  1. Aaah, but "offensive" is a subjective notion. Without a recognized shirt police force it is absurd to just say as long as writing is not "offensive" it is OK on a shirt.
  2. No -- they do not "have" a substitute, the school district has to hire a substitute. Most jobs, certainly in the US, provide the luxury of paid sick days to staff - but they are called "sick" days -- not "get an early start on my cruise" days. You must have been an ideal employee.
  3. Of course -- but the question raised while iinitiating this thread was whether or not to RENT a scooter, not whether or not to use one.
  4. Yes he did - and the flics were catching up with him because they had his then-current name. If you recall, they descended on the place shortly after he checked out — which is why that was the last hotel he checked in at. His next stop was at her house, and then the apartment of the man he picked up at the Turkish bath in Paris. And, I agree: that film with Edward Fox made for prime watching. I never heard of a remake — which to my recollection rarely matches the original.
  5. Close to it. While teachers have many vacation periods (which others envy), the trade-off is that they are expected to show up on school days ——period.
  6. That would depend upon the type of tender and the weather conditions.
  7. As I recall, the Jackal did not even meet Madame Montpellier until after dinner - a number of hours after he would have checked in - and have had to have shown his passport.
  8. Good suggestion. The hassles of trying to join the cruise at a later port call (which might be cancelled) argue against planning to play catch up.
  9. I simply responded to OP’s question: whether or not to rent a scooter. Your experience might argue strongly in favor of renting a scooter; but a person who who “…can walk, just not long distances without frequent stops…”, and who also plans to get into a tender to go to Half Moon Cay, would appear to have options broader than yours. I merely voiced an opinion, as requested.
  10. Been there twice - once with the Navy, once on a cruise ---- both times along the quay, right in the middle of everything.
  11. If, as you noted, you are, in fact, still able to walk (albeit with limitations) you might want to recognize your abilities -- and walk. You will still most probably want to use elevators, either on foot or on a scooter, and you would not be able to bring a scooter to Half Moon Cay - or on a tender. To the extent you are able to function on foot, you might want to continue to do so as long as you can. This is the advice I give my wife - which she thus far accepts. There is little point in accepting immobility any sooner than necessary. Most doctors and physical therapists would agree that continuing to exercise (to the extent not a real hardship) is the better course.
  12. Agreed -- on a large ship it is best to simply plan a late breakfast when at a tender port.
  13. But once they receive your application your current one is as good as cancelled.
  14. Shop around - a couple of smaller vans might actually be more comfortable - and no more costly - than a very rare big one.
  15. Excellent point -- a bit of research can show that thinking outside the box can pay off: do not assume that a single occupancy cabin is a "must have". And being willing to pay just a few dollars more than the absolute minimum can give you a much better experience.
  16. That guarantee cabin may not morph into an assigned cabin until just a few days before sailing. Since it is possible for there to be a truly "last minute" availability (just a day or two before sailing) you might only learn when you check in. Happened to me in July 2002 as I boarded Maasdam in Fort Lauderdale.
  17. Yes Silver Line 1 stops at the airport terminals - take it to Silver Line Way, then change to Silver Line 2 to Black Falcon.
  18. Sorry - I was not aware that “Brits” was an offensive term. Of course, the collective folks who elect a government that passes laws are ultimately responsible for those laws— and surely you are not suggesting that NI is more responsible than the folks in England, Scotland and Wales.
  19. If you ever want to travel in Europe, the best way to come home (to Virginia, presumably) is by ship -likely meaning the QM2. You do not end your trip with a dreary flight, you gradually adjust to East Coast time, you avoid the annoying surcharge the Brits tack onto flights from the UK (which can be pretty high). So, even if you do a British Isles cruise, why not time it to come home on QM2? We have done that a number of times --- actually the best use of the only real ocean liner still in service.
  20. Grand Turk is in the Atlantic, and San Juan and Amber Cove are both on the north (Atlantic) coasts so none of your ports are actually “… in the Caribbean…”. They are far enough south to enjoy reliably warm weather in January, and the sea water temps are likely to be close to, if not over, 70.
  21. And in the early-2000s lots of people are (or, until recently, were) very pleased with their purchases of virtual currency.
  22. The ship they choose may or may not have “single cabins”- which are not necessarily less expensive than a double booked by one person. Generally no line really wants to dedicate a cabin to just one person when two will do more on-board spending. Are they willing to pick a ship depending upon your being able to get a cheap single cabin? You should check things out while they are doing their booking —- and grab something which strikes you as reasonable.
  23. We have stayed a couple of times at Hotel Nord Nuova on Via Giovanni Amendola, about two blocks from Termini Station, where the express from the airport drops you, and where you can get the train to Civita Vecchia the next morning; also where the two Metro lines intersect if you wanted to get around the city. Reasonable price, clean and comfortable, excellent breakfast, several good restaurants in immediate neighborhood.
