Oosterdam Aft Cabin

Am thinking about booking Oosterdam for transatlantic October 2018 Has anyone booked Aft cabin ***** deck 5? interested in hearing if there is noise or vibration and how dark room might be

We were in 5186 last fall for the TA and liked the cabin. The balcony is huge but there is a lot of noise on the balcony. I don't recall any more vibration than other cabins.

As far as the cabin being dark, it doesn't get any direct sunlight into the cabin. We were sailing during the super full moon last fall and it was pretty spectacular to see from our balcony.

The couch in the cabin was a love seat which was old and way to small for the space but it did have the new, huge tv at the foot of the bed. The room was larger than the normal veranda.

We enjoyed it.

We had a deck 5 aft on the Zuiderdam, the balcony is huge and covered and the cabin is a bit larger. We loved it and didn’t notice any major vibrations.

We were recently on the Oosterdam but on deck 7. Historically, we love aft cabins and they are our cabin of choice. However, after this most recent cruise we are going to book a different location. We did experience much more vibration and noise that was disruptive. Movement of the ship is something we enjoy but this was not a calming feeling. There was also some “banging” that my husband mentioned to guest services. Apparently it had something to do with the water in the pool. This was a transPacific cruise and there were a couple of days of rougher waters which may explain our experience. None of this interfered with our enjoyment.

Thinking about booking on the Oosterdam...an aft cabin. There are cabins available on deck 8, 7, and one left on 6. I have viewed pictures of the aft but it is hard to tell how much coverage is over the balcony. Would like some coverage so not in the sun all the time. Looking for recommendations for which deck to book....thank you.

Been in several deck 5 cabins on the Vista class ships and loved them! No significant noise issues. Motion was a bit more than the mid-ship cabins, but not bad IMO. Loved the larger, fully shaded balconies. Only negative was the long walks to most of the other parts of the ship.

We have had stern cabins on the Oosterdam and Westerdam, cabin 4174 on both ships, one was a TA. We particularly like deck 4 cabins because when you lean on your balcony railing, all you see is the beautiful prop-wash and wake. You are not looking down on any balconies below, you are at the extreme back of the ship. We have only noticed noise and vibration when the ship is maneuvering into and away from docks. Once the ship is underway, and the props are in sync, there is no unusual noise. When the seas are rough (10-12 ft swells or greater) there is a little bit of side-to-side motion as the ship climbs over the swells.

Deck 4 stern balconies have the most sun exposure. Decks above have less sun and more coverage of the balconies. The balconies are 8 ft deep and the cabins are about 4 ft longer.

We have never had a deck 8 stern balcony, but we have heard that there is more noise from the Lido deck above.

The only negative is the long walk if you are heading to the Main Stage, casino, or the Crow's Nest for a specialty coffee.

We just finished our transatlantic on Oosterdam. Had inside cabin 6015, overall it was good. Walls were marked from luggage being stored under bed. Other than that it was very nice , good storage. It is forward and there is more boat movement. A few days it was rough 45 knots of wind and 15-18 foot seas! It would throw you as you were walking. Also the noise on the boat (which is loud) sounds like bowling balls rolling and hitting a wall. We found out it is the boat flexing and it is loud. You could hear every floor forward going up and down forward steps. Bring ear plugs so you can sleep! In calmer seas the boat is very quiet.

Aside from the creaking in our Navigation deck aft cabin on Volendam (see the thread I posted on it), there is a side-to-side vibration/pulsating motion that I can only imagine is what I've found on the Internet as being called "propeller walk". It's not so bad, but it definitely feels weird.

We've never booked an aft cabin before, nor a cabin on an upper deck for that matter, but we won't be doing it again - we're going back to down low and mid-ship. I've already made sure my wife understands that decision will preclude us from ever booking a balcony cabin, but she is absolutely fine with it.

I sailed on the Oosterdam (Alaska) September 2017 in 5190 the deck is huge and completely covered, we heard no vibration, no noise issues, or had any soot issues. The room was not super dark, it has lighting so that isn't an issue. We sat on our deck to watch as we sailed by the glacier, saw lots of sea life during the week, it was amazing! The room was updated with the new interactive tv, bathroom, etc. The couch is smaller in 5190 than a regular NS.

We love aft cabins on the vista ships, and never had the banging westcoastcruiser describes on a Vista. We did have the banging on K'dam. We were on 7 and it was loud and disturbed our sleep. It isn't from the pool, it's from waves hitting the stern at just the right angle. I would go aft again on a Vista but not again on K'dam. Similar water conditions on Zuiderdam gave us no problems at the back, on K'dam it was terrible.

K'dam also had the "propeller walk" that bigwally describes (I call it shimmying). Never felt that aft on a Vista.

We like deck 7 aft on a Vista, and it is about half covered. Deck 5 did have a deeper balcony, but the full coverage seemed to trap noise from the water. I've heard comments about noise from above on Deck 8 aft, but the time we were on 8 we experienced no trouble with noise.

We noticed vibrations when coming into port and when increased speed was necessary to make port on time. Not bad, but it was very noticable.
