Shuttle / tender drop offs in the Med

Looking for advice, finally planning next months cruise.

I hope previous Azamara guests (I am only interested in what Azamara does sorry) can help.

Where do the tenders drop you off in Monte Carlo and on the assumption shuttle buses are offered, where is the drop off in Marseilles (or are we lucky and dock further in than everyone else).

Thank you for any advice you can give us

In Monaco it was Port De Fontvielle on all 3 occasions I've tendered there with Azamara. Once we had a surprise change and were told the night before arrival we wouldn't be tendering, and we docked at Quai Rainier III instead.

Ann, when I was last in Marseilles on Journey we docked right there and could walk off into town. Welshfamily, there was a shuttle bus in Livorno arranged by Azamara, but there was a fee of €3or 4 per person. It took you to the centre. If you wanted to catch the train to say Florence or Pisa you then had to walk to the bus stop and take the number 1 to the station. Coming back from the station to the dock I took a taxi, shared with another couple from the ship and it was €20. Wish I'd done that going too. Much less hassle.

We are on the same cruise. Could We please ask for infomation re shuttles in Livornio.

Thank you

This past May while on the Quest (in Livorno) the ship docked close to town, no shuttle needed, just short walk.

If you are fortunate Azamara will berth adjacent to the coastguard station in which case it is a short walk into the centre of town.

If an Italian vessel is in that place it will be necessary to take a shuttle into town. This shuttle is normally run by the port and costs €5

When we were in Monte Carlo on Az we were docked. We just walked around the marina and got the lift up into town and Casino.

Thank you all for your replies.

Will we know when we board where we will dock in Livornio as it is our first stop?

Uktog I have found a port map, 63 and 64 nord (north) seem to be by the coastguard.

Phil,

Useful infomation particularly re Taxi's as there are 4 of us, also were taxi's plentiful as I thought the port authorise stopped them from coming onto the dock unless they were pre booked for a private tour. Sorry don't know where I have heard this from and it could be hogwash.

Was Marseille interesting as we have been looking at an excursion to Aux an province?

We do like to wander soaking up the local atmosphere.

We cannot decide between Aix, Cassis or just getting on the little train and puddling around the Old Town. May depend (sadly) how much work I need to catch up on that weekend - the price of sneaking in an extra cruise

Ann, if it was me then I would definitely go to Cassis or Sanary sur Mer. Both lovely quaint little towns and much nicer than Marseille Old Town. Aix en Provence has some great architecture and wide Boulevards with shops but it is a city and very busy.

Have you thought about Arles? I went there on an Azamara ship tour about three years ago and it was amazing. There is a wonderful Roman arena and of course, the Van Gogh connection and museum. Lovely Old Town for coffee, Kir Royale's and people watching.

Great ideas Lottie, there are currently no excursions other than a Town tour (which I would not take I can DIY) at present though that might change onboard. I will look online at possibilities for us getting there on our own. I am hoping for something offered by the ship as I have some of the dreaded land discoveries credit that has to be burned somehow.

But the primary challenge might be the workload that weekend :(

Welsh family, in my experience the Azamara ships have berthed at Port Hercule in Monte Carlo. It a short walk to the Nouvelle Quai Digues (sp?) from here, where there are taxi's waiting to take you to St Paul de Vence or Eze. They don't like doing the short journey into town. You could also do the 5 min walk to where the ferry bateau takes you across the bay. It takes you to a small berth near an elevator which will then take you up to the gardens near the Casino Square. The local buses will take you all along the marvellous lower corniche coat road from Nice to Menton for about €2 each.

Marseille is a place I could easily miss out on....and will be doing just that for a fake sea day on a future cruise!

On our Med cruise, Captain Carl deemed it unsafe to tender in Monaco as planned due to the swell, so he diverted to Villefranche and we tendered from there and were taken into Monte Carlo by coach. It was well organised and was a bonus really, because we saw a little of the French Riviera.

From Marseilles, we chose the Azamara tour to Aix-en-Provence and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks - Aix en Provence was what we had originally hoped to do but the pesky OBC meant book when we get there and now that trip is no longer on the website. I'm still hoping there will be an onboard option.

Personally I would prefer Villefranche only because I have done Monaco a lot of times but others will rightly worry about not getting that stop. The shuttle in would be good as I bet it has a really great drop off point.

We had also decided on the Aix an Provence and I booked 5 minutes ago by telephone ( 5.50pm )

I had read your post and therefore asked about availability. The lady said there is still seats available. She felt Azamara would book coaches depending on numbers, how true this is I couldn't say however hopefully you will be able to book on board. Sorry don't know why it isn't showing on line.

Hope this helps
