Royal ships with an actual nightclub?

Not sure about minority. Even RCL are continuing that design with the Music Hall on their latest ships dual level.

They're just looking for ways to make more revenue out of it. Doesn't make it a bad or unpopular design.

I loved the Music Hall on Anthem and it definitely reminded me of the two-story dance clubs of the past... although it was bigger, more open, and more conducive to hosting other events.

However, IMHO, by far the best venue for a dance club on Anthem was 270... I really enjoyed the nights it was used as a club on my sailing. Not sure if they still use it like that anymore, as I haven't been on since November '15.

Yes, 270 is still used for the Red Party. It just doesn't attract the crowds given the location. Music Hall is the perfect venue for many of the reasons you listed, but also because the theatre crowd spills into it and most of the nighttime music related activities all take place there (live bands, karaoke, dance club). You don't lose the masses making people wonder all over the ship for different activities.

Pity they haven't used that venue for such on Quantum or Ovation. Would be interesting to try.

Hello all,

I'm looking into booking the Freedom of the Seas with a friend. We are in our mid-twenties and are still into the "club" scene (albeit a more toned down version). For those of you that have sailed post-renovation, what is the closest thing the ship has to offer? Did you find that a lot of young adults occupied the area? We are pretty much looking for a place to drink and dance and meet people. We are currently between this ship and a Carnival cruise and are weighing the pros/cons of each. Thank you!

They now hold the nightclub function up in Viking Crown.

Trying to find a list of ships on royal that has an actual nightclub on them. I know alot of them were removed. I know there is the Viking lounge but that's not a club. Anyone who knows would be greatly appreciated

Just Blaze on Oasis and Allure are fully dedicated enclosed true dance clubs remain....however, their dance floor space is quite small for such a large ship.

Harmony & Symphony have the partially dedicated ComedyClub which doubles as he the dance venue down in Entertainment Place.

Also on all Oasis class is Dazzles, which is an enclosed dedicated dance & live music club.

Music Hall on Quantum class ships is partially dedicated.

Boleros (is on almost all ships) & is dedicated dance area(not an enclosed club).

Mariner had lower floor of Dragons Lair removed in this current retrofit (the upper deck was removed before it originally left for China).

All dedicated dance clubs(Voyager & Freedom classes) were turned into specialty restaurant on top floor & interior staterooms on the bottom floor.

The Viking Crown Lounge-VCL (usually in part renamed where the dance floor is, eg. BlueMoon on Adventure of the Seas) serves as the defecto dance club on all other ships, except Sovereign & Empress classes.

On the Vison & Radiance classes, the VCL was originally built in part as the dance club and these ships have the best layout/vibe for a dance club that you can get in the VCL.

After the 2 floor dedicated dance clubs were removed from Voyager & Freedom classes is when part of the VCL became the defacto in this case 'pseudo' dance club. Even the DJ has a portable set up.

Both Empress & Sovereign classes utilize the dance floor in the aft lounge as the defect dance club...Spectrum on Majesty(only ship in this class left at Royal) & Boleros on Empress(only ship in this class).

It is rumored that Blaze on Oasis & Allure will mirror Harmony/Symphony when they go into next refurbishment.

The Oasis & Allure also had The Olive & Twist dance floor in the VCL. But this area was repurposed for Suite Guests/Pinnacle only (unless you take in the Chefs Table dinner, worth the view). As such, that dance floor is long gone too. It is too bad that unless you are a Suite guest on those two ships(as well as Harmony/Symphony), you cannot enter what used to be the VCL deck/area just to take in the best view on those ships.

Fun fact, the VCL was imagined by Edwin Stefan, founder of Royal. He attended the 1963 Seattle Worlds Fair and after experiencing the Spaced Needle, jotted a sketch that would eventually become the VCL(in all its variations).

It is unknown what the dance layout will be on the new ICON class under development.

At a time when the other main Royal competitors have upped their game with dedicated dance clubs, Royal has chosen to go in the other direction and replace the dedicated dance clubs with additional revenue generation(specialty restaurant & additional staterooms).

We’re not sure if the happier we are, the more we dance.... Or the more we dance, the happier we are... Either way, we’ll be dancing!

Take more chances, dance more dances!

Most cruise lines, including Carnival, are moving to multi-purpose venues. NCL will be taking a page from Harmony with the debut of the Bliss and turning the comedy club into a dance club after hours. Carnival uses its theatre space as a night club like the Liquid Lounge on the Carnival Sunshine.

The Sunshine is my favorite ship but that is the ONLY thing I am not happy about.

It makes NO sense to have a single purpose area of that size on a ship.

It gets used 6 hours per day? And the other 18 hours is wasted space.

You definitely don’t need a single use venue that ONLY serves as a nightclub. However, there are ways to do it that achieves something better than a space where it feels like a total afterthought. I haven’t yet been on a Voyager or Freedom Class ship since they removed the original dance clubs (maybe later this year for both), but I’m having a hard time picturing the VCLs on those ships sufficing for that purpose... I defer to those who have actually sailed with it though.

I don’t mean to just pick on RC. NCL made this mistake on the Escape, which uses the Skyline Lounge; nice casino bar, but a dreadful venue for a club. Looks like they corrected their error on Bliss. Ultimately, I think the Bliss/Harmony/Symphony approach will be the one that sticks with a dual use model where some thought was given to the space serving as a club. I look forward to trying out the concept on those ships in the years to come.

I've sailed Voyager class a few times since and don't consider them as having one.

It's now just a place where there's music, and lights, just like any other dance floor or lounge venue anywhere else. No atmosphere.

Fine if you're determined to go somewhere to dance, but not an enjoyable place to hang out as it was.

Sorry to hear that. That’s really an oversight, especially with Mariner being placed on these short 3/4 night cruises and intended to appeal to a younger crowd...
