  1. When we lived in France our kids (young teen boys) started classifying the beach goers on a fruit scale: lemons to watermelons. Of course, we didn't find out until years later. We should have thought of the blindfolds.
  2. To get back to the OP and to Cannes - none of the beaches around the port are nudist, but all allow topless.
  3. In this heat hiking sandals work great. Keen, Teva and others make them.
  4. Yes and yes. Google "ferry Amalfi to Naples" to find the schedules. It is probably way too early to book it.
  5. It could be too much in one day, but you can try. There are always plenty of taxis around, so you can simply quit when you are ready and go back to the ship.
  6. Is this your Italy to Athens flight? If so, Aegean airlines has a direct flight from Naples to Athens in the morning. Same price as Rome to Athens. You might want to consider taking the ferry (or other transfer) to Naples and staying there the night before and then a hotel transfer or taxi to the airport in the morning. This is one time when you should pick a very nice, safe hotel by the port. It would save you the time and aggravation of getting through Rome. For example, look at these hotels: https://www.royalgroup.it/royalcontinental/en/hotel https://www.eurostarshotels.co.uk/eurostars-hotel-excelsior.html You could email them and ask if they can arrange for a transfer to the airport. If not in Naples, staying in Fiumicino should be good.
  7. They are free. At the end you give the guide a tip according to how much you liked it. We took that tour and enjoyed it. We gave the guide a very nice tip. I think a couple of young kids left without giving her anything, but everyone else gave her a tip.
  8. Yes. It is ok, but there is nothing to do there. The restaurant is ok hotel food. You are basically looking at the terminal or a parking lot and smelling car fumes. No place to go for a walk except up and down the terminal sidewalks along the taxi lines. You will be bored to tears. We have done it when we arrived in Athens in the evening and had an early morning flight to the islands the next morning. You are better off staying in Athens. You can take it easy and walk around some to get used to the time change, have dinner at a nice taverna. It will be a shorter trip to the dock the next day. At least it will be pleasant to look out of the window if you don't feel like doing anything else.
  9. We just booked tickets to Barbados in March. Flight Ease was less than half of what AA was charging.
  10. If you take a train out of Sorrento, you have to change trains in Naples. You will have plenty of shopping opportunities in Amalfi and Positano. There is nothing different in Sorrento - maybe more inlaid wood picture and cameo shops (some made in China), but that's it. The easiest is the Salerno connection. It will also have more frequent and shorter ferry connections. For your last night consider staying in the town of Fiumicino. It is on the sea, it has very good restaurants and it is a 10 minute taxi ride to the airport. For travel guides look up the Insight Guides and the DK Guides for each of the areas you are visiting. They will really give you an idea of the places you are visiting. Great pictures, great details and suggestions. They are both sold on Amazon and your library probably has some. You don't need the most recent editions. The towns and landscapes don't change and 90% of the restaurants will be the same. Since you have three nights in Amalfi consider taking the ferry to Capri one of those days. You can decide that on the spur of the moment.
  11. Let's say it is more of the movie cliché experience.
  12. Stay in Amalfi. It has good beaches and lots of restaurants. Ravello is gorgeous, don't miss it. Also, better transportation connections. All ferries stop in Amalfi. Some may skip Praiano.
  13. The Oia and Fira would be the best choice. Ask your cruise line or your TA if they offer a similar option for handicapped passengers or if special arrangements can be made for you to taxi to Athinios from Fira and get on a return tender there. I think 7 operations deserve some special consideration.
  14. Check Aegean Air. They run specials often and may be less than ITA. It could be a little early for them to list next year's flights.
  15. I like your new plan. I would suggest getting your tickets to Athens first, so you know at what time you have to be at the airport and which airport. There are two airlines: https://www.ita-airways.com/en_us/ (ITA is the old Alitalia) https://en.aegeanair.com/ Check out the prices and time tables from both Rome and Naples. If you fly out from Rome, you might want to go to the Amalfi Coast first and then to Rome. In that way, you have a straight forward transfer to the airport from your hotel. If you fly out from Naples, you should do the Amalfi Coast second. Also, if you do three nights (two full days) in the Amalfi Coast, you can see Pompeii on the afternoon you arrive on your way to your hotel. The first full day day you can go along the AC to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The second full day you can go to Capri. The last morning transfer to the Naples airport or to Rome depending on which order you are doing it.
  16. is there a similar Oia on your own excursion?
  17. The Domus Aurea tour is also underground and really cool - temps and sightseeing.
  18. I would say almost certainly. Years ago we were on a SB cruise that couldn't get into Venice because we were there over the feast of the Redentore when the Giudecca canal is closed. We docked in the industrial port (bummer) and shuttles were provided. Free of charge, of course.
  19. In the US, tennis shoes are generic for trainers. Most tourists would were running or hiking shoes.
  20. A half-day tour would work. You probably have a long port day. Go to Nice and Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the morning and spend the afternoon at the beach. The beach that Hank told you about is called the Plage du Midi. It is no more than a 10 minute walk from the tender dock. A great lunch or late snack at the beach is a "pan bagnat," the sandwich version of the salade niçoise. There are probably food trucks around selling it. They will also have "pissaladière." Both are typical of the area. In Santa Margherita you can take the ferry to Portofino and continue around the peninsula to San Fruttuoso and Camogli. Easily done on your own. The other alternative is Cinque Terre. Don't miss walking around santa Margherita itself.
  21. We have only rented at the airport because we generally fly in to Nice for a stay. There is a new Car Rental Center in a dedicated building next to the P5 Parking deck and across from Terminal 2. All major agencies are there. We use europcar. Maybe we have been lucky, but we haven't had major delays getting the car. There are free trams that take you from the Saint Agustin train station to Terminals 1 and 2. There is also a pedestrian walkway between the station and Terminal 1. There are free shuttles (navettes) that go around from the terminals to all parking decks every 15 minutes..
