The pics don't give the sights you will see justice. Soak everything up and enjoy. Such beautiful craftsmanship and artistry everywhere you turn. Plus the fresh air and landscape of the alps and the Danube valley

Day 7 - Passau, Bavaria. I loved the tour here. The guides wear period costumes and talk in character. Also, members of the group are used to play historical figures. Very informative yet entertaining. In the photo with the flood lines you can see me standing and then look how much higher the flood went. The 2013 flood was 2nd highest.

After the morning in Passau, our ship sails upriver to the last stop Vilshofen. It's a cute little town. Evidently Ama Waterways has a special relationship with this town. We were going on to Munich post cruise. If you wanted some authentic German beer and food there were several cafes. It was very hot the day we arrived, so after a short stroll through the town, we walked along the Danube to the smalł beach. Yes, hubby took a dip. b6cdf875ec654bcf71b93a5c823542d4.jpg

  • 2 weeks later...

The cruise extension to either Munich or Prague stops in Regensberg along the way. Folks going to Munich get more time to spend there. We ran into lots of folks from the ship at the Sausage Kitchen. Yummy!

Regensberg was part of the Salt Road and a very important trading city. The guide gave an interesting tour based upon the Salt Road.

We loved Munich! I have to say if you don't enjoy beer, pretzels, and German food you might not appreciate Munich. After checking into our Ama hotel, LeMeridien, we had the afternoon free to do as we pleased. Our goal was to eat at the Augustiner Biergarten because we found out that Augustiner was the oldest and best brewery in Munich. d34753a56b2cd51a26cb3767426f2d48_thumb.jpg

It was drizzling so we couldn't sit out back outside under the trees.

The next day we met for a guided tour of Munich. The first part was on the bus and we went all over. The guide was very knowledgable and interesting. We really didn't take many pictures through the glass windows of the bus, but we did get to see the BMW factory, Olympic Park, the University Quarter, N a z i Headquarters, and learned interesting information concerning each. Then it was on to a walking tour of old town ending at the glockenspiel at noon to watch. We left the tour then to go out on our own. First stop, lunch at the Hoftbrauhaus. Find a seat and sit down. We found two seats right next to the band.

Chicken salad sandwiches at our house! ha ha

I just know I'm gonna starve to death on our cruise! I don't eat meat! No veal, pork, or beef schnitzel for me....

Can one live on Pretzels and wine with a little beer thrown in?

Thanks guys for the info on Durnstein!

Germany is the home of the Reformation -- sounds like time for a religious conversion for you (to meatatarianism :D)

If you take this cruise you will learn that a) Bavarians don't like to call themselves German and b) Bavaria is 90 % Catholic. (There's more to the story you'll need to take the cruise and find out) [emoji3] One of our guides made the remark that Bavarians are only German during the weeks of the World Cup.

After the guided tour, we walked to the Residenz Museum. All the feedback from CC posters was very favorable. Plus, I love seeing how royalty lived. There is a free audio guide that is included in the admission. It was very well presented. 361fcbd7c49e47b7b8351964714b709f_thumb.jpg16dd4ab0b891d5a3d9539484dcb6b949_thumb.jpg1fa67a409f6056a05564b5dfbc14398e_thumb.jpg2228356d55aa815d16fc083428031245_thumb.jpg66c5342be6f69561aa3f6df24fec4e5c_thumb.jpg6bcf1287d95ae7285da7ec62d6685fc5_thumb.jpg

Thanks for your pictures and for the small tidbit that roast chicken is served at biergartens. Looking forward to visiting Bavaria and not sure what I can eat as sausage is not high on my list but know we will hit plenty of biergartens. We plan to visit Munich, Salzburg and board an Avalon river cruise in Passau.

Do you like fried chicken cutlets or pork cutlets? That's always available also -- schnitzel

The Residenz is quite impressive. Is the treasury that you posted the pictures from the one that's right at the Residenz? We buzzed through there pretty quickly. Don't remember much of it.

Yes the treasury is at the Residenz. You can purchase your admission with the treasury or without. I recommend the treasury.

Neuschwanstein Castle exceeded my expectations. I knew ama would provide an excellent tour and they didn't disappoint. This was one of the reasons I went with the post extension tour and not diy. The guide Elsie was awesome. She spent her childhood in NJ so she spoke perfect English and understood Americans very well. After the tour she stayed at the hotel to help us print the boarding passes.
