I don't see anywhere where Carnival actually said "cold layup", just that they would be reducing crew to a minimum.  Vast difference, from someone who has done all kinds of lay-ups.  Putting a cruise ship in "cold lay-up" would not only take weeks to accomplish and millions of dollars, but simply removing 90% of the crew (the hotel staff) and keeping the deck and engine staff (who perform 98% of the maintenance anyway) and keeping the ships operating will accomplish the same thing and cost less.  Not only would engine rooms have to be dehumidified as the article states, but the entire ship, or you will get condensation in a hurry (talk to the folks on the Carnival Triumph), and with it mold issues in inaccessible places behind the cabin walls.  So, there needs to be power to run all the dehumidification equipment, etc.  I don't believe it is feasible to put a modern cruise ship into cold lay-up with any hope of every taking her out again for anything other than the scrap yard.

    per the link provided above

Cruise giant Carnival Corp., the parent company of nine of the world’s best-known cruise brands, said in a regulatory filing on Monday that some of its vessels could face a “prolonged” withdrawal from service consistent with what is known in the industry as a cold layup.

  2. i'm sure our end of November cruise is in jeopardy , unfortunately …

glass still half-full … but final is due on … 9/11 yikes - in another time, I would have been going ahead and sending in partial payments - really liked seeing that balance due go down … now that money is still sitting in our separate 'cruise account' drawing 2 cents interest  last month - woo-hoo

Its what I expect.  When cruising does start back up, I also expect it to be very limited itineraries at the start, mostly closed loop, no more than 7 days.

yep, I got blasted for stating that a couple of weeks ago now

    "cold layup" - not good

I will cruise again. Have a FCC to use. A Princess cruise planner just called. Waste of time and effort. Princess needs to put pet on their phones who know what their website says.

unfortunately, what we see on the Princess website may not be the same thing as Princess reps are seeing on their end … I've had to have the Princess rep actually log into the website to see what ( prices/promos ) I was seeing online

Princess Issued an Updated on Refunds regarding Processing Time -- March 20, 2020

Given the volume of refund requests and the care being dedicated to ensure each guest’s request is processed accurately and in a coordinated manner, please allow for approximately 60 days for refunds to be processed. All refunds will be processed in due course, but delays should be anticipated. Please allow sufficient time for us to manage this process.

looks like some will get the 'stimulus check' ( 4/17 estimated now ) before their 'refund check'

Related question, I have seen Pop Ups on CC website in last couple of days, saying Norton or McAfee antivirus has expired. I don't use either of these products and a search said these are SCAMS. Now this might not relate to this website, but it is the only site I have seen it.

    I just got a pop-up about updating when I opened the PE/FLL webcam … something's going on

I would prefer buffets be an option but not self-serve.

    and

    1) shakers removed from tables in the buffet area - servers to come by - or get your salt/pepper/ketsup put on by staff in the buffet line

    2) in the mdr - no bread , butter, salt, pepper on table - servers to disperse upon request

I know this is slightly off topic but I've been noticing that there is a LOT of cruise ship traffic coming and going from Port Everglades.  Today there are three ships, yesterday I think there were four other ships and the day before looked like five or six different ships.

Anybody know what is going on?  Are they disembarking crews or taking on supplies?  I don't think they're sailing with guests....😕

Noone disembarks - crew only on board - strictly fuel, provisions, dump garbage, and go back out

"maybe" if a crew member is "sick" they get disembarked - not even sure about that now

Looks like Island Princess gets it turn today in PE/FLL

  10. I tried to search … but is there a thread that summarizes which countries are currently closed to cruise ships or specific cruise ports

and when they 'might' re-open for business ??

Example - St Kitts until at least 4/7 'closes boarders'

We look forward to the time when St. Kitts & Nevis can again share special joy of our sun kissed splendor, cool tropical breezes and the genuine welcome of our people with you.

For now, however, to protect the health and safety of our citizens, residents and visitors, St Kitts has closed its borders to all commercial airline flights effective March 25 at 11:59 until April 7, 2020. Medevac or medical emergency flights will be allowed should the need arise. Unfortunately, Nationals and Residents overseas who were unable to return by the deadline will need to remain offshore until the border closing is lifted, with The Immigration, Customs, Coast Guard and the Royal St. Christopher & Nevis Police Force, enforcing all border controls.
