Kiwi Kruzer Posted February 14, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 14, 2018 3 car carrier ships have been turned away from NZ ports due to an infestation of stink bugs. The ships are from Japan and cannot be fumigated in local waters. One has headed for Brisbane but has been advised that it cant dock there either. If stink bugs got ashore they would devestate fruit and veg crops. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11994900 Wonder what would happen if a cruise ship got infected and was denied entry? Just heard that fourth ship has been turned away.
sewgood Posted February 14, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 14, 2018 It will be interesting to see how far the ships have to travel to be fumigated. We have watched these ships being unloaded at Auckland and it does take a lot of drivers and supervisors to get the cars off the ship and park them on the wharf. You even have at least one driver who drives all the drivers back to the ship to collect their next car. I hope they can get it sorted out quickly for the people who have jobs in the industry. Thanks for bringing the story to our attention David.
sewgood Posted February 14, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 14, 2018 I don't know if I would want to stay on a ship with stink bugs.
Brisbane41 Posted February 15, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 15, 2018 Those bugs are pests every summer and need to be sprayed regularly. It is difficult if you own orange and mandarin trees as these bugs destroy all the fruit on the tree. One has to be careful when spraying as we need the bees to pollinate the flowers in order for the fruit to grow. I have had one orange tree on my yard that normally guarantees a 3 month supply of fresh oranges of up to 6 oranges a day totally devastated by these bugs. NSWP Posted February 15, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 15, 2018 The NZ Car dealers won't be happy, all those sales lost. Customers who ordered the cars and paid for them won't be happy either. So apart from those workers at the wharves driving the cars off the carriers, you have many jobs in the car sales industry also impacted upon. Not all the cars on the ships would be fresh from the factory, many second cars are sent to NZ, Fiji and other Pacific Islands from Japan and sold. A lot go to South American countries as well. So the stink bugs could have gotten into other countries already, not all have the strict quarantine control Australia and New Zealand have. So where are these ships now? floating around the Pacific Ocean looking for somewhere to unload?

NSWP Posted February 15, 2018 #7 Share Posted February 15, 2018 Yes !!!!! I bet some dodgy 3rd world country accepts the ships and their cargo, albeit at a discount price. I am tipping they will end up in a South American or Central American country. Pity the poor crew on board, cruise to no where.
