been on the Regatta recently and have enjoyed Penthouse 8032 very much. We have just booked a Sydney to Bangkok trip in 2010 but in Penthouse 8025. Is there any difference (other than a sofabed vs loveseat) between these cabins? Has anyone been on the Nautica lately in a penthouse suite? I had heard that the Nautica furnishings needed upgrading. Also, has anyone done this 21 day trip called Coral Seas and Asian Jewels? Would appreciate feedback on the ports, especially Bali and Semarang. Thanks.
meow! Posted July 13, 2009 #2 Share Posted July 13, 2009 We don't know about the PH minisuites, but we were in a basic balconied cabin on the Nautica last October. The ship was apparently well renovated recently and appeared quite new. There should be no need for a refurbishment for some years to come. Your information may be mistaken. DaveFr Posted July 13, 2009 #5 Share Posted July 13, 2009 The major difference between 8032 and 8025 is that 8025 has a connecting door between it and 8027. So there is the possibility of more noise than in non connecting cabins. Dave
coldinreno Posted July 14, 2009 #6 Share Posted July 14, 2009 Yes, we did this cruise in Feb. 2009 on Nautica. Semarang... We seldom take ship tours so in Semerang we hired the best taxi we could find. No drivers could speak English & the cars were total junk. We are seasoned travelers & have visited many dirty & destitute areas, this ranked with some of the worst. Most guests took the ship tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Burbadour (spelling?.) This is the worlds largest Buddhist Monument built from 778 to 856. A very long days tour with police escort to help navigate traffic. Everyone we talked to was very happy with the tour. Me thinks there is nothing else here worth seeing. Bali...This is a nice visit with lots of choices of interesting things to see. I suggest going to the Oceania web site to Shore Excursions, they spell out most of the sights. We found a very helpful non aggressive taxi driver at the back of the mob greeting passengers by the chain link fence as we left the ship. We paid around $20 per hour & stayed with him all day, I think we saw more than most of the ship tours combined. Cairns... Local tourist people at the ship will advise train departure times. Took a short taxi ride to the Kuranda Scenic Railway station. The vintage train slowly winds through the mountains to Kuranda. The track was completed in 1891 by Irish & Italian immigrants. Ticket included the Skyrail back down to Cairns, fantastic scenery over the mountain treetops. Nautica offered both these options but not together. Total cost was extremely reasonable compared to ship tours. I highly recommend this exact program if you do not mind adventuring out on your own. This was one of the most enjoyable days of the trip. Good Luck, this is a nice cruise.

lovetocruise16 Posted July 14, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted July 14, 2009 Thanks for the quick reply. How was the weather in February? I know it is the WET in northern Oz, but wonder how you fared with rain and heat. We know Australia well, but not in February. How did you enjoy Komodo? Was it a long trek to see the lizards? Having sailed in a P1, we at first assumed that all of the Penthouses were comparable, save for their location, because they appear of a similar size on the deck plan. This is not true. We have been lucky enough to have been invited to several of the Penthouses, and some of the P3's, in particular, are about 2/3rds the size of a P1. That's interesting because Oceania doesn't differentiate between the Penhouse categories in terms of size. Do you remember the numbers of the P3's you visited that were smaller? Thanks. Komodo was canceled due to damage at the tender docking area. Weather nice with little rain, very hot & humid in Bangkok, normal for Feb/March. The ship docked at Klong Toey, an industrial area close to Bangkok central. This is much better than 2 hours away where the larger ships dock. lovetocruise16 Posted July 18, 2009 Author #12 Share Posted July 18, 2009 Hi, coldinreno, Thanks for the replies. Can you tell me where the Nautica docks in Sydney? Had thought it was at The Rocks, so would book hotel nearby. Also, where does it dock in Cairns? Really appreciate you and all the other folks answering. Certainly helps with plans and reservations. There are no taxis waiting at Cairns but they are quickly available with a phone call. The local tourist people meet you dockside & will gladly phone for a cab. It is only about a 15 minute walk to the train station but we called for a taxi, didn't want to get lost & miss the train. As it turned out we had about a 30 minute wait. Don't miss this, awesome scenery.
