  1. I always check the receipt carefully because while service or health or commision charges are not a thing here, at least not yet, errors not uncommon. Getting charged for the wrong item or somthing not ordered or just a different price than on the menu.
  2. The approxamte total cost will likely be 25% to 30% more than the menu price.
  3. Yes, the tipping culture is starting to vary from state to state. I think because some states have raised the minimium wage and even eliminated the low cash tip rate while others maintain the old low rates. So if Washington has a minimium wage now of $16 instead of $7.25 it seems like it should change but tipping culture is ingrained from the low wage past. I hate those Square and Clover terminals. Back east only a few places had them. Here there are alot more places using them.I am now selecting no tip at no table service places. I don't care to be bullied anymore. I don't think you are a jerk. I was always taught that you don't add a tip if there is a service charge. Only have had those for large parties and places that had a lot of international tourists and they had them because those tourists acme from places without a tipping culture. This commision thing is one i never heard of before this thread but I have heard of health insurance service charge although I never have actually encountered those yet. There was a new article about a restaurant in Dallas. If I actually see service charges or commissions I will have to decide but in the abstract I think I would deduct from the tip line.
  4. Tipping culture in Canada is not like NZ where they don't tip. Canada is like the USA.
  5. The context was the receipt she posted from that restaurant with the 5% Cooks Commission added onto the bill. It does not seem like you read the previous posts in the thread.
  6. Care Facilitators….LOL. Sounds very left coast.
  7. I am still staying at some hotels that have concierges. If they provide me a service then they get a tip from me.
  8. Interesting. Never heard of that one. Back east where I used to live tips were pooled in many restaurants. Or the servers tipped out the cooks from their tips. Maybe they don’t allow tip pools in Seattle? That is at an airport which is sort of a captive location. Would they have a cook’s commission at a non airport location? Personally I would be at the Amex Centurion Lounge at Sea-Tac not a restaurant. That really sounds like a service charge. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have no tips and a service charge rather than tips and a cook’s commission? Some customers might decide to reduce their tip amount by the amount of the “cooks commission”.
  9. No you don't tip everyone who gets paid. Someone posted a link from TripAdvisor a few posts up that explains who to tip. Tipping etiquette is pretty much the same in Canada as the US. You are not required to hand your bag to a bellman. I rarely do. I don't believe you are that helpless that you can't work out how to use the calculator app on your phone. There are apps you can download where you type in number and press tip and percentages are offered. What kind of phone do you have? On my iPhone and Apple Watch I say Hey Siri., what is a 20 per cent tip on $______and it calculates the amount. If you have an Android phone I bet Google Assistant will do the same.
  10. Not necessarily luxury hotels. The Riverside Hotel in Fort Lauderdale has a bell station has a bell station and they offer to take bags. Last time I was at a Hyatt Regency they offered to take my bags up.
  11. I have stayed at a few in the last ten years. Resort hotels often take your bags to your room.
  12. Sounds like names from your contact list are added to the apps list. Message and social media apps usually ask to access my contacts. I always say no..
  13. Nice but OP says in post #1: “Any guidance gratefully received - and please, as I'm mathematically challenged, don't give me percentages!!”
  14. All they need is the calculator app on their smartphone. Much simpler than all that messing around.
  15. You are just throwing money away doing that in Bermuda. Almost all the tour operators in Bermuda except a few, not 100% but close to it, are allocating space using the Island Tour Centre booking engine. They are small and can't afford their own booking engine infrastructure and employees. Even if they have their own website they use the Island Tour Centre booking engine. The cruise lines and Viator are getting their tour space that they resell from the same source. Island Tour Centre s booking engine.......
  16. That is what I believe. Build it into the menu. And they should get medical coverage. Here restaurant workers get $7.25 minimium wage. Not even close to a living wage.
  17. Calling ahead s not going to happen. Health insurance is not mandatory here. Restaurant workers here only get the national minimium wage and are expected to make up the rest of their earnings from tips. I have heard that a few restaurants are adding a charge for a health and welfare fund or some such in the area but I would have no faith as to where the funds collected would go. I think those restaurants expect most people not to notice the add on. I also heard that if you complain about the add on the charges will probably be removed. Well, we will see how it goes.....I don't know if the public here will accept such add ons.
  18. Restlesss Natives, Sail and Snorkel for the Cure I have heard is good. . If it is availabele. http://www.rccbermuda.bm/Documents/Ferry/Summer Ferry Schedule 2023.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2qNFWthSKmEwCOjcilAPu9F945a4reZsJpMxs4Fu8CfGzc28uaOUsiUzc Restless Native and Rising Sun are pretty well known but there is also Capatain Kirks. https://kirksadventures.com/ourtours/#Inventory/6166 I have not seen any reviews of Captain Kirks Catamaran snorkel but Captain Kirk has been around a long time and I never heard anythng negative.
  19. That is the beauty of the Evening Chic dress code. No one will bat an eye at the small number of men who wear a tuxedo. The last cruise that I wore a tuxedo which was about ten years ago someone thought I was a server. That was too funny though.
  20. The caves are different. Fantasy cave is a run of the mill cave. Crystal cave features an interesting crystal clear pool of water. If you only do one I suggest Crystal. If you have ever been to any other caves then Fantasy cave may underwhelm you.
  21. I just press no tip for counter service and I am not embarrassed to do so. What I have not encountered yet but I have read about is some restaurants starting to add a 3% fee for health or health and welfare or something to that effect. I am not sure what I will do. Can I put I a strike through line though that and not pay it?
  22. Someone contacted Celebrity, their version of the app has the same issue on tablets and was told the opposite. That the app was only for smartphones. The problem is really the way Android works. It has to support a bunch of different manufacturers. So Royal/Celebrity has to test every update to their app on all major smartphones. They would have to do the same with every tablet. That is work.hours. They would have to have your device to test. On Apple devices there is one manufacturer and the way the OS works the app will work on both phones and tablets until the devices are obsoleted which is a longer time than for Android hardware.
  23. And since with smart switch you are transfering the app from your phone that was downloaded from Google Play that would be safe. Of course a future version of Android or the Royal app might not be campatible unless Royal decides to support the app on tablets. Are you never going to update you operating system or the app? Many Android updated address zero day vulnerabilities.
  24. The issue is that Royal Caribbean in their infinite wisdom has decided not to support their app on tablets. That is why the version in the Google Play store does not work on tablets.
